The ground has historical significance for the NT & the FFA are praying for a repeat of this:

Especially considering it will be against yet again CONCACAF opponents to qualify, this fact won't be lost on the marketing brains at FFA.

The only playoff I can remember against Concacaf was in '93 - we beat Canada in a shootout at the SFS with a long-haired Schwarzer the hero. It's Comnebol we've played off against multiple times in relatively recent times ('93, '01, '05).

Wish it was Canada again.

He saved two penalties in a shootout then as well.

Or Iran.

The ISIS built 'Shiite expressway' is just about complete, linking Tehran straight to Damascus.

Iran would wanna hury up and get the game in, as the US military are gearing to blow it up. :p

Former player & American hero, Alexi Lalas is the US equivalent of Mark Bosnich, in slamming his countryman & current generation as 'Tattooed Millionares' for putting the USA in a similar predicament to the Socceroo's of possibly not qualifying for Russia 2018.

It's been confirmed by the AFC,

The away leg of Australia's 2018 World Cup qualifier playoff against Syria will be played in Abu Dhabi not Malaysia as previously indicated.

Seems the journo? who wrote the article? I read somewhere has either 'jumped the gun' or got the 'wrong mail' on this one :

Socceroos, Australia v Syria: Confirmation of venue delayed for away leg of World Cup play-off

THE Socceroos still don’t have an answer on where the away leg of their World Cup play-off with Syria will be held after a late hitch, says Fox Sports football reporter Daniel Garb.

With the first leg of the AFC play-off to take place on October 5, it was reported on Monday night that either Jordan, Qatar or the United Arab Emirates will play hosts to the war-torn Syrian team, who backflipped on their initial desire to play in Malaysia.

Reports from overseas suggest Abu Dhabi is the frontrunner.

But Garb reports a “late hitch” has seen the official announcement stall, which delays FFA’s ability to arrange logistics before the crucial qualifier.

“Still no call on location for the Socceroos game in Syria,” Garb tweeted.

“Abu Dhabi was almost confirmed before [a] late hitch. [Three weeks] away, frustrating for FFA.

“Smacks of pure gamesmanship from the Syrians. These fixtures are logistical nightmares – [the] longer they wait harder they make it for the Socceroos.”

AAP reporter Vince Rugari claims Syria had preferred to play in Malaysia, but changed their mind late after Australia finished third in Group B.

Australia have confirmed the location of their home leg – on October 10 – with the match to be played at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

The AFC would be more than happy to see Syria go through than Aus to the next qualifier.

The Socceroo's game agains't syria is being played in malaysia.
NO Syd .... read the post/twitter posts above.

The decision of where Syria will play their home leg of the qualifier has been delayed.

Syria, initially indicated that they would continue to play their home games in Malaysia, as they have done for games prior BUT have since had a change of mind about where to play.

Seeking to find a venue/country that they deem will give them an advantage over the Socceroos ....... most likely.

Laughable really, as a trip to the Middle East is shorter and easier for most of our European Socceroo's than flying further to Malaysia.

Just the warmer temperatures to deal with
