DDS as a marquee?
Wow. Ok.

I love that he's here but a marquee? I reckon we'll cop a fair bit of stick over that

Was just thinking with DDS, Trent, Pain, Hoole, Appiah & Bingham, we have some pace in the side up front add Roux at RB as well

I'm told by my source (who has proven to be very reliable over a couple of other issues) that this is no coincidence. I was told quite some time ago that pace is exactly what Paulo is after, and clearly he has targeted pace in his recruitment.

Given many of our other signings would appear to be 'value' signings I'm a little surprised they aren't putting him under the normal cap - surely he'd fit? Unless the plan is that we're going to be spending more on local talent......Not concerned about it

There's Australian Marquee as well as International. Other clubs have used that with players no more talented than DDS. I'll just be happy he is with us, we will get stick no matter what we do. :)

I think it actually sort of makes sense to be honest... If he can live up to his last go in the league he's an excellent player - even if not quite marquee level.
But when you then consider the rumours that have been floating around about teams targeting him, over the last couple of years, I don't think we had much choice... He won't have come cheap and I'm guessing the pay-off was the multi-year deal which could hopefully net us a bit of profit in the next year-or-two.
I certainly don't see it as something we'll cop any schtick for - he's a rare, attractive proposition to most teams, as an Australian and a quality player.

I would think that he would be an Australian marquee meaning we still have plenty of money to strengthen the squad.
Quite smart.
It's about time we used the rules to our advantage.

DDS must be the number 10, add to that the CB, keeper and striker. If we can fill those positions with quality we are looking good. Would still like Cirio as a striker.

Cirio is not a striker.
He is a talented winger who can sometimes drift out of a game.
Far too small and soft to be played as a lone striker imho

If he's registered as a marquee for three years, it means that we can free up additional space under the cap. That's useful because it means we have one fewer player that we need to split the cap across, raising the potential average salary for cap-bound players.

That space might not even be for this year - a lot of the players we've signed are on one-year deals (Appiah-Kubi, Bingham, Golec, Kennedy, Pearce, J.Rose, Rowles) so there's still significant room to move for following seasons.

If:
  • We have a decent year and build a strong foundation towards 2018/19
  • The FFA finally sorts the new 'operating model', and;
  • A deal is done on the FFA grant that reserves extra money over and above an improved cap...
then DDS outside the cap gives us greater freedom to spend on players inside the cap, or to move his deal inside the cap and replace him with an even better marquee later.

International clearances take a long time at amateur level. The mind boggles at how much bullshit they need to go through for a pro player who's been contracted to one club and loaned to two others but is now set to transfer whilst still retaining some link the the prior club...

Proven goalscorer though Wombat and i'd like to see a striker with that level of skill for a change. Not sure we are building a team that would suit a typical big striker.

All good points. They've been pretty savvy in recruitment so far. I'm happy to trust that there's a very deliberate, strategic choice for him to be marquee.

The Desilva development is interesting;
  1. Its interesting that we would sign a Australian Marquee player based on potential
  2. Based on point 1, It is interesting that we would give him 3 years
  3. Its interesting that overtime only Okon has showed long term confidence in the lad
  4. I think you are right we will get some stick
  5. I don't think he would be secured as a Marquee to save money under the cap, under Charlesworth we never spend the cap so saving money on the cap isn't an issue, I doubt that's likely to change in the short to medium term

Love it, risky but ballsy

Great use of a marquee, we are using it as an investment via hopefully reaching his potential instead of bums in seats but he might have just as much pull as any other marquee we could get.

Also if he gets hurt or isn't up to it Hoole can go to #10 so have some cover that we didn't really have behind Fab. Powell was a striker.

He has great potential and we are getting him at an opportune time.

Now three deal because loves Paolo yet Paolo only here 1 yr. extention time

The Central Coast Mariners are excited to unveil a major signing ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 season with 20-year-old Daniel De Silva signing a contract that will see him remain in Yellow & Navy until at least the end of the 2019/20 season.
Widely regarded as one of Australia’s best young attackers, De Silva arrives on the Central Coast after spending two seasons in the Netherlands where he plied his trade with Roda JC Kerkrade in the Eredivisie. During his time in the Netherlands, De Silva made 15 league appearances for ‘The Miners’.

The Perth born star made headlines in 2013 when he debuted in the Hyundai A-League as a 15-year-old. In 2014 De Silva bagged his first senior professional goal in the Westfield FFA Cup with an extra time strike against Melbourne Victory.

After making 32 Hyundai A-League appearances, De Silva caught the attention of Italian giants, A.S. Roma and departed the Glory at the completion of the 2014/15 season. 2015 was a huge year for De Silva that saw him not only complete a transfer to Europe but also earn a nomination from Italian Newspaper, Tuttosport’s ‘Golden Boy Award’ which recognises Europe’s best under-21-year-old football players.

If 2015 wasn’t big enough for De Silva it was also the year he was called into the Caltex Socceroos squad by Ange Postecoglou after the crafty ‘number 10’ had already represented Australia at all youth levels which included the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup with then Young Socceroos Coach, Paul Okon. De Silva headlined Australia’s group stage match against Colombia during the World Cup by scoring to earn man of match honours.

Playing predominantly as an attacking midfielder in the ‘number 10’ role, De Silva’s arrival on the Central Coast is a huge boost for Okon’s attacking stocks and a significant recruit for the future of the Yellow & Navy.

Upon signing his contract at Central Coast Stadium, De Silva spoke about his excitement of joining the Mariners and re-uniting with Head Coach Paul Okon.

“As soon as I arrived I was very warmly welcomed,” De Silva said. “All the players are great; the staff are great and I have a very good feeling about this club already.

“Paolo gave me so many opportunities as a young player – he took me to the U-20 World Cup. I love the brand of football he plays and instills into the players so that was a big factor for me deciding to come to this club. I’ve worked with him previously and really enjoyed it so I am looking forward to working with him full time this season.

“I want to play as many games this season and give my very best to the club. Every game, every training session. I want to play a part in getting this team into the finals and going as close to winning the league as possible, if not win the league,” De Silva said.

The Central Coast Mariners have a successful history in developing great young attacking midfielders including the likes of Mustafa Amini, Tom Rogic and Anthony Caceres to name a few. De Silva wants to leave his own legacy on the Coast.

“Tom Rogic is the best number 10 for Australia at the moment, he’s a great player,” De Silva said. “The way that this club gives youth a chance and has nurtured that talent is very impressive.

“The type of football that is being implemented here and the philosophy is one of the biggest reasons why I chose to play here so I am looking forward to playing that type of football and I know we will be very dangerous this season.

“Hopefully I can add some attacking flare to the squad, that’s really important when you get to that final third to make assists and score goals – I think that’s what my game is and I look forward to bringing that to the club this season.

Arriving from the Netherlands, De Silva is determined to get back on the pitch as soon as possible and says he learnt a lot during his time in Europe.

“It was a great learning experience,” De Silva said. “It was amazing to play against big clubs like Ajax and PSV Eindhoven but look, I am excited to be back in Australia and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.

“I’d love to be able to play a part for the Mariners in the FFA Cup. Also, October 7 will be fantastic; it will be a big one opening the season with a derby against the Jets, it’s a great stadium, great pitch and the fans are great as well so I am definitely looking forward to it,” De Silva said.

Okon was ecstatic to lure one of his major off-season transfer targets to Central Coast Stadium for the 2017/18 season and beyond.

“We are delighted that Daniel has decided to commit his future to the Central Coast Mariners,” Okon said. “It's been a long time in the making but it’s certainly worth the wait.

“I have worked with Daniel and he is one of the most exciting and talented young Australian players. Our intent has always been to strengthen the squad and Daniel will no doubt give us that quality in the final third that we need.

“We want our supporters turning up excited to watch us play an attacking style of football and Daniel certainly compliments this style,” Okon said.
