Sydney United and Heidelberg will meet in the round of 16 of the Westfield FFA Cup.
Friday, 11 August 2017 -
Staff Writer
The opening night of the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16 will see the rekindling of a classic old rivalry as two proud former NSL clubs, Sydney United 58 FC and Heidelberg United, take centre stage on Wednesday 23 August as the headline broadcast match on FOX SPORTS.
The two old foes will trigger memories of the old glory days as they battle it out at the Sydney United Sports Centre for a spot in the last eight.

Night one of the Round of 16 will also see a heavyweight Hyundai A-League clash between Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory in front of what is likely to be a full house at Marden Sports Complex, while it will be a ‘Piddick Derby’ in Queensland as brothers Adam and Grae Piddick, the respective bosses at Moreton Bay United and Gold Coast City, attempt to plot the other’s downfall.

The other match on August 23 sees South Melbourne at home again, this time for the visit of the Jamie Harnwell coached Sorrento, who eliminated last year’s semi finalists Canberra Olympic in the Round of 32.

Then on Tuesday 29 August FOX SPORTS will broadcast the tantalising match between 2014 semi finalists Bentleigh Greens and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

Twice Bentleigh have faced Hyundai A-League opposition in the Westfield FFA Cup and on both occasions they have come out on the wrong end of the score line so they will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky when they welcome Tony Popovic’s charges to Kingston Heath.

The rest of the night two action comes from the harbour city as Blacktown City, Bankstown Berries and Hakoah Sydney City East all host matches on what promises to be a bumper night of Cup action.

Lily Homes Stadium will play host to Blacktown City against APIA Leichhardt Tigers, the two teams currently vying for the top spot in PS4 NPL NSW.

At Leichhardt Oval Hakoah Sydney City East are set to add another chapter in their history when they host reigning Cup holders Melbourne City FC, while second division club Bankstown Berries, the remaining Cinderella story in the this year’s competition, prepare to take on the star studded Sydney FC in a dream Cup tie at Sydney United Sports Centre.

As well as broadcasting one match LIVE and exclusive in full on each match night, FOX SPORTS will also LIVE stream and provide updates and crosses of all other matches.

Ticketing information for each of the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Round of 32 matches will be released in due course by each home club. Please visit www.theffacup.com.au/tickets for further details.

Sydney United players celebrate one of their seven goals in the drubbing of FNQ Heat.
Tuesday, 22 August 2017 -
Staff Writers
Wednesday night’s four matches of the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Round of 16 promises something special as some seasoned campaigners and first-timers look to book their place in the last eight of Australia’s nationwide knockout competition.
The FOX SPORTS broadcast match sees two former powerhouses, Sydney United 58 FC and Heidelberg United, reignite an old rivalry at the Sydney United Sports Centre.

The clubs met previously at this stage of the competition back in 2015, with Heidelberg United running out 2-0 winners on that occasion.

Sydney United 58 FC will go into the match against Heidelberg United under the guidance of assistant coach Tomi Vidovic, who has assumed the reins from Mark Rudan.

Having not qualified for their respective PS4 NPL NSW Finals Series, Sydney United 58 FC have been able to put their sole focus on tomorrow night’s Cup tie.

In contrast, Heidelberg United were crowned premiers of the PS4 NPL Victoria competition on Sunday and after eliminating Perth Glory in the Round of 32, will go into the match full of confidence and momentum.

In Adelaide, the boutique surroundings of Marden Sports Complex will host a tantalising encounter between two previous Westfield FFA Cup winners, Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory.

Both sides defeated fellow Hyundai A-League opposition in the Round of 32 and the latest instalment of the ‘Original Rivalry’ looms as another classic. The last time these two teams met in the Westfield FFA Cup it was Melbourne Victory who prevailed in the 2015 Quarter Finals.

There will also be massive interest in the Sunshine State as PS4 NPL clubs Moreton Bay United and Gold Coast City meet in an all-Queensland clash at Albany Creek’s Wolter Park.

The match is being pitted as the ‘Piddick Derby’ as Adam Piddick, the Technical Director of Moreton Bay, comes up against a Gold Coast City side coached by his brother Grae Piddick.

The night’s other match is between South Melbourne and Sorrento, two sides into the Round of 16 for the first time and both sure to be confident they have what it takes to secure a place in the Quarter Finals after narrow hard fought victories in the Round of 32.

Throughout the broadcast of the match between Sydney United 58 FC and Heidelberg United, FOX SPORTS will have LIVE updates and crosses to the other three matches.

The other three matches will also be streamed at https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/ffa-cup/live-stream .

Bentleigh Greens host Western Sydney Wanderers in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night.
Monday, 28 August 2017 -
Staff writer
Tomorrow’s final four matches of the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Round of 16 will have a distinct NSW flavour with six of the eight clubs competing hailing from New South Wales.
The FOX SPORTS broadcast match sees PS4 NPL Victorian club Bentleigh Greens host Western Sydney Wanderers FC from the Hyundai A-League.

There’s also an all PS4 NPL NSW clash with Blacktown City FC going head-to-head with newly crowned premiers APIA Leichhardt in what will be an intriguing affair at Lily Homes Stadium.

Having knocked out MetroStars from South Australia in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32, Bankstown Berries now have the monumental task of taking on the reigning Hyundai A-League Premiers and Champions, Sydney FC.

Across town, PS4 NPL NSW club Hakoah Sydney City East will host last year’s Westfield FFA Cup Winners, Melbourne City FC, at Leichhardt Oval.

Throughout the broadcast of the match between Bentleigh Greens and the Western Sydney Wanderers FC, FOX SPORTS will provide LIVE updates and crosses to the other three matches.

The other three matches will also be streamed at https://www.foxsports.com.au/football/ffa-cup/live-stream.

Thought the Greens played well just lacked the final finish on a number of occasions. Didn't think WSW were great this early in pre season and their Mark Key missed a Pen. LOL

Watch as Central Coast Mariners defender JOSH ROSE conducts the draw for the Westfield FFA Cup quarter finals.
Thursday, 31 August 2017 -
A rematch of last year’s Westfield FFA Cup Final will kick off a huge week of Quarter Finals football in September when Sydney FC hosts Melbourne City FC at Leichhardt Oval.
Graham Arnold’s Sky Blues will challenge Warren Joyce’s City side at the boutique Lilyfield venue on Wednesday 13 September 2017, with the game to be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS.

Melbourne City FC defeated Sydney FC 1-0 in last year’s Westfield FFA Cup decider – Caltex Socceroos star Tim Cahill scoring the only goal of the game in front of nearly 19,000 people at Melbourne’s AAMI Park.

On the same evening PS4 NPL outfit Heidelberg United will take on the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup Champions Adelaide United at Olympic Village in Victoria.

Seven days after the first two Westfield FFA Cup 2017 Semi-Finalists are determined in New South Wales and Victoria, the focus of football fans will shift to Seven Hills in Sydney’s west and Robina in Queensland to find out which other two Clubs will reach the final four.

On Wednesday 20 September 2017 FOX SPORTS will broadcast the all western Sydney stoush between Blacktown City FC and Western Sydney Wanderers FC live from what’s expected to be a heaving Lilys Football Centre.

Blacktown City FC knocked Central Coast Mariners out of the Westfield FFA Cup 2017 in the Round of 32, and Mark Crittenden’s men will have the chance to take another sizeable scalp when they take on the Wanderers – the club that represents their region in the Hyundai A-League.

With the Westfield FFA Cup quarter finals getting underway on Wednesday night with two cracking match-ups, we look at the four sides set for MD 1 and see how they went in their most recent hitouts.
SKY BLUES GROUNDED BY JETS

Sydney FC suffered their first defeat of the Hyundai A-League pre-season, going down 2-1 to Newcastle Jets at Magic Park on Saturday afternoon.

Ex-Sky Blue Dimi Petratos put the Jets ahead in the 12th minute, before Sydney equalised via young striker Charles Lokolingoy – one of ten changes made by Graham Arnold at the break.

But another youngster – teenage substitute Mario Shabow – scored the winner with 20 minutes left to give the Jets a confidence-boosting 2-1 victory.

CITY EDGED OUT BY REDS

Warren Joyce’s side had the weekend off but were beaten in their most recent clash last Tuesday.

Despite take an early lead through Stefan Mauk’s opener, City were run down by Adelaide United, losing 2-1 via goals from George Blackwood and Jordan O’Doherty.

GF HEARTBREAK FOR HEIDELBERG

An extra-time goal from Bentleigh Greens substitute Lampros Honos has seen Heidelberg United beaten 2-1 in the PS4 NPL1 Victorian Grand Final on Sunday.

Greens winger Trent Clulow opened the scoring just before the hour mark, before Heidelberg’s Kenny Athiu equalised from the spot.

But Bentleigh found the crucial winner in extra-time to take the title at Lakeside Stadium.

The defeat means the ‘Bergers missed out on the domestic treble, having won the Premiership and Dockerty Cup earlier in the season.

REDS TOO GOOD FOR CITY

Adelaide United warmed up for their Cup quarter final with a come-from-behind win over Melbourne City behind closed doors last week.

George Blackwood’s penalty and a last-gasp free-kick from Jordan O’Doherty allowed Marco Kurz’s men to come away with an impressive win in Melbourne.

Sydney FC Head Coach Graham Arnold has stated he’s got a better team than his double winning 2016/17 squad, as he prepares for Wednesday’s Westfield FFA Cup Quarter Final at Leichhardt Oval (kick off 7:30pm).
Monday, 11 September 2017 -
@SydneyFC
Sydney FC boss Graham Arnold has declared his Westfield FFA Cup quarter finalists have a stronger team than the one that won the Hyundai A-League double in the 2016/17 Season.
Head here for Sydney FC's official website

Arnold was in a bullish mood on Monday ahead of the Sky Blues Westfield FFA Cup quarter final against Melbourne City at Leichhardt Oval on Wednesday night.

'WE'RE BETTER AND FITTER'

Arnold has retained the core of his Championship winning team for the new campaign and added the likes of Adrian Mierzejewski, Luke Wilkshire, Anthony Kalik and Paulo Retre.

“We’ve got a lot of belief in the squad, there’s a lot of belief amongst that players that we are a greater team than what we were last year,” Arnold said.

“The new signings are fantastic. I believe that we have a greater squad than what we had last season, the new players have settled in very well.

“They’re great people first and foremost, they’re here for the right intentions and that’s to win, they’re going to come and bring us success, and we expect to win on Wednesday night.

“Adrian is very good. He’s exciting, a very good player and not only has he got a strong CV of where he’s come from, but he’s top shelf. When he settles in more, knowing what the other players do on the pitch and the combinations come together it’s exciting.

“For us it’s all about being a greater team than what we were last year and performing greater than what we did. We truly believe that, and the way the players are working, the motivation is extremely high and there’s a lot of belief in the squad that we will do that.

“The boys are extremely fit, it’s scary to think that we’ll be even fitter than last season and how we run over teams in the second half, I can see that happening again. The players are in top shape.”

PUMPED FOR FFA CUP FINAL REMATCH

Wednesday's clash is a repeat of last year's Westfield FFA Cup final, which City won 1-0 thanks to Tim Cahill's goal.

“We’re extremely excited for the game. To play at Leichhardt Oval is pretty unique for our club, at a suburban ground close to our fans in the inner west so we’re expecting a good roll up but also a very good performance," Arnold said.

“We’ve got a lot of depth in the squad, everyone is fit and healthy and everyone is excited for the game.

“We’ll go in to the game expecting to win as normal but at the same time it’s an important pre-season match in a competition that we haven’t won before as a club and we want that trophy as well,” he continued.

“There’s a trophy on the line, we want to win every trophy that’s out there. It’s a great thing for our preseason that we can play meaningful games.

“I was really excited when we got Melbourne City in the draw, we’re looking forward to stepping up our performances. We’ve been performing around 50% status and now we need to step up and we will on Wednesday night.”
