FIFA squashes Vukovic Olympic bid
Posted Fri Jun 27, 2008 10:16pm AEST

Central Coast Mariners goal-keeper Danny Vukovic has lost his latest bid to play at the Beijing Olympics.

FIFA's Appeals Committee has upheld the ruling of its disciplinary committee, that Vukovic's nine-month suspension applies worldwide.

Vukovic had been given an Olympic lifeline when an Australian appeals panel created a window in the suspension period, allowing Vukovic to play in Beijing.

But FIFA says applying the ban to A-league matches only is against the spirit of the game.

. does this also mean that the 'gap period' where FFA recently said that he could play a-league matches is also ruled out? so he can't play at all till the end of the year?

DANNY Vukovic has called time on his battle for Beijing after his appeal was dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Initially, world football governing body FIFA dismissed the Mariners appeal in response to their ruling that made Vukovic ineligible for selection in all international matches up to 5 October, 2008.

Consequently, the Mariners and Vukovic pursued the last possible avenue of appeal by submitting an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

However, late last week, the decision of the Chairman of the FIFA Appeal Committee was confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The full reasoned award of the Court of Arbitration for Sports decision has yet to be issued, but is expected to be issued to all parties concerned before 11 July 2008.

As Vukovics ban from FIFA only applies to international fixtures, Vukovic is now eligible to play for the Mariners in domestic competition until 29 August, 2008, at which point he will commence what is effectively a five-match Hyundai A-League suspension until 5 October, 2008.

"It is with significant disappointment that we close this chapter of our clubs history and accept that Danny is ineligible to compete at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"Our club, in consultation with Danny and our legal team and in line with its major focus on player welfare has exhausted every possible avenue of appeal in order to give Danny the best possible chance of fulfilling his Olympic Games ambition and unfortunately this has not resulted in the desired outcome.

"As we have maintained from day one, we do not condone in any fashion any player making contact with a match official and while we feel that the sanction for this unfortunate incident far exceeds the crime, it is now time to accept the umpires decision and that of FIFA and the Court or Arbitration for Sport and move on.

"There is no doubt that domestically this matter has highlighted some significant areas of improvement in relation to the rules and regulations that address such incidents and it is hoped that future players and the competition as a whole will benefit from this unfortunate saga and the anticipated review of those rules and regulations.

"Now, we as a club and Danny as an individual must move on as we look past the 2008 Olympic Games and to the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season and beyond."

There are often suspensions that start at a certain date in european leagues.

Good news, though unsure if we will start with him in those games, or just let red go. I guess we will see with who they play in the PSC. Id assume thyey will play danny, and try and give them both some game time prior to the league kickoff

We have to consider ourselves lucky here guys, as hard as this is to take, Danny could have gotten a lifetime ban. Not just the 10 months or whatever he has gotten.

The minimum ban as i understand it for striking a match official is 12 months (thats why Danny originally had 9 months with 3 months suspended to make it up to 12 months) the maximum is life- this would be more for those who actually punch a referee and attack him with a weapon. You know the drastic ones

Yeah its crap that he got anything really but i think we just have to consider that it could have been a whole lot worse

I'm just gutted at this final slam of the door  :'(  It will be interesting to read the detailed justification.

We can only hope Danny knows how much we all feel for him and support him. No-one I know who really loves football (no matter what team they support) believes he has been fairly treated.

The blame for this whole debacle must be laid squarely at the feet of FFA : why did they feel it appropriate to give Vukes such a heavy sentence in the first place, completely out of line with FIFA's own recommendations ? I believe they were trying to "make an example" out of him, to try and prove they were "getting tough" on bad behaviour from players.

That is certainly NOT "justice", nor could it be described as "for the good of the game".  In fact, the bad publicity generated in the wider community by this decision, along with the secrecy surrounding FFA's deliberations made Australian football look ridiculous.

The FFA broke a butterfly on a wheel. We can only hope their future decisions are made with greater care and more transparency.

As far as I'm concerned, Danny has a stellar career ahead of him and I look forward to watching him in the years ahead. At the risk of sounding cliched - what doesn't kill you can only make you stronger.

TBH regardless of what anyone thinks about the sentence it's a joke that it's gone on for so long.I mean ffs how many appeals did we have and no doubt a lot of money down the drain or in some lawyers pocket.
After the first appeal we should have left it there and accepted the decision whether we liked it or not.
It's time to get over it .

Live with the decision and everybody get on with their lives I reckon. Enough is enough and it's been appealed to the highest authority so the ban stands. The club should be congratulated for standing by Danny and helping him with the legal assistance and moral support.

and for exposing the weak and unfair tribunal rules of the FFA

this appealing has paved th way for a more just system in the future
