That line up was obvious we would be missing a target man. Kruse played the best balls in but he was supposed to be on the end of them.

Ange's stubbornness annoys me. Smith is not a good enough defender. Why play so open. Ok we want to win and get through automatically but play the qualifying game. Get the draw to get in front of Saudi Arabia and then you are home against the bottom team.
Now we are two goals down and Japan can clock off.
Not tactically smart

The minute Mooy was deemed unfit, Postecogolou should have immediately re-jigged by moving Milligan into one of the x2 DM positions and recruited Degenak to the RHS of the back 3 (quicker & far more capable than fckn Bailey Wright)

Would of been a completely different game then imo , as to me the midfield - a square block of 4 in front of the back 3, was a mess without an 'organisational player' such as Millsy.

Irvine worked hard in taking on that role of link between the back 1/3 to the front 1/3, (should of been - primarily) but it wasn't a role 'dedicated' to him per say, and therein lied the problem imo
.... too much rotation between the 4 of them ... dragging their shape all over the shop, none of them knowing where each was structurally.

The ■ block of 4 doesn't & didn't suit Rogic's abillity to
a) receive the ball, &
b) do anything with it, as Nippon were marking him tight and Tommy was getting it in wide areas as opposed to centrally where he is more devestating.

Kruse far too isolated up front, but he moved tirelessly, dropping to receive or getting too wide to cause damage. Ange should've risked Juric to start, he would've drawn defenders and opened up space for Leckie (if he was screamed at to do so ) & or Smith.

Overall it is Ange's 'stubbornness', as Al alluded to - that is a real Achilles heel to this team.

Brad Smith was a train wreck at LWB, all of which was Postecogolou's FAULT
... NOT Smith's, by selecting a player who's NOT playing regularly as per Ange's own fcuking criteria for selection.

Gersbach is apparently playing 1st team minutes at least, surely that gets you agead of someone just training/reserves

Likewise Luongo, didnt really defend well, didnt really distribute well and rarely came up with a creative move to set up an attack, not surprising to me - as he is just replicating his QPR form, which isn't receiving any plaudits ... so why would you select him on form ???

Musti Amini on the other hand IS getting good press out of Denmark. Would have much preferred him in there to Massimo.
- defensively more of a terrier but still has the eye for attack. Luongo looked aloof at times.

Japan weren't overly brilliant in their play, capitalising on errors that were easily avoidable.

If Ange had a time machine, a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-2 (in any shape) would've got him WC Qualification tonite.

Oh ... and if guys like Spiranovic (Chinese 2nd Division) and Sainsbury (17 minutes of club game time since Oct 2016) are both eligible to start, why the fcuk is Alex Wilkinson not even considered for the squad at least :headbutt:.

Wilko could of easily got the job done at RCB alongside both Sanga & Spira, which would've allowed Milligan to take over for Mooy in Defensive Midfield role.

And dont give me age bullshit, Cahill's still there.

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou has taken responsibility for team selection and his side's performance in Thursday's 2-0 defeat to Japan in 2018 World Cup qualifying in Saitama.

Postecoglou's team selections came under fire on social media, with Robbie Kruse's deployment up front coming as a surprise.

Bournemouth's Brad Smith was started on the left side despite limited game-time at club level, drawing criticism.

The Australia boss, who lost Aaron Mooy to illness pre-game, acknowledged his side were never in control against the Blue Samurai and took the blame for the loss.

"The team we put out there was certainly good enough to get the job done," Postecoglou toldFox Sports.

"I'll take responsiblity for team selection and the way we played.

"Tonight's result is on me, not the players or the ones who are missing.

"We didnt have the night we wanted to."

Postecoglou appears despondent post-game and paused momentarily with a shrug when asked if he was still confident Australia would qualify for Russia automatically.

"...At the moment I'm just disappointed about tonight, the rest of it is secondary," he said.

Australia sits third in the group, level on points with Saudi Arabia, but two goals behind on goal difference.

The Socceroos host Thailand in Melbourne in the final game, while Saudi Arabia are at home to the already qualified Japan, with a later kick-off time allowing them the knowledge of the equation to clinch second spot.

"We've got to play well first," Postecoglou said.

"Being at home will make a difference. We've got to win.

"Unfortunately we've got to rely on another result.

"We'll see what happens. We'll do our job and see what happens."

Speaking about the performance against Japan, he added: "It's a bit hard to sum it up right now because obviously we're disappointed with the outcome.

"We had our moments but we just never really got control of the game, particularly our midfield.

"We had some possession but we didn't really threaten as much as we could have.

"The first goal really killed us. Obviously disappointed."

Ange and Cheika are like for like now. Aussie team plays one good game in 5 and justifys their coaching. Utter garbage.
Zero flexibility and zero responsibility. If there was they'd change what they are doing when proven wrong so regularly.
