We'll have Stens back for our next match against Perth which should stabilise us through the 90mins somewhat better.

When we were stable this game we had their measure, defended calmly and were dangerous in return. We missed scoring by a hairs width several times and we could easily have had 4 or 5 if they were slightly better shots.

Perth's second half assault put us on notice and we weren't at our best at all but was mainly a lot of balls into the area...not so many shots on goal. Attached stats are telling.

Also their only goal was offside (imo it did interfere enough).

Next time they'll start all their weapons. If Stens is on and we hold them out with our disciplined banks of four I think we'll win it again.

Get in lads!

Both goals were fantastic. Fantastic assists and goals.

DDS stood out. Matty and Ollie too.
Not sure they will be able to start all their ageing players. It's only a few days after they play the fire chickens. And I'm hoping they get absolutely hacked. Glad Castro didn't get his deserved second yellow tonight because he'll play minutes against Wellington.

Damn i love you PL. Let me buy you a feed and a free massage. You are the biggest enigma i have met. we need to flap gumbs
Not sure about the enigma bit Wombat _ I was right about Staj. What I said at the time was that he was clueless and naive and his signings were underwhelming - in particular Silvera, Majok and Roberts. At that stage he was listening to the wrong people and was still getting used to the A League, his tactics weren't working and he could not manage his subs at all (remember Adelaide and the FFA Cup?). In 12 months he has turned that around 2000% and I have given him credit where due.
And just a reminder as to what my thoughts were when everyone was carrying on about these "great young players" he was bringing to the club at the start of the 19-20 season - this post from mid October:

Who do you think we should sign Pinklady?
I just don't see the reasoning behind signing Roberts - I don't think he will develop more as a player here than he was able to at Melbourne City or WSW. He could have been worthy of a NYL deal, but like Marc Moric, he would never accept that.
As a scholarship player, a goal scoring striker (albeit at NPL2) and an example of young talent that we want or need around the club in terms of development we would do much better with this

John Roberts WSW NPL2 2018 - 12 games 3 goals, Mount Druitt NPL1 (1sts and 20s) 17 games 5 goals - thats 29 games and 8 goals in 2 years.
Alou Kuol GVS (Vic NPL2) 26 games 22 goals

And unlike a lot on this forum, I think that Staj has done well with managing Alou. When he has started he has been lazy and complacent - when coming off the bench he brings an enthusiasm and work rate that has brought results.
Also on Monty. He turned the NYL/NPL around after the disaster that was Ray Junna and Steve O'Connor. He did the double in both 20s and 1sts in a shortened season when some clubs didn't even compete and many played with reduced squads and players took time out. But he won it convincingly in the end and with the team scoring 46 goals in 12 games. From last year's 1st grade squad he has lost possibly 11 players. If he can make the semis with the squad that he has - and thus get promoted to NPL1 then I will be the first to congratulate him. From what I have seen in the pre-season they will need to turn things around very quickly - I really hope that he can.

Finally on tonight's game - Staj and Simmo were both right - we just weren't good enough in the second half. Luckily Perth were shell shocked from the first half and we scrambled, kicked and scratched our way to a win. Still 3 points - there's no bonus points for playing pretty.

Looking forward to Stens coming back. Ollie had to do too much dirty work. Bouman has done enough to be a regular starter whether on the wing or up front.
I have always said that Nizz is a DM rather than a winger. Last night he was not a stand out and has looked better in earlier games in a more attacking position whether wing or midfield but playing more forward.
Janota is a pro and must feature in more minutes in the future.
Interesting problems of the best sort in midfield.
Again last night lots of missed chances.
This team has a lot of potential goals in it.
There will be a game soon when we absolutely destroy another team.
I would like a game where I can relax and enjoy the last 20 minutes.

I was hoping Staj was going to throw on Hall or Balard for Matty and play 3 CM’s for that last 10 or so. We looked out on our feet but in a way kinda defensively comfortable. Although I was definitely shitting myself ?

Very excited and stoked to win that. Poor sub decisions need to be reviewed, Simon was running on empty, otherwise great.
I thought so too but post match Staj said it boiled down to when do you take the risk of going down to 10 if there is an injury and you’re out of sub windows.

On Kuol I don’t think he got the same quality of balls to run on to as we had in other games or the first half. Part due to us being cooked but also not having Bouman as a fresh strike partner.

The John Roberts signing was a bizarre one.

Why sign a player on the verge of retirement?

Wow what an interesting game.

The travel seemed to kick in during the second half.
Suddenly the solid banks of 4 had more holes than a golf course.
no way we even draw that game in the last few years
After being screwed last week this was a massive win. Could so easily have crumbled.
yet we still should have scored at least 1 but probably 2 more goals. We had some really good shots and DDS should have finished them off.
Nizzy had his worst game in a long time and Rowles was :poo:
Great win when you don’t play your best but beat one of the better teams away from home

I was screaming for subs to but staj loves a sub in extra time to waste time when we are winning. Very risky with the holes in our defense were as big.
big balls or stupid doesn’t matter it payed off hut he’d be getting killed for it if we draw or loose

I feel Garcia underestimated us and didn’t look at the ladder, I felt comfortable when I saw their run on team and way too many changes and too much fire power on the bench. Not sure this was the game to rest so many good players and we taught them a lesson in the first half. There has been plenty of Urena doubters so they can keep quiet for a while now. DDS was on fire and I wish he finished one of those shots but he is still getting better every game. I’ll admit I almost didn’t sign up when I knew Simon was having another year, how good is it seeing him score without penalties and he is even having 3 or 4 good shots every game. Unbelievable and I’ll eat my hat, I’m even happy seeing him start every game.

I feel the conditions seen us run out of gas in the second half and maybe this is Staj’s game plan for the end of the season in making us grind out wins when we are gassed. Janota had a fine 5 mins and we probably needed 20 out if him but I’m thinking this is all part of the plan. They hurled heaps at us and really didn’t look that good as they were panicking. Everyone focused on Glory’s goals so far but their defence is questionable and we rightly pressed it and got the result.

Bouman continues to impress.Smart in attack and defended well.Arnie will look favourably on his strengths and Tokyo is beckoning.

The return bout with Glory should be great.I am sure Castro will start or be on much earlier and the Japanese winger,Ota,will start ( Nigro will have his hands full with this bloke).

In the last 20 you could see the players were gassed and needed subs - but with only one sub left up the sleeve and the risk of injury high (Ruon looked like he might have an injury at one point and Simon was walking wounded) it would have been a massive risk to not keep that sub option ready

The more I see, the more it is clear the work Staj has done with the players and their mental state in games. Last year we would have buckled in that last 20/25 mins and been handed a beating but they scrap, claw and bleed for each other now. My major concern is Staj and how long it will be before Victory come courting!?!
