Jair, Duric, I assume to be added to the side plus add Nisbet, WeeMax, Fox, Tongyik, and Murry on the bench ....

Love to win this over our boggy team...

    Real competition for starting places

    What's you're starting 11...

Djuric for Stensness. That is all.

    Keep the same backline.
Milan needs to come back in, whether he plays at 10 or in the box to box role that Stens did Sunday. And it’s a pretty tough call to drop Stens but a great problem to have.
Hope jair is ready to go. He’d 100% be on the bench and maybe get 30mins.
I’d keep the same front 3. Roars backline are all big lumps so there’ll be plenty of fouls from them on our small speedy dribblers.

As long as Sam dribbles at them this game, he seemed very reticent to do it against WU. With him, Tommy and DDS flying at them, it will be interesting to see how they cope.

Would be nice to see Jair off the bench but with 2 weeks to go until the bye maybe Staj will hold off depending on how he's travelling. The Sydney game might see a more defensive setup similar to the one we fielded against WU as well which would fit with holding off introducing him.

I think same back line if Miller pulls up ok. Stensness off for Duric if he's ready to start again and that's probably the harshest call to make. I'd like to see Muzz get a run but he could be tricky to include, might have to be at GGs expense if we did but again it would be a harsh call. We should be in with a good shot to win this one as long as we keep our structure while going forward. There will be goals to be had from them which is why I'd like to see a striker but if Oar and Silvera run a bit narrower it might be enough. More than enough footage available of their weaknesses to take advantage of.

I watched the Western something or other game expecting every second for us to capitulate and holding my breath. Seemed like an absolute miracle win. Most people seem very positive. Which I love to be...So I honestly don't know if I can trust my own judgement on this one. Stoked to win and finally get a clean sheet. But I didn't see a quality defensive shut out at all.

To me, based on the comparative chances and performances of both teams, 99 times out of a hundred we lose that game.

What I saw was one incredibly lucky deflection goal from a defensive mid fielder and otherwise almost zero other chances with poor territory and poor ball retention... meanwhile we have clearances off the line, and owe everything else to a keeper pulling off the stand out performance of the round. Meanwhile they play in our final third almost at leisure and blaze chances in front of goal over the cross bar and fail to convert a number of other real chances. We also looked timid and panicky for much of the game.

There were some very positive defensive performances, namely Birra, Ziggy, Miller, Rowles, and Oar for mine in attack. Nisbet looked good when he came on too. But we have a big problem upfront. We lack attacking width, and even if Staj plays less conservative and starts to get our fullbacks forward more, I'm not sure they have the ability. DDS did not do the job he needs to in his role. And we lack the critical and needed focal point a striker offers.

I may have to re-watch. I invite everyone to tell me what you think I'm missing or where I'm going wrong.

Against Roar. Interesting dilemma, If we stick with the same formation and Duric comes back in for Stens, then we need him to stay very attack minded. He's much better at it than Kim or GG, but in truth all 3 need to think this way much more often. We can't have 8 defenders and 3 attackers. And especially then one of those (DDS) thinking they need to come deep to try and get things started. And critically if Kim is dropping between the CB's to play out from a back three, then our fullbacks have to have the confidence to get high and wide. Every other decent side does it. If we can't we will always struggle in attack.

If Miller isn't fit, probably bring GG to RB and keep the back line the same as Ziggy was excellent central and I actually think Pain would have had more success against him than Miller.

Do we play 4231 and start Murray as a central striker? Surely we're looking at playing with an actual striker again? But that means dropping Stens or Kim for Duric. And Stens out and GG at RB would mean two of our most energetic mids would likely be missed.

Problem is we aren't really balanced as we have much better mids than we have strikers. So I understand why Staj is doing what he is. And why he just wanted to baton down the hatches against WU. He's the polar opposite of Okon. Highly adaptive. Changes to suit the best players at hand and the opposition he's playing.

So I'm very interested to see what he does and if we can improve on last three games in going forward and not losing the midfield. Because we won't win many games like the last one imo.

Also very interested to see whether our players get some confidence back. Too often for my liking they looked scared in possession.

Sitting here nodding in agreeance like a bobblehead.
I'll make one comment about the park the bus thing. I think of all the things we need to work on the most it is our capacity to not concede. It's really hard on our budget to build a we'll score more than you kind of squad. I'd expect more of these hyperdefensive setups until maybe 2/3 - 3/4 of the way through the season. BUT we have a very very good bundle of midfielders, young and experienced. Once they work out a rhythm gees we'll be good.

Yeah so after the AU game I was feeling pretty negative and so stayed out of talking too much about the WU game. I thought we were poor against WU and I'll take the win but it was luck as much as grit.

I'm looking forward to Jair fit (and Duric) as it gives Staj the tactical flexibility he'll be looking forward too.

I do think we should beat roar. Hoping to see a return to the clinical play and fire in the belly that was so evident in the first few rounds.

I think bouncing back off two convincing defeats and facing a team that has shown it's dangerous anywhere in the front third prompted the cagey and overly defensive display. It was what we needed to do to steady the ship and now we can work on a more balanced approach. Even a draw in the situation we were in would have been acceptable. I think we'll fare much better if we take the game to a team like Brisbane than defending heavily, on the other hand it's much harder to put a team like Sydney on the back foot so the following round may be a similar set up to the WU game.

The defense should improve over time as they are still getting use to each other.

It's his post match analysis of the WU match AS said the defense will improve as the season goes.

We need a 12 to 15 goals a year striker and hopefully Jair is it.

Love to win this one and go back to back.

    Good summation FP.

I too have been hesitant to post about the WU game as I was not all that impressed with the quality. Loved the grit, but we could have easily lost due to some poor errors.
We seemed to be far to hesitant in attack. A bit like Okon ball when after a bright start to the season the players became more worried about losing the ball than attacking.

Things that have been worrying me a bit all season.
    1) We do not hold the ball well. There are too many players with poor first touches. We seem to be ok when we are attacking at speed on the break, but lack finish.
    2) In defence, the DMs tend to play deep which is probably necessary because we give away the wings too easily. Possibly because we are playing 4222 or 42211too much. This could be the reason why Silvera is not effective in defence. I would like to see us move into a flat 442 (Arnie style) but without the mids getting too deep.
    3) Apart from long diagonal balls which are good but not very effective, because it takes too long for someone to receive the ball in a shooting position it looks to me that we have difficulty linking from defensive midfield to attack. Maybe it is time to get Oar out wide on the left wing and bring Silvera into a #10 role. I would prefer him there as he has better shooting ability than DDS who could possibly be on the right wing. Murray or Jair up front. Play 4231 in attack with one DM (Milan) playing box to box. The other DM probably has to be Kim/Gallifuco. Gallifuco worries me whenever he is in our box. It could very easily have been his 3rd pen conceded off the upper arm. I would like to see more of Nisbet as he is quick with his decision making and accurate with his passes and could be the answer to quick transition.

I was scared that Pain would be a problem but Miller handled him better than most fullbacks in this league.

Obviously defence was the order of the day and we got away with it with grit and luck rather than skill. A lot of improvement to come. I suspect with our squad, if they play with confidence, attack may be a better form of defence.

I agree with what you're saying about our performance.
People getting excited because we won. Yeah, I got excited too.
But that first half was hard to watch. There was only one team going to score and it wasn't us.
The WSW, Perth & Jets game we were on the back foot for long periods of the game. Or at least it appeared that way.
Granted, we are far better than last season, but we need to improve.

As I said to Style_Cafe the other night. I was surprised he picked the same team for the Melbourne City game as against Perth.
While no one deserved to be dropped I thought he picked a team to play Perth and beat them. Part of that was the surprise team selection.
Surely picking the same team a few days later helped MC. That has to be one of our main weapons this years. Surprise.

    Never a dull moment.

Brisbane were labelled ‘boring’ very strongly last week.
I think we need to be prepared for them to go all out at us in the first 20min next week.

We will need to keep the ball away from them for the first 25 or so, then start taking more risks as the game progresses.

Do we start Nizzy next week to hold possession and turn on the ball than swap him out?
Could be the trick we need.

Spot on but when do we win those games. Keeper had a good game but defense was solid. Attack needs a lot of work but we are building a base.

WU have been giving everyone trouble and we lost to first place and a hot AU side.

Yeah we’ve been dominated alot in all games but I like the frame work.

Lets see how we do against Roar who haven’t been to bad in the little I’ve watched of them. Just unlucky on some finishes

I so badly want nizzy in there at 10. The little fella buzzing around like a madman. He's just so different to the other midfielders. Up in his home state, his family will probs come down. Great incentive to get him on the paddock.

Duric for Stens. Judas in Gosford.

This might not be the game for it but I'd like to see what Roberts is like. Off the bench perhaps?

When we first played under Arnie we probably had scored about the same at a similar time of the season. Alen seems to be a similar manager. Get the defence right and build on that during the season.

Hated the first half at the game but on replay Diamanti seemed to be the only one that was a constant worry. I suspect he will be the POTY so a lot of teams will struggle against him
