Round 1 2018/19 v Brisbane Roar

That Melling overhit summed it up: Nice idea, bad execution - Ross would have been in on goal.

Funnily enough our worrying defenders stood up, it was probably our midfield that really needs a kick in the bum.

Still i'll take a point.

Understand Mulvey isn't about playing a possession-based game, but 40-60 possession is not a great stat. Need to control the ball a little more than we did. Spent far too long pinned in the back third.

One word to describe our performance - Clunky
Would have lost 6-1 against a competent team.
MM needs to sort out our midfield - our defence is still way too leaky to keep facing the ball, felt like most of the game was spent in our own PA - our mids need to stop the ball getting to the backs.

Showed good potential, our attack should click in time. Really like this Matt Simon, showing a lot of maturity, lot of mongrel, what I like to see and what we need from the captain. A few unnecessary cards which will hurt us later in the season, I'm sure. McCormack was disappointing.

Golec, I said last season that he does a lot of good but is prone to watching seagulles at important moments and lets in a lot of goals that way. Nothing had changed.

Clisby did well (except for stopping to raise his arm instead of putting in the desperate tackle).

Overall I'm happy enough, but Taggart flattered us.

Not sure I agree, I thought our defenders looked like strangers in the night at times, especially Cisse and Golec. We will need to improve greatly in that respect.

Very proud of our team. We have a lot to do in the middle of the park but the team had "guts and determination" I am sure that we can improve as most of this team need to gel.
Bring on next week!

finally retired

have to disagree (at least with Rowles)....apart from the last few minutes I thought he was caught out of position soooooo many times. I don't think it was a good experiment having a leftie in the right back position.

Rowles has a solid game personally but teams will be likely to target him on his weaker side in future games. That said, I thought he put in a decent performance.

There was a post a few items before saying how well our defence played. Yes our last ditch tackling was effective, it was the structural side of things that caused me concern.

It was a game of football.
Brisbane’s ball movement by far the most impressive round 1 .
Happy with our desperation defending .......... but not happy we had to so many times.
Taggart robbed brisbane of the win and we were lucky it was us.
Rowles had more good moments than bad. McC got no service.
Happy with mm’s tactics.
Happy we are not spoon material............ so far.

As I said during the week, happy with a draw in Brisbane.
Cisse and Golec were excellent, saved us constantly with smart and desperate defending.
Clisby was solid enough.
I didn’t like Rowles’ first half or the fact he was RB, but he composed himself and did very very well defensively in the 2nd.

Keeping the ball might not have been the game plan but we 100% have the players to be better with ball.
Ross was obviously told to do no defensive work and it hurt us. But he had good moments.
Tommy oar was mostly quiet unfortunately, but Hingert made me eat my words he constantly gave Oar no time.

O’Neil changed the tide for us and we’ll be so much better with him starting.

We were lucky they couldn’t score in a you know what but they also played very well otherwise, so happy with a draw.

I thought he closed down play solidly for most of the match. Shepherded well without over-committing. And got better as the game progressed. A rare time I agreed with Harper! :)
