Mariners V Queensland / Pre Season Cup Round 3

BORN-again goalkeeper Mark Bosnich will have to bide his time on the bench when Central Coast take on Queensland this weekend at Perry Park.

Despite Bosnich's superb performance in the Mariners' 3-0 Pre-Season Cup win over Sydney FC, coach Lawrie McKinna said he was likely to start with Danny Vukovic against Roar.

The psc is a jinx. Nobody has been crowned champions in the same year as winning the psc

We've only been playing for 3 seasons. Its not like we have 100 years of history to compete against!

Until it is proven otherwise it is still a jinx!!!

Absolutely Ridiculous. 3 seasons in not a jinx, The Boston Red Sox not winning a game of baseball against the New York Yankees for 70 years because they traded Babe Ruth to them is a jinx.

Winning the GF is far more of a jinx.

Nobody should ever be OK with losing any game, whether it's against Lightning, Northern Tigers, PSC, whatever. We should be aiming seriously to win the PSC.

The season's 21 games long. They're hardly overworked. No need to rest up for the HAL. Every game should see 1000% commitment to winning it.

The pre-season cup is about getting trying out things and being ready for round 1.If we happen to win it that's fine but it means bugger all if we lose on Aug 15th.

What possible harm can there be in a real cup fixture? Would that not just make the players that much more experienced and steeled for and possible cup fixtures to come, eg finals series, but especially the prelim and final.

i).  It was 86 years
ii).  It was related to them not winning the _World Series_.
iii).  It was a curse, not a jinx

curse, jinx what ever... I wanted to keep it general but if you want to be anal retentive it wasn't the world series, it refered to any play off series against the yankees. But who cares, its f**ken baseball for christ sakes. I was merely trying to give the teddy bear some perspective on what a jinx or curse could actually mean  but thanks for that trivial info I'll be sure to file it under U for Useless

Totally agree, but maybe changing the name from the preseason cup to some thing else would make this silverware appealing to fans, clubs, the media and sponsors. Something similar to the FA cup or Carling Cup in England and leave the trials as trials which they are anyway but it could give the competition some prestige in years to come. Then we would have televised coverage and to get a domestic double or even treble would actually mean something. Just a thought.

Great idea. It might even lift that jinx or curse  :piralaugh:

The FFA will not lift its stauture since the entire idea of the pre-season cup is to have teams playing quality footy come round one. The do not push the PSC because they know that the footy on show is less than perfect.

One day when teams have their own tours, and are better able to draw bigger teams for friendlies in pre-season, the PSC will dissapear, or take on a more competitive edge.

Threadbare Mariners set for Cup final bid

The Central Coast Mariners most threadbare line up of the pre-season will tomorrow depart for Brisbane to contest their final 2008 Pre-Season Cup group match against the Queensland Roar at Perry Park on Sunday.

The Mariners playing stocks have been depleted significantly by injuries, suspension, international duty and non availability, leaving Football Manager Lawrie McKinna with just 14 squad players to choose from for Sundays fixture.

Headlining the Mariners list of absentees is Qantas Socceroo Mile Jedinak, who continues to recover from a groin strain, with long-term injured pair Paul OGrady and Greg Owens joining the season three Mariners Medallist on the sidelines.

Dean Heffernan continues to make progress with his recovery from a knock received in Wellington in the opening round of the Pre-Season Cup but will miss Sundays match as a precaution, while defensive regular Andrew Clark is suspended after receiving his second yellow card of the campaign against Sydney FC last Sunday.

Matt Simon was today bound for Beijing with the Qantas Under 23s as one of four alternate players for this months Olympic Games, while new recruits Pedj Bojic and David DApuzzo will play with their respective NSW Premier League clubs on Sunday.

Positively, Nigel Boogaard, who was an additional alternate player for the Qantas Under 23s for their recently completed pre-Olympic Games tour of Asia, will re-join his team-mates for Sundays match with a view to making his first contribution to the Mariners Pre-Season Cup tilt.

Though the Mariners selection options for Sundays fixture are limited, five of the aforementioned eight non-starters are all but certain to be available for the yellow and navys Hyundai A-League opener against the Newcastle Jets on Friday, 15 August.

However, of most urgent concern for the Mariners is Sundays encounter at Perry Park, where, dependant on Sydney FC recording either a win or draw against the Wellington Phoenix on Saturday, the Mariners will playoff for a place in their third Pre-Season Cup final.

"After we got beat in Wellington we thought that we would get the players through the next few weeks and get ready for the first Hyundai A-League game, but the good result against Sydney has opened things up again," said Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna.

"The possibility of now qualifying for the final puts a nice edge on the game, but itll be a hard game as they always are against Queensland."

Sundays match at Perry Park marks the fourteenth occasion the Mariners will have met the Roar in a competitive fixture.

Although the Roar has only defeated the Mariners on four occasions, they can legitimately claim to be one of the Mariners bogey sides, having only suffered two defeats in such time.

The Mariners and the Roar produced an amazing run of six consecutive draws between October 2005 and October 2006, before the Roar broke the stalemate with a 3-2 triumph over the Mariners at Bluetongue Stadium in December 2006.

Only two Mariners players available for Sundays match have scored goals against the Roar previously Nik Mrdja and Matthew Osman, while Queensland can only call upon four players to have slotted past the Mariners in the past Ben Griffin, Josh McCloughan, Matt McKay and Hyuk-Su Seo.

Interestingly, the only own goal ever scored either for or against the Mariners was scored in a fixture against the Roar, with Tony Vidmar glancing a cross into his own net when the two sides met at Suncorp Stadium in December of last year.

"Queensland will have players missing, the same as we do so no matter what team they put on the park, Frank Farina will want to win the game," said McKinna.

"Seemingly they were the better team against Sydney two weeks ago and seemingly they had a good first half last week.

"Their boys are all fighting for spots in the starting round and its going to be a fierce game and were looking forward to it."

Central Coast Mariners Squad

2. Andre Gumprecht, 5. Bradley Porter, 7. John Hutchinson, 9. Nik Mrdja, 10. Adrian Caceres, 11. Dylan Macallister, 16. Nigel Boogaard, 17. Matthew Osman, 18. Alex Wilkinson, 20. Danny Vukovic (gk), 21. Ahmad Elrich, 22. Sasho Petrovski, 40. Mark Bosnich (gk)

So we're looking at :

---------------Danny
Osman----Boogs-----Wilko-----Porter
Elrich-----Hutch-----Gumps----Caceres
----------Macca----Sash

Bench - Bozza, Mrdja

I'll be glad when Rd 1 comes and fingers crossed we have a full strength team to choose from.

To be fair we're only really missing Heff and Mile from the starting lineup, 2 big game players but that bench looks funny lol no options for Lawrie if we need a change, we'll get tired too against QLD.
