Mariners in contract crisis

Mariners in contract crisis
By Ray Gatt

January 22, 2008 NEWLY crowned minor premier Central Coast is about to discover the price of success as more than half its squad is yet to be re-signed for next season.

In a situation the club would rather not have to deal with just six days before the first leg of its major semi-final against Newcastle Jets, The Australian can reveal 14 Mariners are still negotiating new contracts.

This is on top of doubts surrounding the future at the club of Socceroos striker John Aloisi.

A mid-season signing, Aloisi, not surprisingly, is the target of several big offers from overseas clubs in England, Spain, Scotland, Japan and the US after scoring seven goals in 12 games, sparking the Mariners' exciting charge to the finals.

The Mariners and Aloisi are in negotiations at the moment with the club keen to sign him as its marquee player for the next two seasons.

Aloisi and his family have fallen in love with the NSW Central Coast and he is keen to stay after spending more than a decade travelling to all parts of the world pursuing his career.

The club is desperate to retain the nucleus of the squad that helped take it to its first title in the A-League.

Despite the awkward situation regarding the amount of unsigned players, coach Lawrie McKinna remains unperturbed.

"Look, it's fine," McKinna said during Monday's official finals launch in Sydney.

"We are deep in to negotiations with the players and I don't think there is going to be any problems at all.

"It happens to a lot of clubs at this time of the season.

"Of course, you'd like it to be out of the way as quickly as possible so we can focus on what is ahead.

"But I am sure the players are not too worried, either. They are all still on a high after the weekend."

As for those who don't sign, McKinna said he wasn't too worried.

"If a player doesn't want to be here then we won't stop them from going," McKinna said.

"That's the business of football. You are better off having players who want to play for you."

We let go the following

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON THREE:

#11) Damien Brown - In fact he knows he's gone...
#26) Alvin Ceccoli - Gone to Adelaide

Resign to reduced terms or let go

#6) Andre Gumprecht
#9) Nik Mrdja
#13) Tony Vidmar
#15) Andrew Clark

Sign from other clubs

#5) Jamie Harnwell - would be good battering RAM -but also defence cover- but only 2 year contract, would be handy with Asia coming up
14) Adrian Caceres
#10) Nathan Burns

That would do with who is available - yes I'd love to say lets have JA and Juniniho but no chance so I will stop dreaming and thats why I say Burns is better

#7) Lucas Pantelis

Didn't he re-sign recently?

Would love Nathan Burns, but he will probably go overseas.

. oh no contract crisis! panic stations everyone!

. fancy having players unsigned for next season when this one hasn't even finished - unheard of!

. a winning team in a competition with a salary cap - can't imagine why they would want to stick together for another season or so

*edit*
. oh yeah and this discussion has been running in another thread for quite some time

Would love to see Simon, Gumps, Tommy, Clarky, Danny, Mile, JA and Ceccers to stay.  I've been really impressed with Ceccoli in the 2 games I've seen him play.  Covers a lot of ground and looks tough (but if he's going to Adelaide then I guess that's not going to happen).

Met McAndrew at the picnic and he seemed a nice kid.  We need to maintain a number of up and coming youngsters.

As for the rest well .... Viddie's got to be close to retirement and I reckon he might have to go so we can get someone in the back with some pace and give them a season with the team prior to Asia.  Porter, Brown and Osman either way not bothered.  Mrdja - can we afford to keep him on the books if he is so injury prone (at least Boogard has got on the park and gives 100% when he does).  Redmayne - don't know enough but is he going to be happy playing 3rd string?

You cant be indifferent about keeping Osman Costar, He was an awesome defender before he was injured and possibly wouldve been in socceroo consideration at this stage IMO. Clark has only a year or 2 at best left in him so its imperative that we keep Osman

My choices would be

Sasa Ognenovski. He brings not only Mongrel at the back which is sadly lacking but he also brings power in the opposition penalty area and his 50 meter diagonal passes to Kruse are outstanding.

Nick Ward would give the mobilty and youth to the midfield.

Jaymie Coyne can play across the back a well as in the midfield.

"Aloisi, not surprisingly, is the target of several big offers from overseas clubs in England, Spain, Scotland, Japan and the US after scoring seven goals in 12 games" - this wouldn't be Aloisi's manager beating the story up, would it? Not the same Aloisiwho couldn't find a club for six months despite "several big offers from overseas clubs in England, Spain, Scotland, Japan and the US blah blah..."

and bingo was his name

you will actually find that a good number of players have agreed to terms or resigned and all this info will be released at the end of the season

I would let go - Gumprecht - great energy but so yesterday
O'Grady - failed his late audition hopelessly
Vidmar - need pace at the back and room under the salary cap (I know he is the marquee but would be expensive to keep under cap if retained)
Trott - nice kid but there has to be better
Brown - the League has passed him by

But I will defer to Laurie Mckinna in all matters
