I was proud of the effort and thought we deserved at least a draw.
It was also great to see the resurgence of the yellow army again...well done.
The crowd figure was also good and I noticed lots of mums with young kids which was pleasing to see.

Millar had a great first half but needs to back himself by getting into the box.
Pain should be playing right midfield
Pearce isn`t ready for A League
Golec should give up on the big runs
Shabow was energetic and played well, should have been left on
Weemac is past it
Simon played his best game of the season but his passing was woeful
O`Neil was good
Rowles does a lot of good stuff but then buggers it up and gives a goal away

Good effort Bay 16. Jest had more consolidated numbers, but we kept the noise up most of the game.

Good effort from the players- they played reasonably well today and you could tell at f/t from those who came around they were clearly disappointed they couldn't get the result. But-

The club needs to get Patty Z to spend time with Golec if he is going to play the long ball switch across to Millar. You could see what he was trying to do, but just couldn't pull it off.

I'm far from being a football genius, but I could see the switch of tactics from the Jets at half time. We fail to adjust when needed.

I can't see us beating anyone unless we get Tom H, Aspro and a fit and firing Gamerio into the mix.

Pain why did you shoot so early and to the side the keeper had covered?

Couple more dribbles and near post was open. Cost us the game that moment

Yep killed me. He made the moment and otherwise had another good game. So it’s hard to hold it against him. But it was the moment that wins us the game and changes everything.

Do you expect him to get serious minutes and if so at who’s expense? At this point I am struggling to see Simon being dropped and that goal will only cement his spot for longer.

He like being associated as a footballer more than he likes playing football.
Doubt we'll see any serious football from him.
Still no idea why we waste money or a squad spot on him.
Same agent as the coach maybe?

I’m assuming we got him pretty cheap otherwise we’re idiots. That fills a spot and saves cap space/budget which we should have been able to direct to our starting XI. We’ve got other attackers we’ve barely seen so I don’t know how much I buy him being injured costing us anything.

Today’s performance didn’t change my opinion on MM. I still don’t see it and feel like we’re relying on stealing a win rather than making regular chances. Some (most?) of the best paid strikers in the world don’t have the hit rate we’d need to take wins with our limited genuine chances and people want to put that on someone like Pain? That’s not fair.

My suspicion is at HT Mulvey told everyone to calm it down, take a breath and play smart.

At least that’s what we looked like we tried to do.

If so, huge mistake imho.

They needed to fight there way back in to the game and we should have risked a second yellow to continue the level of fight we’d shown and keep the game a derby.

Instead we let them turn it back into a game of football and they found their rhythm, then their greater individual quality started to show through and they got on top of us.

Weemac played a good 60 minutes and put in a genuine shift, but then he was done. Hoole struggled in attack and while battled hard he’s not a talented defender. Throw in a tiring Shabow and Oneil and they started getting the time and space in the middle that they’d previously lacked and we were in shit. Mulvey either missed this imo or failed to adequately respond.

If he’d subbed Melling and Murray in earlier and told them to really get amongst it with the goal to keep the intensity right up we would have had a much better chance at holding a one nil lead, and maybe would have got a scummer sent.

But instead intensity drops and they’re running through all the tine instead and so we start doing lots of stupid fouls in dangerous areas because we can’t cope.

Our movement off the ball is still badly lacking. Ridiculous that only Millar, Shabow and Pain make proper runs.

Bottom line though... you can’t be bringing 2 x NPL players off the bench and Jacob Melling as your depth and expect to win many second half battles imho.

Not meaning to criticise Murray or McDonald, but they need more time.

Also appreciate it’s easy to be an armchair coach.

Plaudits to the boys for playing the first 45 like a true derby and to Matty for really leading from the front and Millar for a standout first half. 4 more of him please mike.

Millar seemed to tire in the second half and when he cut in he got lost and didn’t know what to do or couldn’t use his left foot.
He also stopped taking them on in the second which I think was fatigue but he is doing well considering was playing NPL.

Sadly, we have players who just are not AL standard. Even worse, at full time some couldnt get away fast enough

Hoole (serial offender) and O'Neill (who has previous) dogged the fans. The players who care apologised and were gutted but while the club allow dog shit like Hoole and his mates to be a cancer at our club, very little will change.

I heard you mouthing off at Hoole at the end. His attitude last season and this season has been shit.

I suspect O'Neil was on his way to hospital. You obviously missed his injury.

Well that was tough to take, while I am not as emotionally connected to this derby as most, it was very painful to lose that one. Especially when you could see it coming for the entire second half. I was impressed by the spirit we showed for portions of the game, where has that been this season? But I felt even that spirit and enthusiasm went missing at times, there were simple pressure acts that we didn't always perform, simple passes that we missed and a simple lack of defensive structure at key moments.

My thoughts on our players:

Adam Pearce:
While he is clearly not ready for the A-League and could have done much more for Jets' second goal and on the Jets' set pieces in general, I thought he probably had his best match for us. His attempted save at the first goal was horrific, it should have been relatively easy to deal with. He needs to command his box better and be far cleaner when catching the ball but you could at least see the potential he has today. Even if Kennedy is able to play next week I would pick Pearce over him, though if Munford and Gauci are anywhere near A-League level they deserve an opportunity.

Matt Millar:
Was by far our best player though he did fade in the second half. His marauding runs were a highlight of the first half and I can't remember a more pinpoint cross in my time as a Mariners' then the one he managed for his assist.
He combined well with Andrew Hoole down the right hand side and played through some very clever and well weighted balls. While his defensive aerial abilities are nothing to write home about, he allowed a free header for Hoffman for the first goal as well as giving away a free header to Jair earlier in the match, he fought for every ball and was rarely beaten in one on ones. He was culpable for the second goal when he was clearly out on his feet and forced Rowles to be dragged out of position. Should be given an opportunity further up the pitch as he is clearly a right winger playing right full back.

Antony Golec:
He was peripheral for most of the game, when not giving away all the ball. He appears to be slowly getting back to the player he was before his injury but a full recovery seems like it will take a long time. His attempted cross field balls were encouraging, and we desperately need to add width when coming out from defence, but his execution was poor. As a senior player in our side he needed to galvanize and marshal our defence, and for the majority of the match there was far too much space between him and Rowles. While this problem partly comes from poor screening from O'Neill/McGlinchey/Melling throughout the game we need to stay far more compact and as the senior player in defence Golec needed to ensure that happened.

Kye Rowles:
Has the makings of a fantastic defender, and in the right environment I think he really could flourish into at the, very least, into an above average A-League player. He has very much proved me wrong from his initial impressions for Brisbane Roar. He consistently makes good interceptions and tackles but often lacks the ability to recover when dragged out of position, with the right experience and structure around him he is one player we could build a team around.

Jack Clisby:
Constantly beaten one and one and allowed cross after cross after cross to be delivered to Newcastle's strikers. Why is he on set piece duty? He did not successfully execute a set piece today and barely has all season. Had his worst performance in a Mariners' shirt to date.

Michael McGlinchey:
Improved on his performance on last week and was positive in possession but was nowhere near the standard required of an A-League visa player. He is not a defensive midfielder and does not know how to tackle, the only positive in keeping him in that position is that it stops Melling from starting. On the ball his first half was good, he was positive and made some good combinations but frankly I except better from a foreign player.

Aidan O'Neill:
Put in a tremendous defensive shift in the first half and successfully screened our back four for the first time this season. Moved the ball quickly and hit the target even with ambitious balls. Sad to see he him go off in the second half but made next to impact in the second half prior to his injury.

Jacob Melling:
Surely McGing was a better option to come off the bench for a tiring Millar? Made no impact on the game albeit with limited minutes.

Mario Shabow:
Was direct, positive and eager to combine with other players. While his decision making could use some work at times he offered more in the 10 role than anyone else has this season. Worked tremendously hard off the ball to create options and deserves to keep his place next week. Needed to be subbed earlier to take control of the midfield.

Josh Macdonald:
Had limited impact but limited opportunities on the ball, came on far too late and did not work as hard as Pain did.

Jordan Murray:
Was far more successful playing centrally last week against Wellington than wide today. Thought he was hard done by to lose his starting spot and if he comes off the bench he needs to be playing as an actual striker.

Andrew Hoole:
Was comprehensively beaten by Georgievski today but worked hard on and off the ball. Was put through into dangerous crossing positions by Millar numerous times only to be unable to cross past Georgievski but did well to offer an option and create space for Millar to run into.

Matt Simon:
Fought hard for the ball as he always does and probably had his best game since returning to the Mariners. Combined well with Shabow and produced a quality headed finish. He needs to offer more off the ball when we have possession, he is far too often static and looking for an unneeded aerial contest.

Connor Pain:
Worked exceptionally hard with and without the ball but had two fantastic opportunities which he spurned. Hard to come down on him after he has been close to being our best player this season but as a now senior player he has to finish at least one of those chances.

Mike Mulvey:
We wanted it more than Newcastle in the first half and it showed, we looked like an A-League standard team who were proud to be professional footballers in the first half. Throughout the match our central defenders allowed too much space between them and their fullbacks. Shabow was a brave selection choice which paid off, but where is Hiariej? Our substitutions were late, why did we wait until the 67th minute to make our first sub when we were quickly losing control of the match. We completely failed to deal with fatigue and adjust to a small alteration to Newcastle's game plan.

The performance was better today and I at least don' feel embarrassed to be a Mariners' fan because of it, we are still off to the worst start in A-League history. There certainly were positives to take out of this match, the opportunities we created as well as the performance of Shabow and Millar, we still gave away far, far too many chances that any other A-League side will comprehensively punish us for. Newcastle came without their shooting boots today and even with a much improved defence we continued to give away chances. Without a huge amount of luck I can at best see us at best getting two wins out of this season.

Classic mariners - just enough to give us hope before reality comes crashing in.

Last week MM said he was about giving youth a go and then starts 2 of our 3 oldest players :-| Simon did well with the goal but I still wonder about the opportunity cost of starting him. It feels like we need to shoehorn them in at the cost of proper change.

Newcastle looked more likely to score and had more decent chances so I’d say the result was fair.

Lastly I dropped in to bay 16 in the second half while we were still 1-0 up. I know one of the guys that’s been trying to take up the mantle so I thought I’d lend my voice. It was a depressing experience with the guys up front left hanging and often a group at the back just doing their own (Quite negative) thing. I don’t know who’s who and haven’t earned my say but perhaps the people in that bay need to have a good think about what they want to happen in future. I’ve done the leadership when no one else wants it thing for other clubs (non football) and it gets old super fast. Most people don’t want to put their hand up that’s understandable but help the guys out.
The was a bloke in front of me in bay 16 cheering when Newcastle scored both goals, zero consequence or reaction. Wasn’t even wearing a mariners jersey. Could you imagine trying that in the RBB, jets away bays or the cove?

Meh.

The kids did a great job but the old hard heads at the back also did a great job.
I didn't see any twat celebrating a Scum goal.....if you did...why didn't you pull him up?

Contemplated lobbing the remains of my beer for a moment but I didnt need the drama or beating. Maybe most people missed it but I was pretty shocked to see it happen.

The guys up the back definitely brought the noise to keep things going it just felt super awkward when some things fell flat. I get the reasons behind the negative stuff but when it takes off more than most chants it’s a shame. There were people a row or two away from the megaphone not even acknowledging the guys trying and it kills me to see that kind of thing when people are putting themselves out there.

Overall I felt like this game probably showed the most promise we've had all season. Thing is, almost a third of the way through the season is way too late to show a hint of something you can build upon.
But, better late than never I guess.....

There wasn't anything spectacular about us, we were just getting it done. Though we still have issues with the errors - Pain's 1on1, need to do much better than that. Their 2nd goal....the goalkeeping and Hoole's 'defence' on the post were utterly inexcusable.

And yet again, that's what the game comes down to. An inexcusable mistake. And probably an offside goal (again).

Even the first goal...well done by them, but our defenders are way too susceptible to players getting on the inside of the shoulder. Again, what's the coaching team doing?

We're the most unfit team in the comp. The fact that we've gone most of the season without a fitness coach is probably the single biggest failing we've seen from the football department, ever. We'll never recover from that this season. We'll ALWAYS be behind everybody else. That's why, when we lost a player (how the f*** wasn't that a card?), we were utterly stuffed. Normally everybody realises they need to lift and put in 110% when a team loses a player (that's why I don't think having a player sent off is often a disadvantage...but I digress). We didn't. And probably because there was no more in the tank. We needed to lift a gear when we were already running on fumes - and by that point, the stench of an impending defeat is in the ear. After their first goal, we all know the 2nd was coming. And I reckon so did the players.

I'm not sure if it's the fact that I'm genuinely beyond caring anymore, or if maybe I'm left with some optimism....

That and, hey, at least the Nix only beat us 2-0, not 4-1!

The first half was entertaining though, everything the derby should be. Simon was every bit the captain in those petty little mass confrontations - and that was a really good goal (and not an easy finish for Simon either)

Contemplated lobbing the remains of my beer for a moment but I didnt need the drama or beating. Maybe most people missed it but I was pretty shocked to see it happen.

Well at least you couldn't hear any of it (good or bad) on TV.......

I liked the 'days without a win' banner.

Maybe that's needed in the changerooms....

Backtracking so hard over the resilience comment he kept falling over himself....

ONE GREAT SAVE FROM A FREE KICK BUT APART FROM THAT NOT GREAT.

BETTER THAN CISSE?

POSITIVE GAME BUT FAR FROM DOMINANT.

NOT IMPRESSED ME YET.

WORKED HARD AND A NICE GOAL. THE SUPPORT AROUND HIM WAS NON EXISTENT.

GOOD GAME BUT WTF WAS THAT SHOT!!!????

IT WAS MUCH BETTER TODAY BUT WE PLAYED A POOR TEAM.

RB was solved but Keeper wasn't.
Effort was decent.
Fight was good.
Off the ball movement remains very poor.
Getting numbers into the box when we attack is just is not happening.
