Shearer to become Newcastle boss

Shearer spent a decade at Newcastle before retiring in 2006
Alan Shearer is set to be appointed as Newcastle manager until the end of the season, BBC Sport understands.

The former Magpies striker, 38, has often been linked with a return to St James' Park but in the past has been critical of its management structure.

Shearer would be owner Mike Ashley's fourth managerial appointment this season as the club fights relegation.

Kevin Keegan was replaced by Joe Kinnear, who then had heart surgery, with Chris Hughton taking over as boss.

But with Hughton in temporary charge, Newcastle have slipped into the relegation zone and are currently third from bottom of the Premier League.

Shearer scored 206 goals in 404 appearances during a 10-year playing stint at Newcastle to earn legendary status on Tyneside after joining for a record 15m fee from Blackburn.

The former England striker, who retired from playing in 2006, has made no secret of his desire to become a manager one day.

However, it had been thought that Shearer, who is a pundit on BBC TV's Match of the Day, had been put off returning to St James' Park by the regime of Ashley - which he described as "strange" following Keegan's shock exit.

The same month, Shearer rejected an offer to join the club's coaching staff.

Both on and off the pitch, Newcastle have lurched from one crisis to the next this season following the departure of Keegan early in the campaign.

Following a fans' backlash over Keegan's exit, Ashley raised the possibility of selling the club, before deciding to stay on.

Key striker Michael Owen has been involved in just four games this year because of an ankle injury, while Charles N'Zogbia moved to Wigan in the January transfer window after a high-profile bust-up with Kinnear.

Newcastle, who have 29 points from 30 matches, host third-placed Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday with eight games of the season left.

This is what we need to stay up

WE ARE STAYING UP! WE ARE STAYING UP!

Shearer is one of the best players i have ever seen. His ability to win games and score goals on his own back just show what a legend he truely is.
He is returning home and has black and white blood and will turn newcastle united around into a premiership force.
If you ever saw him as a pundit on BBC you would see his football knowledge and the reason why he will become a successful manager.

NUFC Statement - Alan Shearer

NEWCASTLE United can confirm that Alan Shearer will return to the Club as manager for the final eight games of the season.

The Magpies' all-time record goalscorer takes charge of first team affairs at St. James' Park with immediate effect. Iain Dowie will assist Alan, with Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood continuing in their coaching roles.

The Club have made the appointments while Joe Kinnear continues to recover at home having recently underwent heart surgery.

Managing Director Derek Llambias said: "Everyone at Newcastle United is absolutely delighted that Alan has taken on this challenge.

"Already there is a buzz around the Club and the city. The news has given everyone a massive boost."

Alan will hold his first training session with the squad on Thursday morning before addressing the media at St. James' Park later in the afternoon.

The Club will not be opening the stadium to the public on Thursday.

However, Alan and the squad will stage an 'open' training session for all fans to attend at St. James' Park next Tuesday. More details on this event will follow

I would love to be on the toon right now! Talking to people over there the buzz is amazing. Could be over 50000 people on the steps of St James' waiting for Shearer to address the crowd.

The Club would like to take this opportunity to wish Dennis well for the future.

What a day!!! Life can only get better on the TOON with this guy out!

I just wish Shearer would come down to a couple of Mariners' training sessions and teach Matt Simon how to head a ball...

This could be one of the biggest managerial appointment f**k ups ever.......

Or it could be a stroke of genius!

I think they are banking on the "new manager syndrome" where clubs fortunes are turned around for half a dozen games or so before lapsing back into the crap that got rid of the last bloke.Just because he was a top player and a club legend doesn't mean he's going to be a successful manager.

I wonder how long until they're singing "you don't know wot yer dooin"
