Last night on the Fox weekend wrap they had an interview with Nathan Tinkler ... in part of the interview he referred to the investment by Man City in Heart to become Melbourne City and his hope he could build up the Jerks over five years were an EPl club would want to invest .... he further said he expected another A-League club to have a majority ownership by an EPL club soon and he inferred over the next few months... does make you think of Everton and us...

He is a nice bloke. Even sorted us out free parking for our mini bus at Pirtek stadium last season when we played the drive bys in the semis.
I didn't know that. We were on the buses, first time to Pirtek like that, quite confronting etc. what with a flashing blue light, through the red lights, police patrol and all, security escort to the gate, and back when the game was over. Good onya Shaun. :)

Central Coast Mariners requested players pay to attend their own awards night

      The financial woes of the Central Coast Mariners took an embarrassing turn last week when the entire playing squad was told to pay for their own admission to the club's end of season awards night.

      In a sign of the extent of the Mariners penny-pinching culture, the club asked the players to pay $50 per head to attend their own function.

      The request was met with immediate dissatisfaction from the playing group - many of whom are out of contract and in the process of negotiating potential extensions or deals elsewhere.

      After being told of their complete unwillingness to dip into their own pockets to attend a club event and pay a total of $100 if they wanted to bring their partners, the club confirmed they quickly backed down and decided to cover the players' costs.

      Central Coast owner Mike Charlesworth has long been vocal about the club's poor financial position and a Mariners spokesman says the initial request was made in order to trim costs.

      "The club is currently reviewing all financial expenses to improve our long term viability and whilst this scenario was one of many options considered to maximise our medal night, It was never really considered a viable option and is definitely not the situation now or in the future," a club spokesman said.

      The club was looking at many ways to trim the costs of their awards night and charging the players and backroom staff was the first considered. All staff's attendance to the event will now be complimentary.

THAT is just bloody embarrasing... Can't even tell me that that would be the thing to tip the scales, I mean, at best it's maybe $4000, if that... It's tokenistic and ridiculous all at the same time. I'd hang my head in shame over this if I was MC... I know I know... "He saved our club", "Noone else wanted to buy" etc. etc. etc... But what good he's done, shouldn't shield him from the repercussions of ridiculous business decisions.

I think the big problem is that whether it's true or not (and it sounds like it never made it past planning meeting chatter) people hear it and could believe it.

Why is this a problem?

Imagine trying to recruit players when people think when you open your wallet bats come flying out.

MC and Storrie are out of the country afaik. Can't imagine either one would think such a petty, miserly, penny pinching idea would be acceptable.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Stalder's idea, TBH...

Haha as we walked from their car park we bowled through a load of typically gobby "Drive by" fans who were mouthing off as some of you got off one of the coaches (looking a bit sheepish). I gave one a gentle spray and they were a bit taken aback to see a dozen yellow shirts strolling around.
NY .....didnt you go to the first ever Wanderers game against us when they were very out of order in the park?

Central Coast Mariners have today appointed Shaun Mielekamp as the club's new Chief Executive Officer.

In what has been a coup for the Mariners, Mielekamp will commence his role on the Central Coast effective immediately and will bring a wealth of experience that includes an instrumental role in the resurgence of South Sydney Rabbitohs, a successful stint at Penrith Panthers as well as an outstanding job at Western Sydney Wanderers since the club’s inception in 2012.

The former Western Sydney Wanderers' General Manager of Commercial & Consumer Business, Mielekamp will work as one of the club’s executives working alongside Kathryn Duncan (Finance Director) and Tony Walmsley (Technical Director/Head Coach) who make up the club’s senior management, reporting directly to Executive Vice Chairman, Peter Storrie.

Storrie noted the recruitment of Mielekamp as a great pick up for the Mariners and said that the club will benefit greatly from his experience in sports administration, local knowledge and strategic partnerships

“I am delighted that Shaun has joined us, who we identified as the person that the Mariners needed to expand our commercial and sponsorship network,” Storrie said.

“Shaun’s appointment has now given us one of the strongest executive teams in the Hyundai A-League, that works as one with our supporters and commercial clients that will give the club sustainability on the coast, along with entertaining, free flowing, attacking football.

“Shaun who lives in the Central Coast has a strong back ground in sport that he will bring to the club, as his record with the Wanderers shows. This will indeed be one of our very successful “transfers” this season.

“He will, I am sure, have a long and successful career at the club and I look forward to working with him,” Storrie said.

Central Coast Mariners owner Mike Charlesworth stamped his support on the appointment of Mielekamp who he sees as a crucial addition to the Mariners administration moving forward.

These guys will really have their management skills tested if the early mail on the FFA Future of Football report Whole of Football Plan is to be believed:

I don't have a problem with Wollongong/Illawarra - its population is dense enough that nearly all residents are within an hour or so of WIN Stadium.

At a stretch, the ACT and all its surrounding LGAs would get you over 500,000 - but many of those people would have a two hour drive each way to go to games in Canberra. It would be like counting the entire Hunter region towards the potential fanbase of the scum when the odds of someone driving from Scone or Merriwa to games in Newcastle on a regular basis is extremely low.

By 2031 the Coast is expected to have a population of around 400,000, so on its own it's nearly there in terms of a long-term viable fan base. Pursue a sensible expansion southward (with 80-90% of games played in Gosford, and full community engagement on the Coast including youth development) and there's no problem at all.
