Apparently there is a move by the Board (read Turnbull and Conway) to drop the "Central Coast" from the Mariners name as it not good for global branding.

This came up in discussion at the table Gorman was on at the dinner during the FIFA Congress.

Now I know they have to broaden their supporter base, but is it worth it at the expense of their core supporters.

They were admitted to the A League as a regional side, backed by local people, local association and  local businesses. I wonder how Central Coast Tourism, Business Central Coast and both Councils will react to this proposal, not to mention the thousands of Central Coast fans and players.

Its one thing building a brand - completely different abandoning what got them there in the first place.

If we were just to be known as Mariners everyone would think we are a baseball team.

The Seattle Mariners are majority owned by someone with ties to Nintendo, and sign huge Japanese players. Japanese media and fans frequent Mariners games, especially when Ichiro is about to break another batting record. So, I imagine if you were in Japan and said "I support the Mariners", people would assume Seattle. Or of course anywhere in the USA.
Now you might be thinking, well I have an Australian accent, they will surely think of a different "Mariners". Don't hold your breath. There was an Australian that was pretty damn good at baseball that played for the Seattle Mariners for quite a long time. Ryan Rowland-Smith (now with Houston). I think he was from Newcastle.
Funny now that I think of it. Raised in Newcastle, and traveled 7500 miles to play for the Mariners. ;D

Geez ...it must have been some piss-up with Turnbull & Gorman!!

I`ve been to some of those type of dinners & the bs is so thick it couls fertilise "Bluetongue" for years.

However,this thread really shows how desperate we`re getting for some news from the club....but if it keeps the site going I`ll keep reading.
