Pre-Season Games

I wonder if the objective was possession, possession, possession hence the back passing when they appeared to have them on the ropes on numerous occasions. It was just a pre season and IMO PO was looking for everyone to try the new style to death and attack took the back seat for the day. The Nix goal was sloppy and to keep what is going to be a potent attack this season at bay was a pretty good effort and would not have happened last year. Overall I'm pretty happen with the direction and performance and well done Okon.

The last 30 mins worried me a lot in defence as Micky, McGing and Ascroft all used Ivan to help them out, Phoenix were pressing and Ivan was having a lot of trouble with the back passes on a decidedly bumpy pitch.

It wasn't the last 30mins it was the whole game! Get use to it all, this is Okon 101 - only go forward if there is no pressure on the second pass otherwise change the point of attack or go bacwards. You think Moss was conservative, you ain't seen nothing yet. Okon will happily hold possession amongst the backs all game. It's about patience. I hate it, and over the years he has shown there is No plan B

My concern was not the back passing as such, but the lack of composure and decision making in defence when the younger guys came on and Posc, Faty, Monty and Tavares had all come off.

Hmmmmmmmmm....i hope you are wrong Coach.
Mossy wasnt just conservative, he was f**king clueless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Probably the worst coach in HAL history, including Blieberg.
I need to see some structure in our play after the last few years.
In Paul i trust.

Here's my take.

Field looked good but was rubish. Was like playing putt putt on stones. The ball bobbled everywhere all day and can be used as an excuse but not all things can be blamed on the pitch.

First half
Started valuing possession and swinging the ball from side to side at the back but there was no link to the next line. Taveras sat just in front of Faty and Posco when we had the ball while Monty was pushing higher but Taveras seemed to get by passed instead of using him as the outlet. They went via the left and right backs instead of Taveras. They turned the ball over to frequently and we looked the Swiss cheese defence we were last year. The nix were effective on the break and we looked ready to crack but somehow didn't. Nix were using Finkler with Watson and Krishsna. Mcglinchy and Barborouses were in the 2nd team (after 60mins). Krishna had a wide open header in the first half in the box with neither CB in koowee of him. He hit it just over the bar. The nix sat way back and did not press but blocked our avenue to the attackers.
Trent lacks physicality and was pushed off the ball or hesitated if had space. The pitch didn't help him but is still to raw. Apiah is ahead of him IMO.
Pain had good tenasity and uses his body well but we didn't go down his side very much, he was also marked tighter than Trent. Roy got no service and Powell similar. We created very little chances and never looked like doing so.
I saw no signs that PO was the coach except that there has been a few articles saying so. We were so similar to TW it was hard to notice any differences. Possession was one but that was based on the nix blocking the middle and saying mess around with it at the back if you want. We accepted that better than under TW but we didn't use the wings as effectively.
Monty was his usual self, winning a lot of ball in the middle.
Roux was very worried about his leg. Pulled it away from challenges. Will need quite awhile to get mentally right to trust it. Not the player he was, needs time and Adelson getting hurt leaves us short.
The nix weren't that threating either but they did look like they would punish us on the turnovers. They had prob 3-4 half chances and had the better attacking chances.
Neither Keeper was tested. Izzo just plain dropped a long corner that sat in the wind and floated over him and he stretched for it and just dropped it into Watson. It was nothing but a classic 2015/16 CCM give away.

2nd half. Swapped Izzo, McDonald, Faty And Posco at half time for Ivan, Neill, McGing and Ashcroft.
Straight away McGing turned it over 2 or 3 times in the middle and should have been punished. In the 15mins before the rest came on the new boys continuely lost possession.
Also Neill needs a compass. A couple of times he took the ball in the attacking 3rd with poor body position and we went all the way back to the keeper. The crowd got very frustrated. It won't go down well at BT with 3-4 times more fans.
At 60mins the rest came on.
The intensity increased immediately and the game opened up. Fab was pretty much ignored and only had one good run which he got brought down just outside the 18yrd box but put the free kick into the wall.
Adelson put in a peach of a cross from a run down the right wing and it went right across the goal mouth past the keeper and just needed a tap in but nix scrambled well and Bingham over ran it with it going behind him.
Appiah looked good but no decent service. Bingham looked sharp as well but was restricted to shooting from 5m outside the box. Peterson played well in midfield and got a lot of ball but some of his passes were not on the money but they were attacking attempts that at least had potential if pulled off correctly. The sort of vision if he can make it work you want to back. He out shone Berry IMO. No way is he a RB. Adelson looked so sharp and skinned a few players and had Roux covered for sure IMO. He was screaming down the right touch line and just stopped and hit the ground (no tackle) and PO and assistant jumped straight up as happened right in front of them. They called for stretcher straight away. Might bet is ACL again for sure. There was 3 mins left when happened and they just called it off at 90m didn't bother with extra time to catch up his injury. It was a sad finish to a pretty poor display.

Overall we were ordinary and showed nothing that says it's being turned around. We just don't have the right players.
That said we will have a good bench this year with Bingham, Apiah or Fab, Rose or Monty.
Better pitch might have helped.
We really need a player who can take free kicks, crosses etc.

EDIT* Just wanted to mention I wrote this before your report Big Al. That makes it sound like despite the score we were still poor at the back.

Okon would not have been focused on 'winning' that game. He would have been focused on a few key elements. From what the guys have said - that sounds like it was defence, possession and getting minutes into all the squads legs. Bit silly to judge him on that in regards to being too conservative. And based on what Rowdy said about Powell coming too deep to receive the ball (you see that happen so often when the CB's or CDM's are failing to distribute or switch the play quickly - or also inexperienced 10's ) and that nearly always kills an attack. Isolates the forwards and too often means you have to hit 30 yard balls to an insolated striker with there back to goal and CB's up their ass, or at wingers forced to run back towards you with no space to turn and run into or chase down lost cause long balls... where ideally you want them ghosting around and sitting in the pocket so as to be available to play combinations and or run at defenders, draw a man and slot something through or over, or otherwise put something out wide and in behind. Anyway...

I understand your concern coach, having watched some of Okon's youth matches I had the same initial fears. But he's a developing coach. So I'm not going to hold him to his past as being all that he is capable of. And from everything he has said, I don't think his intention is to play boring and conservative. He seems very ambitious and determined. Moss never even communicated his intention that I can remember and I'm definitely expecting better football under Okon.

How did they set up in defence? Did they press?

I'm sure the combinations in attack will come - but first things first - we do need to be able to keep the ball for more than a few seconds under pressure and as the worst defensive team in the comp last year - surely focusing on defence, and neutralising the bulk of attack of one of the best attacking lineups in the HAL sounds like a pretty solid step forward.

I'm not concerned by how we played today. The style of play is massively different from the chaos we played last year. It will take time to develop a possession based game into an effective attacking weapon.

Just remember Adelaide barely won a game for 10 rounds last year and then won the double. So it will take time. If we can stick to this plan and develop it as a team then I can be patient. I'm more happy with what I saw from us than the borefest Wellington are putting out. They never once tried to play out from the back. Keepers always hit a long ball to a compressed huddle of players in the middle of the park even with minimal pressure from us. Contrast that to us. We played out from the back every time the keepers got the ball and showed some good composure keeping the ball under pressure.

We are building something and I think I like it.

We didn't press, because we turned the ball over in the middle to often.

Izzo was shouting all his game time to direct them (my wife said shut up Izzo and do your job, I said that is his job, she said no it's to stop the goals going in and he should try that first. Had a laugh). Faty looked a little heavy and there was a sizeable gap between he and Posco.

It wasn't the type of game where the nix controlled the ball. They almost just gave it to us so couldn't press.

There was a huge hole on the far side. The nix Left back could and did hit diagonal balls to the right wing into acres of space and they created a couple of attacks from it.

The defence wasn't horrible when setup but they do look like they need to go to the pub together and introduce themselves to each other. Faty looks slow and Posco can be to aggressive and pull him self out of position.
It's the covering each other that still needs work.
We could get scalped by pace as well.

Bit hard to go into much detail as they only played a half then swapped and then swapped teams again at 60m to the reserves.

Basically turning the ball over creates massive holes and scramble. Fix that and then they have more time to set up.

Didn't feel like much has improved.

A Sainsbury would be really handy the way we want to play

For those who already received there yellow and blue one eyed glasses for the season. From Mariners website. Keep scrolling past blank sections, pictures haven't copied

Wellington Phoenix striker Hamish Watson saw the ‘Nix take home a 1-0 win at Knox Grammar on Saturday afternoon in front of 1500 vocal supporters.
Central Coast Mariners 0 Wellington Phoenix 1 (Watson 38’)

The Run Down

Despite it being a pre-season friendly, Central Coast Mariners and Wellington Phoenix both started with strong sides in what was a crucial hit out for both Hyundai A-League outfits.

There were wholesale changes to both teams in the second half which gave Paul Okon a chance to see his whole squad in action during his first challenge against a Hyundai A-League opposition.

It was Wellington who had the ideal start away from home when they took the lead in the 38th minute as a result of some scrappy play in the Mariners’ box and Watson was there to capitalise from close range. (Izzo stuff up)

Throughout the first half there were plenty of promising moments for the Mariners, especially the attacking combinations between the likes of Connor Pain, Trent Buhagiar, Blake Powell and Roy O’Donovan.

After changing almost the entire squad in the second half, the Mariners pushed hard in the closing stages for an equaliser and came close on several occasions.

Second half substitutions in Fabio Ferreira, Kwabena Appiah and Josh Bingham were asking serious questions up front but Italiano made several crucial saves to keep the Phoenix ahead.

The Mariners put in a dominant display in the second half but unfortunately couldn’t find the equaliser and Wellington Phoenix finished with the bragging rights.

Unfortunately for Jake Adelson, who recently marked his return from a long-term ACL injury, the lightning fast right back was stretchered from the field grasping his knee. The Central Coast Mariners will provide an update when available.

Next weekend the Mariners will head to New Zealand to face Wellington Phoenix on their own turf for the next edition of pre-season.

The Central Coast Mariners would like to say a massive thank you to Knox Grammar for hosting us today along with the 1500 supporters in attendance.

For GOAL

38’ WATSON GOAL: Wellington took the lead from a Gui Finkler corner. After the Mariners failed to clear danger, the scraps fell to Watson who poked home from inside the area.

Paolo in the press

“Today was a step in the right direction, we probably didn’t deserve to lose the game but that’s not our real focus at the moment, we handled the surface quite well and move ahead to playing the Phoenix next week in New Zealand,” Okon said.

“Jake Adelson was stretchered off, it’s too early to say until he has a scan but he’s just come back from 9 months off and it was great to see him playing with a smile on his face, hopefully it’s not something that will keep him out for the same amount of time.

“The attitude since I’ve arrived has been fine, our hunger in the second half was pleasing, obviously we need to improve but no A-League side would be playing at their best just yet.

“I’m looking forward to Monday – I can’t wait to get back onto the training pitch and see where we can improve.

“We’ve been working on our combinations – the pitch was a bit bumpy so that last pass was difficult to find but that’s an area we need to improve if we want to score goals.

“Montgomery and Tavares have been really receptive and we are happy with how they are playing together, with every game and training session they are becoming more comfortable playing with each other.

“We want competition in the squad, that’s going to mean that everyone’s pushing each other to make the first 11,” Okon said.

Agree with aspects of what everybody is saying.
Pitch was a bit smaller and very bobbly, the midfield was packed and both teams turned it over.
Posco and Faty were solid as were Tav and Monty.
The only attacking combination I saw was Trent getting in behind twice in the first 15 minutes.
Pain was really frustrated at the lack of service and as usual Roy got nothing despite working hard.
I think Powell is a decent player but I am not sold on him as a #10.
Possession was the priority and it got recycled from pretty advanced positions all the way back on numerous occasions - I dont think this will translate well into attacking or "entertaining" football unless we can get somebody to dictate the midfield in the final third.
In the second half the change in defence was noticeable straight away, 2 mistakes from McGing and 1 from Ascroft in the first 5 minutes, Ivan's distribution was awful. I thought Fletcher looked good but agree with Rowdy, the stand out was Adelson, he made 3 or 4 great runs from right back but from the way he fell and how distraught he was I fear it is another ACL.

I may have missed this (if so, happy to apologise). Where was Rosebud? I know he is often with the Aussie age team, but generally Trent is with him. In this case Trent played, Liam Rose wasn't named. Any cause for concern, or am I being unnecessarily alarmist?

Fishdad he is overseas with the Australian side and he has been the captain and stand out player IMO and his form will mean it will be hard to leave him out of the starting 11 IMO.

The next game is against Thailand and starts at 7:00 PM tonight... if you have Optus it actually decent coverage of this tournament. You may be able to get it on a stream..

As I said his form has been excellent and he is playing the deep lying DM... and at times moving forward with the ball... looks a lot like Mooy in this side but playing deeper.

Cheers Midfielder, I've gone from being worried to proud and excited - amazing what a bit of news like that does!

Now I'm wishing Trent was out for the same reason...I'm looking forward to him coming on in leaps and bounds this year, and challenging for a starting position in the post-Xmas games.

I pretty much agree with most of what has been said here. Some thoughts;

1. We now at least have a plan.
2. We will maintain possession as a priority. We will go backwards a lot and side ways to maintain possession under least pressure
3. We seemed to immediately get compressed in defence from turnovers, I liked it as it seemed disciplined and automatic
4. It won't be pretty and we won't score as many but I suspect we won't concede as many either
5. I suspect we will hear a lot of booing when we regularly go backwards, the more educated will have to be patient with the ignorant
4. I am thinking some players will struggle initially with the disciplined approach having played such an undisciplined structure during the recent seasons, splinters will fix that
5. Goal Keeping worries me
6. No Barbarousis was a blessing yesterday
7. I felt totally shattered for Adelson, I have heard great things and saw enough to suggest he is the real deal, I wish him a quick recovery
8. We need some coverage both right and left defence, no Adelson and MacDonald is fringe, Storm and Neill must stay fit!
9. I will openly say that I'm not a fan of Okon football because I think he lacks the understanding when plan B and C are needed but, I will be very happy to eat humble pie. I have seen a lot of Aussie under age teams, I just hope he improves his man management skills.
10. I detected improved team spirit or more importantly a sense of team that was absent last year, particullarly late.
11. It's a shame that we have so many away games early, the start will be all important because getting the team CONFIDENT both individually and collectively early bells may well dictate the end result
12. I feel a bit better.

Sorta out of left field but on the basic of putting your best 11 on the park...

If Jakes injury keeps him out for a bit ... and with junior playing so well ...

What about moving Poso to right back and Tavares back to a CB position along side Fatty with Junior and Monty doing the screening... not perfect I know.

Playing boring football could easily cost him his job as the majority of the crowd simply won't accept it. The majority of our support demand to be excited and won't accept measured possession football (See Moss P)

Me? You go on the pitch with 1 point, as a very minimum come off with it. A view not shared by all I expect.
