ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

It is Tuesday yet? CCM V Scum

Enough of the goo feasting and conspiracies.Time to be analytic.
Last night's performance was crap.
Too many things worked against us and they showed.
1- We could not lift for a third time in 3 games. The last two games the team gave 100% and played above themselves. Last night was a bridge too far. Olly especially looked tired.
2- The strategic timed release of the rumour of DDS going to the Bulls was a low act by Macarthur. and obviously affected the squad's mental state. Add to that missing Ruon would not have helped the confidence even though Hall filled in well.
3- For the first 20 minutes Newcastle played with flair with nothing to lose. They played a game that has always unsettled our team even going back to the days when Roar under Ange used to do it. They continually attacked the player in possession with a swarming forward defence. Usually they usually run out of puff and if it can be withstood for the the first 20 to 30 mins ascendency can be regained. Last night we conceded and did not have the attacking firepower to get back in the game.
4- Newcastle were allowed to play a physical game with the ref allowing many fouls. They used these tactics to stop Matty holding the ball and the ref allowed it.

I do not think too much should be read into players blowing up and not shaking hands when subbed. They were totally pissed off with the performance. I would have been more concerned if they accepted it with no emotion.

I will post later about what I saw in our on field tactics and individual performances.

Lifting for the next game will be vital and will tell us a lot about finals hopes. Personally I am hopeful without being overly optimistic, however I have been surprised many times this season.
Quality summary there AM - and about how I saw it.

I was quite pleased by Dan Hall's performance and think he will become a mainstay in CB next season unless we can hold onto Ruon.

Essentially, the scum flooded the midfield and snuffed out any potential for central forward play. They compensated by allowing in more crosses but with their giant 3 at the back were happy to let us send those in ineffectively all day. I'm usually not too critical of Staj but I think it was his job to recognise this and shift the structure. Urena into 10 and Bouman upfront was the answer (IMO) but we didn't do it.

Agree. It seemed to be a change in our tactics to attack from width rather than try an open up the middle. Probably brought about by the absence of DDS. It did not suit Nizz and Bouman is not a wide player. It left the team with no middle in attack and a massive hole in midfield.

I have not been a fan of Staj's 4222 formation but can understand why Staj has been playing it.
The simple answer is that we have plenty of midfielders but none of them are wingers. It is not too unusual in the modern game with full backs being wide attackers but usually teams play 4231 with forwards filling the traditional wing position. Unfortunately we do not have the forwards who can play that wide role.
DDS is really a central AM.
Nizz is a box to box midfielder. I would like to see him as an AM.
Bouman is a #10/striker and lost on the wing.
I suspect Janota is an AM.
Urena is also a #10/striker.
Matty is a striker.
Kuol is a striker who could be a winger but has lots to learn first.
Staj has had to make the most of the players available and I believe has made an excellent fist of an almost impossible situation.
Hopefully with this year's performance and Staj's credibility along with new ownership we will be in a better position to recruit for next year.
Be in no doubt there will be a need for new players. With so many clubs with money to spend and our performance this year there will be offers made to our better players that will be had to resist in a financial sense.

This. And you have to admit, we've done pretty damn well for a rebuild year (I kind of think of this one as our first true rebuild year. Last year wasn't).

Personally, I still don't see why we haven't reverted to the tactics we started the year with.

God, we're a frustrating team to follow, aren't we?

Last night wasn't just about tactics though......

Olly did shake hands with Staj watch the replay on Kayo. Don’t believe the conspiracy theorists all the time especially after we’ve played the Bulls as sometimes it takes a while to get rid of the bullshit...
I think it's a bit much to have jumped to 'Staj leaving' from that.

For me, it would have just suggested some sort of tension, an argument prematch. Let's stop the 'Staj leaving' talk. It's come out of literally nowhere.

Anyway, thanks for clearing it up.

We’ve had opportunities to recruit wide players and we haven’t. Working with the cattle you’ve got doesn’t fly after 2 off seasons to recruit to change the tactics. If we don’t have any wide players it’s because we’ve recruited to fit the system or expected players to adapt.

Hasn't Staj really only had 1 off season?
Although I remember a few of us thinking before the season that we had too many similar players.

There's a whole world of players out there. If we can't find someone suitable to play on the wing (assuming that's what we want) then our recruiting is really poor. I think it's far more likely we've recruited to fit the system or thought we could have a player like Bouman or Janota adapt which hasnt really happened. DDS has been good for us but doesn't spend a lot of his time in possession out on the sideline.

You think we are $ity or Syd FC and can buy whoever we want?

I'd call it 1.5 - Mulvey was sacked early 2019 but some stuff may have already been locked in hindering Staj. That season we just missed out on the Korean attacker for some reason. But last off season was definitely his to work with and for us to not end up with an obvious starting quality wing on either side suggests design over bad luck.

Yes that's clearly what I said  If we can't find someone to play on the wing on our budget - remembering we've spent money on Janota, Bouman, Jankovic (spelling?) - then it's on the club not some incredible shortage of players all making 500k per season. It's far more likely to have been by design rather than error or incompetence.

holy shit you are insufferable, you think after signing Urena that our owner was willing to pay anything over minimum wage for anyone else?

You’re either being daft or deliberately disingenuous. If you want to disagree that’s fine but if you don’t want to see a valid argument there that’s on you and there’s no point continuing the conversation.
because I don't see a valid argument at all! "Ohh if he wanted a winger he should have just bought one, so it must be by design" buy a winger with what?!! he had to bring in Casella from NPL1 on a developmental contract for god's sake
