ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Usain Bolt!

Just got a message from the mother in law on the answering machine.

Hay Al is Usain Bolt playing for your team.

Now it really is everywhere

Said to her a lot thinks it’s a gimmick.

Her reply but it’s good publicity for your club

Well that should tip you over the line BA.

Mother in laws always know best ;)

So far most of the international coverage has been positive - less so in Australia. This may be because some in the MSM have a vested interest in other codes and also by our moral guardians' at SBS.

While on the face of it there is plenty of reason to think Bolt cannot make it. There are plenty of reasons to think he can. There are also levels of success to consider.

If he gets a contract is that success, if he provides an assist, if he scores a goal, if he increases our crowds, if he increases out TV exposure, if he increases our sponsorship, if we sell him on at a huge profit.

There will be multiple measures and Bolt will have his own measures, which I suspect are a lot higher than mine.

Bolt was scouted for athletics from football, having been a decent footballer and cricketer until that stage, He grew up where spending time outside was the norm - rather than in Australia where playing Playstation now seems more normal and then has had a long professional sports career so his background fitness will not be a problem. While he is a 'sprint' athlete his stamina cannot really be in question when he completed multiple 300m repetitions at pace in each two hour session, usually with two sessions a day. He participated and excelled at the highest level in what is one of the most technical sports in the world so is obviously intelligent enough to be able to receive and implement instruction.

He may fail - he may succeed.

Probably the most valid comparison is to Timmy last year for his value to the team and the competition.

The biggest drawcard last year in the HAL supposedly was Timmy Cahill. He played 94 minutes in 6 games, didn't score, had no assists and probably brought few to the game or to the TV audience. Bolt, virtually only has to make it on the field this season to have as big an impact on the HAL as 'the biggest name in Australian football' Timmy did last season.

The other thing to be taken into account is his determination to succeed. He had to have that determination to succeed in athletics -- there are so many other excellent sprinters around that natural talent will only take you so far.
He is now determined to be a professional footballer, so you'd be very courageous to put money on him not making it. I admit I'm not convinced that he will, but I sure as hell wouldn't bet on it.

Spot on, why do this if he thinks he will humiliate himself. He seems focused and has a point to prove so that’s enough for me at the moment. Just going to enjoy the ride.

The other thing too is his attitude towards the club. He's stated his gratitude to the club for giving him a go, so I believe he'll bust a gut not to let the club down. This is just the attitude we want all the players to have. Doesn't matter if you win or lose, your attitude is what counts.

I'm sure someone will make a supporters banner along the lines of GO HARD DICK!

Back in the inaugural year of the nbl, we did a deal with win 4 to televise the games. We had an american import named slack .......... newcastle had a forward by the name of dick. When dick was subbed on the commentator inadvertantly called “ it looks like dick will be on slack “.

I have to admit it seems more plausable now that the information is more comprehensive with the face to face interviews. The lid is off the biscuit tin so to speak ........... although the $ deals involved in the contract will probably never be public.

I still find it hard to reconcile how even an elite athlete that he is ............... can gain the experience needed to match it with other a-league players ........... many of who have come through the ranks of australian national teams over many years ????.

If he doesn’t make it to sign a contract, and I suppose that would be a requisite of taking the field in a game, then all the $ talk is of no consequence, so a motive to give him a contract is on the cards................. however, Bolt’s determination and body language indicates he is sincere in his endeavour and separates him from the circus............and that alone is worth following as I am sure money is not driving his endeavour .................. maybe his management team ????.

All the news so far that I have seen has been good advertising for the ccm and that is a good thing, even the guys at the dog park were talking about him. They are all afl people and reckon he has a better skill set that would favour afl
