Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. Mariners goalkeeper Mark Birighitti has added his name to a prestigious list, claiming the 2020 Mariners Medal sponsored by Collaborative Construction Solutions on Thursday night after a strong debut season in the Yellow & Navy.
The 2020 Mariners Medal dinner was a stark contrast to previous years, presented on a smaller scale at Mingara Recreation Club in compliance with COVID-19 protocols and with only players, club staff and club partners in attendance.
Birighitti arrived from Melbourne City during the off-season last year and quickly established himself as a bona fide number one in Gosford, making a number of stunning saves throughout the campaign including his heroics in the FFA Cup that sent the Mariners into the quarter finals.
The 29-year old made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the competition with 99, and on Thursday night was also recognised by his colleagues as the Player’s Player of the Year and the McDonald’s Fan’s Player of the Year also.
Scottish defender Ziggy Gordon picked up a couple of honours, awarded the Official Supporters Club Player of the Year for his efforts throughout, as well as receiving the Men of Football Damien Brown Medal.
After a big first season at senior level Gianni Stensness was awarded the Yellow & Navy Foundation Newcomer of the Year award, and also took home the Noel Spencer Goal of the Year gong for his bicycle kick effort in Round 21 against Western United.
The Central Coast Mariners Chairman’s Award was presented to Cheyanne Pay, the Club’s event coordinator who assumed the role of COVID Officer during the restart to ensure that Players and Staff could finish the season safely.
The contribution of Volunteers to the Club, which is so valuable to Hyundai A-League matchdays and events was also recognised as Caroline Sutas was awarded the University of Newcastle Volunteer of the Year award.

Interesting letter from MC sent out to members by the Club.
From my reading, it appears he may be looking for partners rather than selling out completely. It also looks like he definitely not going to return the licence.
I suspect the whole exercise was to test the market, and to put pressure on the council over the stadium management and also over the COE.
I do think if there was a realistic purchaser out there he would have sold.
Thinking about it. With the unknowns happening over Covid, broadcast rights, restructuring of the management of the A-League and sponsorship of the League, it is really a funny time to put the Club up for sale. Unless the Club was on the market as a forced sale and going for a bargain basement price I can not see anyone buying in at present unless they have an amazing crystal ball.
With the reduced salary cap, he can probably afford to keep us going for another season or two until these issues are resolved and a serious buyer may be found.
If this is the case I do not see any reason to be pessimistic unless you are expecting silverware. With the reduced cap disrupting other clubs there is no reason for us to be competitive especially if we spend the money no longer going to Oar et al, wisely.
Definitely more interesting times ahead in the classical sense, however I refuse to be pessimistic and join the goo feasters.
If nothing else, we at least have another season of hope and a team on the Coast.

I’m not sure if this is good proactive communication from MC or if there’s some story about the buyer walking away that’s about to break and they’re getting in front of it. I’m expecting the worst but still have my fingers crossed.
