Coming off a low base but I can see the improvement. At least now he sometimes remembers he is a defender.

Roy O'Donovan wants new Central Coast Mariners contract in A-League
i

Roy O'Donovan has been in good form for the Central Coast Mariners this season.
In-form Central Coast Mariners striker Roy O'Donovan says the A-League club want him to extend his contract beyond this season.

O'Donovan is yet to commit to the Mariners, but he says he's enjoying playing for the club more than any other point in his time down under.

The striker is one of many finding their feet during the club's resurgence under coach Paul Okon.

The 31-year-old has netted 10 goals this campaign, sitting below only star duo Besart Berisha and Bruno Fornaroli on the scoring charts.

Those goals have helped the Gosford club win three on the spin for the first time in three years; becoming just the fourth side to do so this campaign.

It's a very welcome milestone for the Mariners, who have more recently been associated with record-breaking in the wrong way.

O'Donovan said he felt the club was "on the verge" of something special.

"This club, over the last few years, has made many mistakes on and off the field, and they can't afford to do it again," he said.

"We've got a few things [going for us] right now. We've got a few young players with experience that are kicking on -- they need to be looked after.

"We've got a good manager who [plays] a good style of football, a little bit of identity.

"It's important now that the personnel is right going forward because there's no point taking two steps forward and taking three back next season."

O'Donovan said he felt he owed the A-League minnows after his moment of madness on New Year's Eve 2015, when he headbutted then-Wellington defender Manny Muscat and wore an eight-week suspension as a result.

But he kept mum on whether that meant lengthening his spell at the club into a third year.

"The Mariners have spoken to me. I've had a brief conversation with [chief executive] Shaun [Mielekamp] and Paul and they want me to stay," he said.

"It's kind of silly season, coming to the end of my contract. I'm scoring goals so you're going to have [speculation].

"That conversation hasn't been pushed any further ... but it doesn't affect me -- I'm here to play football and do a job and that won't change whether I'm running out of contract or not."

I hope our feckless owner is dilly dallying over finding the small change in the back of his lounge suite he thinks he will need to resign Royo da Boyo

I don't get why fans get on a high horse and think the CEO and owner don't know it's top priority to retain Roy.

Then sign him. Obvious business needs taking care of.
O'Donovan is happy at the Mariners and living near the beach with his young family, but admits there are other key factors to consider before he would commit to a new contract.

The 31-year-old striker has become a big target for rival clubs after his brace against Western Sydney on Sunday took his tally to 10 goals in 18 games this season.

Asked if it was not just about being paid what he believes he is worth, but also being in a competitive team and having good players around him, the Irish striker told The World Game: "Yeah, that's spot on, you've ticked every box there.

"Every football player, every coach and every supporter wants to win trophies, wants to be competitive, wants to test themselves with and against the best players.

"I'm in my 30s and I want to win some silverware and that doesn't change. I'm ambitious and I hope the club is going to attract the kind of players that are going to bring the Mariners on and then it's an easier conversation to have, you know."

O'Donovan says he's also a big fan of what CEO Shaun Mielekamp and coach Paul Okon are doing with the Mariners.

"Shaun being the CEO on his own this year with Peter Storrie having left, that puts a lot more clarity behind the scenes," he said.

"Paul Okon coming in has been a great signing. He's been our best signing this year because he's a terrific coach. He gets his point across very well to the young squad we have and he has us playing a style and a system that works.

"The younger lads who were last year getting criticised for copping cheap goals and losing games are starting to show the benefits of more experience. We're starting to get clean sheets and pick up results.

"It's definitely heading in the right direction, but there's a little bit more to be done for the club to keep going and get back to where it has been in the past.

"Off the field things are being done the right way now. On the field we definitely need to add a little bit of quality if we're really going to kick on, but at the moment we're playing some good football."

Central Coast have played themselves into the finals reckoning with three straight wins.

Despite his on-going contract negotiations O'Donovan says his focus remains on the pitch and he's left it to his manager, Paddy Dominguez, and Mielekamp to continue discussions.

"It's not something that stresses me out too much, you know," he said.

"I'm happy at the Mariners and enjoying my football and I'm looking forward to us playing Melbourne Victory at Gosford on Sunday.

"I think we're getting there as a team, but things can change very quickly if we don't keep doing our job. Hopefully we get a bumper crowd, because this is a huge game for us."

The line about there being more clarity with SM only doing the CEO work and Storrie no longer being there is interesting. A positive, methinks?

Agreed and an interesting piece of information, basically Shaun is now able to his job how he sees fit not Storie and it gives clarity as to who the boss is

Yeah, get a scribble on a piece of paper and worry about the details later.

Worked well with previous contracts didn't it?

Lets not be deliberately stupid.
Roy is a proven performer. He deserved an upgraded contract.
He is not a Moss state league player or a Tony's cast off bargain.
Lets not let him slip through our fingers.
