Two good free kicks by Hoole i’ll give him that this week. I said to my wife at half time that I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose this 3-2. That’s how predictably unfit our team is, the last 15 mins none of them could even run so that allowed MV to attack wave after wave and the inevitable happened. Elvis cut us apart and it took us 20 mins to start trying to mark him. He is going to be a good player. I think he single handily won MV the game, great sub by Muscrat. And he made Millar look shit with the amount of space and time he had. Jem looked ok but he didn’t look like he enjoyed his first taste of HAL refereeing when you are not SFC or MV. Tip him to get a red card by the end of season. Simon is just frustrating, if he buried that header with 5 to go it may have lifted the team to hold on. I hate they give us some hope and then MM does something to them at half time to challenge them to lose with a good lead. Just unbelievable.
I said 4-2 to my bride...

Disappointing result. Positive is we really took it to a side who have played the best football in the competition of late. Turning point in the second half was Muscat hooking a midfield player and bringing on Elvis. They changed shape to 3 up front and Triosi playing higher. Really put pressure on our back three. MM didn't respond and we were on the back foot then on.

Sorry TB. Rowles was a train wreck. He did some great stuff but his error factor and positioning at times is more than alarming.

I believe we will win next week.

I don't rate him.

But Mulvey (in the City press conference) reckons he has been one of our best players this season)...

Admittedly that bar isn't very high, but I still think Mulvey is wrong.

Hiariej, Pain, Millar, Simon, McGing, O'Neill, Hoole and even Melling (marginally);have been better?

I also rate Clisby more than him (and Golec too)...

f**k we find another way to loose... biggest difference tonight was the two keepers...
I think it’s all about fitness, everyone is fitter and they just run us down in the second half. MM needed to put Oar on earlier and use the third sub for Christ sake so we have some fresh legs. We are really paying for the lateness of the S&C coach.

As gutting as that result was (again), the Roar just gave up a 3-0 lead to Adelaide plus had two players sent off, so it could have been worse! :headbounce:
And if we were fit enough to hang on and win then we wouldn’t be coming last for at least a week. If we can get in front of the roar or Wanderers we might actually avoid the spoon.

Millsnake was good first half and shit 2nd half....should have been hooked.
If we had a decent striker and a decent keeper we would have won that game easily.
This, and the lack of fitness to press for 90mins provides a concise dissection of the Mariners team today

Tbf I think we played pretty well in the first half. Given it's the same thing every week I think enough evidence is in to say that the lads actually do have the ability to play and play well. It's not the other team falling asleep every week...
But clearly there's a serious fitness issue and I don't see that getting solved before season's end.
Well that and we clearly have a goalkeeper issue too...
Definitely

We press heavily during the first half expending a tonne of energy. It works as we are usually first to the ball, dislodge the ball well, throw the oppositions passing off and knocking them out of rhythym.
Until the steam runs out and we don't have the puff to keep it up. Teams must know now to just wait us out.

They're also so wound up to win a game I think they go gangbusters out of the blocks then during halftime the adrenaline dials down. They're aggressive first half and flat the second

I think I should have posted this response in this thread really...

https://www.ftbl.com.au/news/hoole-every-single-week-this-happens-518766
Article hits a very good point right at the start.

(Albert Einstein said the definition of insanity was 'Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.')
What is Mike Mulvey doing to change a very evident problem that has happened 8 times?!

Based on tonight as the final straw for me, our structure/formation when we get tired invites the other team to run at us on the counter and our ‘wing backs’ are now where to be seen leaving us with 1on1 or 2on2 situation.

Need 2 simple strong consistent lines that teams need to fight harder to break through.
And simple so our tired and fatigued players need to be.

Next week I would start with the 2 older mids for a slower but steadier start to see if we still get a goal or 2 like usual, then finish with the fitter and more enthusiastic players to try and hold the match and keep up with the pace.

Mcging Aspro New Rowles
Miller Gem O’Neill Tom Pain
Simon

Miller off - Hoole on: 58min
Jem off - Mell on: 65min
Tom off - New on: 80min

Second half Muscat changed tactic. He went direct and completely bypassed our midfield and limited opportunity for our wingbacks to get back in time to assist.

It was repeatedly 2 on 3 or 3 on 3 almost every time they went long. And with Elvis’s pace it was destroying us. It was very simple and very effective.

Should have had Melling drop back and sit deep, - became mostly pointless having two DM’s in the middle - where we’d been previously winning the contest.

That said. Kennedy absolutely cost us that game.

A ball he should have come for. Yet again. His judgement/ decision making and speed are terrible. And his quadruple panic flap at a ball that was within his grasp and just required one calm little slap to the side was horrendous. Given as an own goal I believe.

I love Matty, but he’s only scored four goals all season and only two of those from open play. It’s a prickly issue, but a serious one. He won one free kick in a great area that led to a goal, but missed two golden chances,

Short story, we have a keeper who lets in goals but we have no one better to replace him, and a starting striker who rarely scores, but he’s on many ways the heart of our side.

Not a good predicament.

TB.
I'd have to watch the replay to get in an argument with you but i'm tipping you have never played in defence.
You simply can't make the technical and positional mistakes that he makes.
Was it Rowles or Melling that tried the stupid back heal that cost us a goal?

O'Neill was head and shoulders above Rowles.
