Milligan ban cut to two games

Peter Kogoy | May 10, 2008

OLYROOS defender Mark Milligan has had his five-game ban for missing a training camp reduced to two after apologising to Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek and Olympic coach Graham Arnold.

A contrite Milligan emerged from talks with Verbeek and Arnold at a secret location yesterday. Milligan was unrepresented and met Verbeek and Arnold alone.

The decision now clears the way for Milligan, the Beijing Olympics captain-elect, to rejoin the squad for the upcoming tour of Malaysia, beginning on Tuesday.

The reduced punishment for his failure to turn up on time in Townsville for a training camp last week now means Milligan will miss the Olyroos trial against Adelaide United at Parramatta Stadium on Monday and almost certainly the clash against Croatia, Australia's first-round opponents in the International Cup in Malaysia.

The first chance Milligan will have to play again is if Arnold recalls him to the starting line-up for the second International Cup game against Chile.

At yesterday's meeting, Milligan was given a stern warning about his no-show at the camp.

It is understood the out-of-contract Sydney FC defender had been overseas at the time, trialling with Arsenal.

"I want to stress (yesterday's meeting) was not an appeal hearing," FFA head of corporate affairs Bonita Mersiades said last night.

"It was Mark who picked up the phone and contacted these offices and sought a face-to-face meeting with both Pim Verbeek and Graham Arnold.

"He apologised for his actions and showed a great deal of contrition for his actions.

"In turn Milligan was given a clear message his failure to arrive in camp was not appropriate behaviour.

"The FFA wants to stress both Verbeek and Arnold want to see the young man succeed as a professional footballer."

* Ghana's national soccer coach Claude Le Roy will not renew his contract and is quitting his post later this month.

Le Roy's last game in charge of the Black Stars will be in a friendly against the Socceroos at the Sydney Football Stadium on May 23.

Ghana is due to meet Libya in a 2010 World Cup qualifying match on June 1.

i hear Arengetina have linonel messi  playing for them. seeming he is under 23 he is not an overage player which is quite scary i mean they could bring carlos tevez as well in to the mix as an overage player, i mean whom do you reckon will be the over age people and who will be ours

i agree tevez would be unlikely to be allowed...and tbh they are strong enough in attack regardless...Messi, Aguero and Higuain (bench???). Best attack in comp by far IMO!
Argentina will probs go for experience of riquelme, zanetti and someone else!

hmmm...mouthwatering IMO
---------GK---
-----DEFENCE (4 players)
---Gago---Mascherano----
-------Riquelme-----------
--Higuain-------Messi-----
-------Aguero------------
lovin that...although smething makes me think they will use 4-4-2
but even if they use 4-3-3...they will have strongest midfield and attack in comp easily!

WOOOOO!!!! go our boys.... but dosen't it say matty simon got injured?

No. It means Simon came on for Rukavysta in the 33rd minute because Rukavysta was injured, same way it says Troisi came on for Hearfield in the 68th minute because Hearfield was injured :)

Qantas Under 23s defeat Chile at Intercontinental Cup

The Qantas Under 23s defeated Chile 2-1 last night at the
Intercontinental Cup - Malaysia 2008 last night and in doing so booked
themselves a semi-finals berth at the inaugural tournament.

The Qantas Under 23s began the match well with striker Matt Simon
hitting the crossbar from close range in the 9th minute, but the
Chileans responded by taking over possession and dominating the opening
stanza.

Against the run of play, in the 25th minute, Qantas Under 23 midfielder
Trent McClenahan broke free down the right sideline and placed a deep
cross into the box which was met by Matt Simon, who atoned for his
previous miss, with a well-timed finish to give his team the vital
one-goal lead.

Just before halftime, the Chileans equalised with a spectacular free
kick from 30 metres out which found the top left hand corner of the
Australian goal, giving Tando Velaphi little chance of making a save.

The second half saw the match evenly balanced until the hour mark when
Matt Simon received the ball at the top of the box, beat three defenders
and then provided a deft cross for Ruben Zadkovich to head home and
restore Australia's lead.

The Chileans again fought hard for an equaliser and the Qantas Under 23s
task of holding on for a win was made more difficult in the 75th minute
when Spase Dilevski received a second yellow card and the Australians
were reduced to ten men. With a slight re-organisation of the formation,
the Qantas Under 23s defence held the Chileans out and at the final
whistle held on for a victory that guaranteed them a semi-finals place.

After the match Qantas Under 23s Head Coach Graham Arnold was pleased
with his team's performance.

"This was a great test for us playing a South American team.

"We haven't played this type of opposition during the past 2 years and
they were a good team.

"To come away with a win after having to play with only 10 men for the
last 15 minutes showed that the character of the players tonight was
first class," concluded Arnold.

In the other Group B match earlier in the evening, Croatia defeated Togo
1-0 which put the Africans out of contention to advance to the next
phase of the tournament.

The Qantas Under 23s play Togo in their final group match on Tuesday 20
May (kick-off 10.45pm AEST).

Mark Bridge, Nikolai Topor Stanley, James Troisi and James Holland will
return to Australia today to join the Qantas Socceroos squad in
preparation for this Friday's match against Ghana in Sydney. Dario
Vidosic has joined the Qantas Under 23s in Malaysia and Mark Milligan
will be available for selection having served his suspension.
