I will probably get a few red cards for this, but think Melling will develop into a pretty decent player. Still only 23 and hasn't had massive runs in sides to enable him to develop quicker. Last night you could see the value of his work rate and aggression. Certainly far from the finished article but if he can improve his distribution and reduce errors he could go far.

Mick can you remind me when he played a better game for us?

Remember when he replaced Glover last season?
After a few rounds?
November 2017?

He played really well, and he was earning a lot of praise. I was actually surprised myself.

Then there was that game against Wanderers at home (just googled it, 16th December 2017), when he let in a very soft goal by Santalab (from long range)...

And I was critical (for either that goal, or one from a game soon after), and people jumped on me for that.
From that point on, mistakes seemed to happen quite often...

My theory at the time was that his November form was a purple patch, and he was just reverting to his normal level (as a sturdy backup keeper).

The biggest factor last night was the desperation from the players. They were cooked (again) and on the back foot but they found away to throw another body at the ball and get block after block. Then the crowd got excited seeing it and jumped on board.

Only one brain fart moment and it cost us a goal but we got out of the game what we put in.

Was pretty pleased with broadly how we were able to play through the high press and counter. That's exactly what we needed to learn.

Agree but it was a pissweak press because De Laut was clueless as striker.

madness that yu would play the best right back int he league at striker.

Certainly wasn't MVC press but it's a good learning experience for them. Working those little triangles, working the counter. I was actually pretty happy with Matty's hold up play too.

Absolutely.

Matty was also hard done by Bert and Good should have been wearing protection.

Finally got around to watching the replay. Just a couple of things that have not been already said.

In the first half City were a much tougher opponent than the Nux or SFC, but we still went to the break 1-0 up. It makes me think this should have been our third win.

City may have had chances to come back and score but so did we.

O'Neil filled in well at center left back, but it is not his position we still need to sign another specialist centre back.

Aspro reminds me of a young Wilko and I think he could go as far.

Melling has improved markedly over the last two games. I suspect it could be due to playing next to Tommy.

We control possession well when Tommy is on the pitch, when he is absent we do not have a clue what to do with the ball in midfield.

Hoole tries but has absolutely no vision when he is on the ball and does not get back with sufficient energy. Unfortunately A-League appears to be a level above his ability.

It was good to get more game time into Tommy, Tommy and Aspro's legs.

I now want to see is take all our chances and smash someone 4 or 5 nil. Hopefully soon.

Not necessarily true. Plenty of great tough midfielders from the past won tackles, hassled, harried, and made short passes to players to carry it on. Unglamorous work but can be effective. At the moment, true, he is still making too many errors and time will tell if he can eradicate those.

Tommy H showed why he's our best player on several occasions last night. 1st half he was the best player on the pitch by a long way. Brattan was a non-factor until the 2nd half when Tom was subbed. Also thought Aspro had a very good game. Gave that extra mile to block shots and didn't show signs he'd been out for a year. It's good to be a little positive again.

Poor passing was a "feature" of Jedi's game, but he went on to EPL and captained Australia.

Usually I’m happy for a Hoole kick but he did put Murray through with a great ball. Fluke. Probably but Murray should have buried it.

Otherwise carry on
