Not unhappy with a home game against the Reds tbh. Probably preferable to an away game against them or $ity.

Stajcic's side saw off the spirited challenge of NPL club Hume City in a quarter-final tie at ABD Stadium in Broadmeadows on Tuesday night, facing down a boisterous – and at times hostile – environment as well as a team that Stajcic rated highly.

The Mariners advanced with a stoppage-time winner, a goal that cued ugly post-match scenes just moments later, when disgruntled Hume fans hurled bottles and cans at the pitch just as the Mariners players were leaving.

It didn't perturb Stajcic, who believes he is moulding a squad that could not only bring some joy back to a fan group that has had little to smile about for years, but also cause problems for all the title favourites.

But, he acknowledges, the Mariners need to be more ruthless when they get goal opportunities if they are to make that sort of improvement.

"I thought some of our build-up, creativity and forward runs in the second half [were] much better, but certainly our play in the front third and the penalty box needs to improve if we are to be competitive in the A-League.

"Some of the execution and shooting wasn't clinical enough for this level, but there were a lot of pleasing aspects.

"Cup runs such as this one do help lift the vibe around Gosford and give fans some hope for the future.

"It's baby steps for us. Every win we take. Every FFA Cup match, every A-League match, every friendly is important for us in building the belief and confidence back, not only in the playing group but in the admin staff and the whole club, the fan group as well."

Stajcic has brought together many players who have had false starts in their careers and believes he can get them to gel with purpose.

"We all know players like Ruon Tongyik (ex-Melbourne City), Sammy Silvera (former Western Sydney), Danny De Silva (back from a loan spell at Sydney) Tommy Oar, a former Socceroo, we just know their potential.

"As long as they can get into a good rhythm of playing regular matches week in,week out, I think we are going to be genuinely competitive."

Stajcic hasn't even minded the long gap between the A-League season ending last May and the new one beginning in October.

"This team is a new team, three quarters have been put together this year. It's the longest pre-season in the history of football, but for us it's very important. The combinations, the chemistry, it only improves the more you train and play together."

Adelaide only scored 1 against the jets who played with 10 for 80 odd minutes. And their goal was a howler from moss that they managed to pounce on. We’re definitely in with a shot and if we make it through to the final we’ve had to knock over 2 A league teams to get there.

City will be too good for the strikers so that one will a formality.

Watched both ties and City look the more polished and dangerous imo. Time to beat another HAL side. They want a cupset... that's CCM making the final if you ask me.

City easily disposed of an under strength WSW as they had heaps of more experienced players out so I don’t read too much into their performance they will be hard to beat in round 1. Only good thing is these players are coming back over the next few weeks so will not have played together much.

Was wishing for Strikers or Reds and a home Semi is great especially as we do not have many home games in the first 4 of 5 rounds. From what I’ve read the Reds were not brilliant against the Jets who had a definite hand ball Pen waved away.

I think we will put on a good show against the Reds, City look sharp and gee they have some depth with every Sub I thought wow. Top 2 or 3 this year and if Noone stays fit he will tear up the HAL.

Whoever won that match was going to be a favourite to go all the way. I’m not surprised that City looked good and they’re shaping up to be a very good side this year. The second and third goals were top quality. If Najjarine didn’t stuff up so many chances it would have gotten embarrassing. Worth noting that we only lost 2-0 in a friendly with a largely second string side and Jamieson gave us a wrap saying we’ll be much more competitive, he didn’t have to name us but he did.
WSW helped them look good with some average defending and didn’t do themselves any favours in front of goals when their chances came. Yeboah hooked at half time, Babbel must have been furious.

Wanderers look like us in front of goal. But our keeper and defence is better than theirs. City on the other hand look a step above us right now.
To be fair to WSW they were probably short of 6 players that will be first teamers including Duke and the new visa striker
