Football NSW
This year's Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 will feature at least three debutantes after Football New South Wales' Round 7 matches threw up some surprises.
APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Bankstown Berries and Hill Brumbies have each reached the Round of 32 for the first time, while Blacktown City FC will join Sydney United 58 FC, who won a straight passage courtesy of winning the PlayStation 4 NPL Final Series last year, as entrants in the alst 32 for a fourth successive year.

APIA Leichhardt qualified after a titanic struggle against PS4 NPL 3 NSW side SD Raiders 2-1 at a packed Lambert Park. The classic encounter took a twist after the SD Raiders took a first half lead via a John Fahmi spot-kick before Michael West scored a last second penalty to send the game into extra time. The game was then destined for penalties before Paul Galimi popped up and scored with the last play of the game that sent the 1,000 plus spectators into raptures.

A chilly Wednesday evening saw the remaining four matches played with Bankstown Berries scoring arguably the upset of the round defeating PS4 NPL side Sydney Olympic 1-0 at the Crest.

Coached by a former Sydney Olympic youth player in Perry Moustakas, the Berries, a division below Olympic, took it to Peter Zorbas’ men and got their just reward in the 78th minute when 23-year-old Jake Bradshaw was the hero of the night scoring the only goal of the match.

Player/Manager Moustakas was proud of his charges and stated that this result and passage to the Round of 32 was one of the biggest achievements the club has experienced in its illustrious history.

“I told the boys before the match that should they win this game it would go down as one of the biggest results in the club’s history, they did just that and created some history of their own after the match thanks to that goal by Jake Bradshaw," said Moustakas.

“I am very delighted for the team as we now await our fate on who we will face in the next round.”

Illawarra Premier League side Bulli FC were outclassed by a quality Blacktown City outfit as Mark Crittenden’s men secured a 3-0 victory at Balls Paddock.

A DOUBLE FROM AN IN-FORM MITCHELL MALLIA as well as a tidy finish by James Andrew confirmed the club’s status yet again amongst the big boys of the Australian game.

In the all PS4 NPL affair at the Illinden Sports Centre, it was Hakoah Sydney City East who reigned supreme knocking out Paul Reid’s men 3-1 after playing fifty minutes with ten men due to an Oliver Green red card.

Gavin Rae’s men got off to a flyer with early goals from Jordan Mundell and Oliver Green with Andre De Jong adding a third in the 52nd minute. The Suns did bang in a consolation goal late in the second half but it was a case of being too little too late as Hakoah Sydney City East qualified for its second ever Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 after the side took part in the inaugural tournament in 2014.

While finally at Russell Reserve at Rouse Hill, newly promoted PS4 NPL 2 outfit Hills Brumbies bamboozled Illawarra Premier League outfit Kemblawarra Dapto Fury FC 5-2 in a huge result for the Hills based club winning its first ever entry to the Round of 32.

It was one way traffic for Dan Sheppard’s men as they took a commanding 4-0 victory prior to the break with goals from Greg Giovenali, Nikolas Dimitriadis, Peter Cejka and Nathan Rayner.

Victor Anymiba added a fifth in the 69th minute before the South Coast visitors added two late goals via Van Elia and Shane Murray however the night belonged to the Hills Brumbies who recorded its finest achievement to date in its club’s history.

The Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 draw will be held at 3pm AEST on Thursday 29 June LIVE on FOXSPORTS.

Knights and Sorrento progress in the west

Football West
Western Australia will have a non PS4 NPL club in the Westfield FFA Cup Final Rounds for the first time following two thrilling Round of 32 deciders.
PS4 NPLWA team Sorrento defeated Dianella White Eagles 1-0, while All Flags State League Division One team Western Knights caused a major upset with a 2-1 win over PS4 NPLWA giants Bayswater City at Finance 365 Stadium.

The Knights are the first WA team outside of the top-tier NPL to reach the FFA Cup Round of 32 draw, which includes Hyundai A-League clubs. The draw will be conducted live on Fox Sports on Thursday, June 29.

Sorrento and the Knights also earned their respective places in the State Cup final, which will be held on July 22.

Knights slay Bayswater in FFA Cup boil over
Bayswater had taken an early lead through Brent Griffiths but Knights’ Adriano Jelenovic levelled before half-time.

A last minute penalty from Knights’ skipper Paul Lloyd won the match, setting off wild celebrations from the visitors.

Knights coach Trim Morgan was proud of his players and delighted with the huge opportunity they faced in the Round of 32.

“It’s a super day for the club,” he said.

“(It’s been) a long time coming but the lads were great today. We’ve worked hard since November and they really deserve all the credit.”

Knights captain Paul Lloyd said the Knights had sensed an opportunity before the game against their more fancied opponents.

“We knew we had a chance; they’ve conceded a few goals in recent games,” he said.

“I thought we were the better team in the first half and the team spirit after the break got us home. It’s probably the best team spirit I’ve been involved with in football.”

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne was bitterly disappointed with his side’s performance.

“When you’ve got five or six passengers out there, it’s difficult to win games and I’ve tried to protect the players for the last month but you have got to draw a line in the sand,” he said.

“That being said, it takes nothing away from the Knights. I thought they were magnificent today but our keeper hasn’t had anything to do in the second half except pick the ball out of the net, so it was a real disappointing day for the club. We’re better than that.”

Canham heads Sorrento to Round of 32
At Percy Doyle Reserve, Sorrento striker Sean Canham’s early headed goal was enough to push his team past a resilient Dianella White Eagles side and reach the Cup final for the second time in three years.

The match at Percy Doyle Reserve started at a lightening pace with neither side allowing their opponent to have much time or space on the ball.

Both sides had a number of chances throughout the high-intensity match, but it was Sorrento who prevailed, holding on for a 1-0 victory.

In Tasmanian FFA Cup news, the 2017 Milan Lakoseljac Cup Final will be on at 4:30pm on Queens Birthday Monday, with the winner qualifying for the FFA cup round of 32.
For those who can't make it (i.e. pretty much all of you), the match will be live-streamed on FFT TV YouTube channel as well as FFT's facebook page. Why slight self-promotion? Well yours truly is usually blabbing some tactical nonsense on the commentary throughout the match.

Tune in if your bored/need something to kill your afternoon on what is our most pointless public holiday.

Who's playing and who's the favourite

It will be Olympia Warriors vs Glenorchy Knights. Traditional rivals, each with 60 years of history. This match would be 'Olympia vs Croatia' if it were the old days.

Hard to say who is favourites. Glenorchy were relegated from NPL Tas 2 years ago but have re-built and have an NPL caliber squad. Olympia are currently 3rd (out of 8) in the NPL so should be the favourites. However, they sacked their coach whilst 1st in the league last month and have since slipped to third, only winning once and being outclassed 6-2 by South Hobart the other week.

It is sort of that situation where if it was a run-of-the-mill league match, you'd tip Olympia but the sentimental favourites will be Knights. The trophy is named after their greatest ever clubman and there is a brand new trophy on offer this year whilst Olympia are also known to splash the cash ala Sydney FC/Chelsea, so it will be interesting.

Love it Tas Mariner this is exactly what the FFA cup needs, local passion and insight. The FFA should ask locals like yourself who know all about the teams and seasons to provide articles on each qualifier and their progression to build the passion. The FFA cup is now one of my off season interests as there are so many great stories. Prediction is it will become massive in Oz football in years to come.

Football Brisbane will commence their first Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary Round matches on 10 February.
Friday, 9 June 2017 -
Football Brisbane
The fight to represent Queensland in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 comes to a thrilling close this weekend, as eight clubs face off in Round 7 of the Queensland Preliminary Rounds.
With one game on Friday night followed by three on a monster Saturday, get up to date on all the teams set to play knockout football.

Catch-up round is with us which means it’s also the last qualifying round of the Westfield FFA Cup with one team from the Flight Centre Premier League and one from the PS4 NPL certain to go to the Round of 32, as well as at least one team which has never been there before (possibly two.)

It’s a huge Friday and Saturday of football which is sure to see big crowds roll up as most of the players down through the leagues have the weekend off.

On with the show...

CLICK HERE for the full story.

Saturday night sees two future league-mates square off in Cairns, as FNQ Heat host Magpies FC at Endeavour Park.

Magpies FC will form one half of Mackay & Whitsundays Magpies Crusaders United, the expansion team that will enter the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland in 2018.

The Southern Regional spot will be decided by a coast-vs-coast duel, as Caloundra FC travel down from the Sunshine Coast to visit Gold Coast City at Duncan McKenna Field.

Gold Coast are flying in the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland this season, sitting top of the table after only one loss in 13 rounds. City were tested against Brisbane City last weekend, but came storming back to record a 3-2 win and maintain their spot in 1st place.

Heavyweight contest set to light up Northern NSW’s final eight

Both sides made it through to the nationwide Round of 32 in 2016, and both were expected to make it through again in 2017.That was until they were drawn against each other in Round 6.
Edgeworth Eagles made history last year in the Westfield FFA Cup when they were the first side from the Northern NSW region to make it through to the round of 16 last year. While, Lambton Jaffas went within inches of making it through their round of 32 match, losing 1-0 in the mud and rain of Devonport.

For one of these sides the FFA Cup dream will end this weekend. Edgeworth and Lambton have been the form sides in the NPL Northern NSW this season and they met just last weekend where Lambton were too good, winning 2-0 in one of the highest quality matches of the season.

Lambton have a side with star-power that could challenge many in the country, with former A-League players Ryan Griffiths, his brother Joel, JLICK obe Wheelhouse and Michael Kantarovski at the club. Not to be outdone, Jaffas keeper Brad Swancott also played on the national scene. Swancott played for the Newcastle Breakers in the now defunct National Soccer League.

While Edgeworth don’t have the same number of notable players, what they do have is a side whose core is almost unchanged from the one which has dominated the PS4 NPL NNSW for the last two seasons.

The Eagles major star is former A-League Golden Boot DANIEL MCBREEN, and alongside Japanese sensation Keigo Moriyasu, Englishman Kieran Sanders and former Brisbane Strikers defender Josh Evans, Edgeworth have a formidable side.

This shapes up to be a real heavyweight battle with Lambton coming in as slight favourites, having beaten Edgeworth twice already in the league this season.

Edgeworth and Lambton will kick-off at 12pm and can be watched live HERE, courtesy of BarTV Sports.

In other round six matches, Broadmeadow Magic – who made the round of 32 in 2014 and 2015 – face the surprise packets of the PS4 NPL NNSW in 2017 in Valentine Phoenix.

The Phoenix were expected by many to finish towards the bottom of the ladder, however after 13 rounds they sit second, with American import Jalon Brown the key man for Valentine.

Broadmeadow are coached by former Socceroo Ruben Zadkovich and have struggled so far in 2017, sitting 7th. With a squad full of quality, they are expected to click soon, and a 4-1 win at the weekend could just prove the perfect tonic for a cup run.

With Valentine focusing on the league and resting some key players, Magic are the favourites to progress here.

This match will kick off at 10am and can be watched live HERE.

Northern NSW giant-killers Cardiff City Tigers meet Coffs City Lions in the 2pm match on Saturday, as the Lions look to be the first side from the North Coast to make round seven of the FFA Cup since Boambee in 2014.

The Tigers are from the third tier of Northern NSW football, and knocked off PS4 NPL side Lake Macquarie in the last round of competition. Meanwhile, Coffs City knocked off Bangalow 3-0 in Lismore.

This shapes as an extremely tight contest and either side could make it through to round seven. It will be live from 2pm HERE.

The final match of round six, will see Maitland Magpies meet Byron Bay Rams. Both sides are in uncharted waters, having never reached this stage of the competition before.

The Magpies have plenty of quality with former Newcastle Jets captain Matt Thompson in the side, alongside former Shrewsbury Town defender Shane Cansdell-Sheriff, and former Central Coast Mariners keeper Matthew Trott.

Midfielder Josh Dutton-Black is in his first year at the club after arriving from the UK, where he had previously played alongside Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott in the Southampton youth academy,

Maitland will meet a familiar face in Joel Wood, who played for the Magpies in 2014 and 2015. After playing for fellow PS4 NPL club Lambton Jaffas last year, Wood moved north to Byron Bay and now plies his trade with the Rams.

Maitland will be red hot favourites to go through in this match, which will be streamed live from 4pm HERE

Thanks Tevor. I think FFA get interested once it gets to the Round of 32 stage but before then, it's up to the locals to do 99% of the promotion. It's one thing social media/internet is good for in getting the message across to people. Hope you can tune in

Magic reach last 32 for third time

Broadmeadow Magic will represent Northern NSW in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 for the third time after defeating Coffs City United 3-1 at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility.
With both teams only having 1 days’ rest, both coaches elected to make changes to their starting line ups which took the park on Saturday for Round 6. Broadmeadow had the better of the first half, controlling large amounts of possession and creating a number of chances which they were unable to convert with the score remaining nil-nil at the break.

With a chance to regroup at half time, Broadmeadow came out for the second half looking to make amends for the missed opportunities in the first half. Shane Paul ensured they wouldn’t have to wait long, picking up the scraps after placing a shot in the bottom right hand corner to give Broadmeadow the lead.

Coffs City refused to drop the heads, hitting back straight away courtesy of Nick Lambert (48’) who volleyed home after a 30 yard strike from Scott Goddard was parried by Magic keeper, Nick Giantsopoulos.

Despite the setback, Broadmeadow took control of the match as Coffs showed signs of tiring after their extra time win over Cardiff City Tigers on Saturday. Magic would restore their lead in the 69th minute with after James Virgili hammered a bouncing ball into the bottom left hand corner after Jon Griffiths drove into the area before cutting the ball back.

Broadmeadow would seal the match in the 87th minute when James Virgili was able to get on the end of a long ball and bundle the ball passed the Coffs keeper, extending the Magic lead.

In the last match of Round 7, Edgeworth Eagles FC(DANIEL McBREEN) take on Maitland FC(MATTHEW TROTT) Tuesday 13th June at 7:00pm, with the venue T.B.A

The winner will join Broadmeadow Magic FC as a representative of Northern NSW Football in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32.

Moreton Bay United will feature in the Westfiield FFA Cup Final Rounds for the first time.
Monday, 12 June 2017 -
Football Queensland and Football Brisbane staff writers
Queensland’s Westfield FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds kicked off in early February as clubs dared to dream of glory on the national stage. Now, only four teams from the Sunshine State's semi professional ranks remain in the hunt.
Moreton Bay United, Peninsula Power, FNQ Heat and Gold Coast City will all feature in the Round of 32 draw, to be held on Thursday 29 June. Read on to find out how they made the cut.

METRO

Brisbane Olympic 2 – 4 Moreton Bay United
Goodwin Park, Brisbane

Brisbane Olympic took to the field at Goodwin Park as strong favourites, thanks to their home advantage and superior PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland form.

Olympic even took a 2-1 lead shortly after the break, but Moreton Bay rattled off the final three goals to secure a famous 4-2 win and their first entry into the Round of 32.

Riley Campbell has scored 11 PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland goals this season and the Jets danger man again played an important role for his side, scoring a brace to lead Moreton Bay to a come-from-behind win.

peninsula-power_18uy6e70d31751egdp3svscvz9.jpg

Grange Thistle 0 – 3 Peninsula Power
Lanham Park, Brisbane

Brisbane’s other qualification spot was decided in a more routine manner as Peninsula Power pulled away from Grange Thistle to win 3-0 and qualify for the Round of 32 for the first time.

The match hung in the balance until Dean Briggs’ beautiful half-volley cracked the deadlock just before the half hour mark.

Briggs scored again early in the second half to further seize control of the match, before Charles Mendy finished a one-on-one chance to put the tie to bed.

CLICK HERE for the full match report.

NORTHERN REGIONAL

FNQ FC Heat 6 – 1 Magpies FC
Endeavour Park, Cairns

FNQ FC Heat have a perfect Round of 32 qualification record, and it never looked like 2017 would be the exception as Chris Sullivan’s double led the home side to a 6-1 win over Magpies FC.

Heat led 3-0 at half-time and continued to bang in the goals in the second 45. Magpies pulled it back to 4-1 with 15 minutes remaining, but a late Heat flurry saw off the danger.

gold-coast-city-fc_am4kvil6zcp219mwyp3y0lgne.jpg

SOUTHERN REGIONAL

Gold Coast City 5 – 1 Caloundra FC
Duncan McKenna Field, Gold Coast

Gold Coast City coach Grae Piddick made history when his side dismissed Caloundra FC 5-1, becoming the first coach to qualify for the Round of 32 three times with one club.

Piddick was not the main story on Sunday night however, as striker Jarrod Kyle stole the show with a barnstorming four-goal effort.

Kyle’s haul adds to the seven he has already scored in the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland, and makes the frontman one of the most in-form forwards in the state.
