Mariners Squad - 2019-2020

My concern is that we haven’t got a single indisputable first team quality player signed for next season. Some like Murray and Clisby would get time at other teams, but would rely on players around them to look good - ala storm roux at victory.

If our team is made up of this quality player again, we are in a world of hurt.

Ok I might upset a few people but I would rather sign Jem than Tommy. Yes he is good but he has apparently had a few injuries this year and not getting any younger. I would rather keep Jem and invest in another visa player rather than Tom.
Shhhh you can’t say that out loud.

However over the last couple of weeks I’ve seen Jem grow into the leader this club needs. He also is aggressive which is an important quality to have to play in Australia. Originally i didn’t see anything in Jem but I think he is adapting well and is going to shine under Staj.

Tom is quality and i think he is great but we have had to many players all of the same position and style in Tom Aiden and now Jem with Melling washing there kits bit also the same player.

We need a more box to box midfielder like Isais to control our team.

Tom is probably being let down by our lopsided attack and lack of wingers with pace to break but he is not controlling the middle.

So it then comes down to defence and Jem has it won over Tom for aggression.

We need to stop having to many defensive midfielders and get some to control the attack.

Jem over Tom for me.

Have both you say. I think we need variety and a different type of midfielder to go with Jem.

The club doesn’t seem to keen on Tom and I won’t be disappointed until i see the useless replacement

I agree that is true this year - but I would be happy with Tom and Jem in CM being covered by Melling initially and Nisbet. The chances are Aiden will not be here.

Losing Aiden will further weaken our defence which has been diabolical for 5 years.

How many of our 'shit' players have gone on to be decent at other teams?

Not too many...In fact I can`t think of any.

There’s more than enough keeper talent in this county, so that role aside, we need to hustle and willingly pay some overs for 5 quality Australian players

I think we need to hustle on keepers - there are not that many good ones around to start with and even fewer available.

I'd go after Birighitti with the guarantee of 1st team Football. Send Gauci to the Yoof and bring in Munford as 2nd keeper or 3rd keeper.

Nice idea, but I can't see him coming here. Galekovic won't be there much longer.
Beside an ex scummer goalie. Do we want another?

. the defensive midfield imbalance has been doing my head in for years ... and the imbalance that i refers to is just numbers - we seem to have 25 defensive midfielders (which is some feat in a 23 man squad) and they are always* our big-money/name signings

. in an abbreviated timeline, we've had:
- Spencer
- Mile
- Rostyn
- Hutch & Monty (with a bit of Oli)

. then with the end of the Arnie era we seem to have become DM fetishists ... and i am not going to troll through player lists to grab everybody (and will probably get some of this wrong), so in broad terms:
  • we had Monty and wee-Rose ... our captain and probably most consistent player combined with an up-and-comer who also won the Mariners medal
  • so where do we spend our money next ... Tavares
  • solution? play someone out of position (and probably de-rail their career)
  • after that failure we are back to a reliance on Monty
  • until we force him into retirement (while still being our most dependable player), why?
  • we have at least two more DMs to bring in ... don't worry Rose can still play in the backline (who needs specialists when you have DMs)
  • so despite having two of our best players (and highest earners) in the Tom/Vout pairing, how do we strengthen our squad mid-season? Melling
  • perhaps feeling a little overweight in the DM position - we drop Vout (despite being under contract) and who do we bring in? Aiden
  • now you may think that this is getting a bit retarded ... and when we start seeing McGlinchey deployed as a DM you realise there is only one option
  • strengthen the DM position ... our mid-season signings start with Nisbett and Jem
. this has been coupled with a variety of other players such as McGing who was a DM until we realised that a 26th DM in the squad meant somebody had to play at the back

* not necessarily the biggest - but typically still big-money, relatively

Been driving me mental as well. Sure it’s been driving most mental for that matter.

I put it down to A) Okon and probably now Monty believing it’s the most important position, B) the fact attackers are too expensive and C) good attackers are harder to get. Oh and D) recruitment incompetence.

We’ve needed a proper CAM and Keeper for five years and a 10 goal plus striker since the snake left.

I’d hoped several times that we had our experienced CB, but the one who imo was the best, Baro, we let go. He was quality and made Golec look good. Physio said he was our hardest working player off the pitch too. Could have definitely gotten 2 more years out of him imo.

Anyway, now we keep needing to add an experienced leader at CB to our line up. And bottom line, the spine that should drive any team has only had strength in DM. And then when things aren’t working, that’s where we seem to tinker hardest. Maddening.

I read this forum regularly and get a lot of valuable insights into CCM and the A-League in general (am relatively new to the world of football) but rarely post. This may have been covered before so apologies upfront if that is the case. A comment re our oversupply of DMs. I’ve heard (hearsay) that when Mulvey arrived, he wanted Baro, Brama and Tom H to leave. 2 did and were replaced by Cisse and perhaps McGlinchey (as visa player at least) but Tom H stood his ground and stayed. When Jem arrived in Jan, Mulvey made the point he tried to get him earlier in the season but it didn’t work out (ie Tom H stayed?) so perhaps when things looked dire in Jan and we had to be seen to do something they brought in Jem irrespective of his position just to give the club some sort of quality signing and lift? Just a thought but it would make sense why we have 2 DMs taking visa spots. Jem was Mulvey’s intended Tom H replacement but Tom stood by his contract. That said, I’d love both to stay for reasons clearly expressed by many in this forum...

We’ve needed a proper CAM
It’s worth considering that both DDS and Hoole to a lesser extent could have filled that role but haven’t been able to do it consistently to the standard required. Especially with DDS you could see the clubs intention was good but he had too many invisible games to go with his bursts of talent.

Watching Sydney v Perth. O'Neill has gone past Brilliante as a player imho. Castro, Ninkovic and LeFrondre looks technically miles ahead of everyone else.
Perth rested two starting 11 CB's (oh to have some depth) but Lowry is so dominant he did it all on his own. The commentator suggessting that he is close to a Socceroo call up. Popa gave his son a run (he isn't very good lol). Lowry had an English CB partner that isn't getting game time because they have Spiranovic and Drillbit (sic).....he would be worth a trial.

Rumour at the moment but I've heard whispers City might be chasing Oar

That would be nice, too much money for not enough impact. Even if fit we need wide men, midfielders and forwards that can contribute to the goal tally.
