Brisbane Roar FC v Central Coast Mariners

I watched the Western something or other game expecting every second for us to capitulate and holding my breath. Seemed like an absolute miracle win. Most people seem very positive. Which I love to be...So I honestly don't know if I can trust my own judgement on this on. Stoked to win and finally get a clean sheet. But I didn't see a quality defensive shut out at all.

To me, based on the comparative chances and performances of both teams, 99 times out of a hundred we lose that game.

What I saw was one incredibly lucky deflection goal from a defensive mid fielder and otherwise almost zero other chances with poor territory and poor ball retention... meanwhile we have clearances off the line, and owe everything else to a keeper pulling off the stand out performance of the round. Meanwhile they play in our final third almost at leisure and blaze chances in front of goal over the cross bar and fail to convert a number of other real chances. We also looked timid and panicky for much of the game.

There were some very positive defensive performances, namely Birra, Ziggy, Miller, Rowles, and Oar for mine in attack. Nisbet looked good when he came on too. But we have a big problem upfront. We lack attacking width, and even if Staj plays less conservative and starts to get our fullbacks forward more, I'm not sure they have the ability. DDS did not do the job he needs to in his role. And we lack the critical and needed focal point a striker offers.

I may have to re-watch. I invite everyone to tell me what you think I'm missing or where I'm going wrong.

Against Roar. Interesting dilemma, If we stick with the same formation and Duric comes back in for Stens, then we need him to stay very attack minded. He's much better at it than Kim or GG, but in truth all 3 need to think this way much more often. We can't have 8 defenders and 3 attackers. And especially then one of those (DDS) thinking they need to come deep to try and get things started. And critically if Kim is dropping between the CB's to play out from a back three, then our fullbacks have to have the confidence to get high and wide. Every other decent side does it. If we can't we will always struggle in attack.

If Miller isn't fit, probably bring GG to RB and keep the back line the same as Ziggy was excellent central and I actually think Pain would have more success against him than Miller.

Do we play 4231 and start Murray as a central striker? Surely we're looking at playing with an actual striker again? But that means dropping Stens or Kim for Duric. And Stens out and GG at RB would mean two of our most energetic mids would likely be missed.

Problem is we aren't really balanced as we have much better mids than we have strikers. So I understand why Staj is doing what he is. And why he just wanted to baton down teh hatches against WU. He's the polar opposite of Okon. Highly adaptive. Changes to suit the best players at hand and the opposition he's playing.

So I'm very interested to see what he does and if we can improve on last three games in going forward and not losing the midfield. Because we won't win many games like the last one imo.

Also very interested to see whether our players get some confidence back. Too often for my liking they looked scared in possession.

Sitting here nodding in agreeance like a bobblehead.
I'll make one comment about the park the bus thing. I think of all the things we need to work on the most it is our capacity to not concede. It's really hard on our budget to build a we'll score more than you kind of squad. I'd expect more of these hyperdefensive setups until maybe 2/3 - 3/4 of the way through the season. BUT we have a very very good bundle of midfielders, young and experienced. Once they work out a rhythm gees we'll be good.

Ok so I haven’t just gone loco then

definitely not. We were 100% lucky to first get the goal, because GG can barely claim it , and whilst the majority of our defending was brilliant we were still lucky not to throw it away. But in saying that, it’s about f**king time that kind of luck came our way.

In saying that our game plan limited the way they wanted to play .
They may of had 20 shots but most were dross . Bershia blew a well , not quite a sitter as the pass was poor

The stensness case . While everyone seems to want to can him.
He does 15ks a match (i guess) probably only tommy works as hard and
Defuses bomb after bomb.
I think staj will play him .

Okay then - what is your preferred midfield/striker combination?
Jair dds milan tommy gg steins
Edit
The equation is the workers are gg kim stens
Only stens and gg are good for 90 minutes
DDs milan are 60 minutes players
Tommy should be rested after 75 which we cant at the moment.
Sammy as well, but where .i think 9 till jair is 100%
You need a solid work horse .stens is it.

I think stens will play because of his motor .
For now.

For his debut season Stensness has been sensational for us, but full credit has to go to Staj.
His recruiting has unearthed some gems like Silvera, Stensness and Djuric whilst the debuts of Miller and Nizzy also gives hope for the future.
Whilst Djuric is a lot older he can provide the guidance these guys need.
The future looks bright,we`ve turned the corner and we`re on the up.
We just need to be patient and enjoy the ride whilst we can.
There`s still a long way to go though...
