well holland's in the squad:

Verbeek keeps his options open for Qatar clash
Wednesday, 23 January 2008

Pim Verbeek addresses his players at the third Qantas Socceroos training camp
Getty Images / Matt King Getty Images 18 year old James Holland (Newcastle Jets, Australia) was only four years old when Qantas Socceroos World Cup goalkeeper, Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough), made the first of his 52 appearances for the green and gold.

But, in two weeks time, the two could be team mates when Australias World Cup qualification journey, courtesy of Foxtel, kicks-off on 6 February at Melbournes Telstra Dome.

Holland, who is one of eight Under 23 (Qantas Olyroo) players to be named in the 39 strong Qantas Socceroos squad, has bolted into contention in recent weeks with exciting performances in the Hyundai A-League.

I have deliberately kept the squad big to give us maximum flexibility until match day, Verbeek explained.

The Qantas Socceroos have a very unique set of circumstances with the distances involved, the number of players in overseas leagues and the timing of this first, critical match in the 2010 World Cup campaign.

As an example of the challenges faced by Verbeek, Mark Vidukas Monday morning game (Australian time) in England rules him out of contention for the match, and left sided specialist, Scott Chipperfield, is just returning from injury.

The squad is a blend of experienced campaigners and youth, as well as Hyundai A-League players and those playing overseas.

Every Australian Hyundai A-League club is represented in the squad with finalists Newcastle Jets providing seven of the 39 men including - for the first time in a Qantas Socceroos squad twins, with both Joel and Adam Griffiths included.

I have been very pleased with the way the local players have responded to what were trying to do in the recent training camps we have held, Verbeek said.

I want to give them every opportunity to state their claim to be part of the final 18 man squad which must be named on match day.

Football is a team game and it will take a team effort from many players over the next two years for us to make it, and this is the beginning of a long and challenging journey which promises a feast of football for fans, Verbeek said.

The Qantas Socceroos play Qatar on Wednesday 6 February 2008 at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne with the match commencing at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.

Foxtel are the presenting partner of Australias World Cup journey.

I think it's a good sign that Holland is there. He won't play, but if you're going to pick a squad that large, it would be irresponsible not to have a teenager or two for the sake of getting them into the setup. Zullo might feel hard done by as he has been performing all season.

Arnie was always under pressure to get results but that's something he probably didn't do nearly enough.

i think the jets are overrepresented, musialik and bridge are coming off awful seasons (bridge because he's been shit, while musialik's been injured and ill). how jade north is consistently picked is also beyond my comprehension.

only one roar player is insanity too.

sydney have just the two in there in milligan and brosque, that's probably about right.

wilko can probably curse his late-season form for missing wilko's spot, who's also in bad form at the moment but was otherwise the leading light in a miserly defence while wilko was the leader of a better back line.

djite and dodd are no-brainers, my only surprise is that pantelis didn't get a look.

NTS is farken lucky we have no other left backs - his defending is at times comical, particularly griffiths' goal on friday night.

'Roos To Play Victory Warm-Up

LOCAL Socceroos will be given one last chance to make the final squad in a match against Melbourne Victory, Pim Verbeek has revealed.
The new Australia coach today named a massive 39-man squad for the World Cup qualifier against Qater on February 6.

But he revealed today he will cut that squad down to size following the game behind closed doors against Victory on February 2.

The Australia side will feature all local players and any Euroroos who are able to fly out early to give them a final opportunity to impress.

Their performance in the match will determine whether or not Verbeek calls for the cavalry in Europe and jets in overseas stars for the Qatar game.

By naming the 39-man squad, Verbeek has left his options open for Euroroos to be called up if required to bolster the A-League stars in his side.

He will name his final 18 man squad on Monday, February 4.

ahh yes get rid of most of the jets players and replace them with Mariners players and a guy who would argue with a robot that always agreed with him

NewieUtd - you can't seriously agree with Bridge being in the squad??  Surely we can both take a neutral (as possible) look at that and just go "nup, no way, too far out of form".

It is a massive squad and there are a few surprises in there
Congrats to the Mariners boys
Absolutely stoked that Bolton isn't in the squad, one of the most overrated players in the competition.
I think most of the olyroo boys will be cut when the 18 man squad is announced

Whatever happened to Newcastle fans booing Bridge only a couple of weeks ago. Do you guys love him now.

Surprises for me is jacob burns, Vargas and North.

Still what is the point of this squad. You could of just said ok viduka and chipperfield arn't coming but everyone else is available. simple
