In fairness how many games has our keeper lost us? Would Kennedy raise that number? I don't think he will be first choice. He'll be afforded the chance to be first choice but that will be up to him and whoever it is he's fighting for a spot

Last year our keeper cost us 5or 6 games.
When we had a good keeper (Reddy) he probably saved us 3 or 4 games a season. Our defence in below state league level so it is imperative that we have a quality keeper.

The way I look at Kennedy he is better than what we have and probably the obvious available keeper. At this stage he would be first choice. By the time we start next season he needs to be second choice.

That is the way I feel about a lot of our squad that have contracts for next season. Most, if not all should be second XI players. Some of them may turn into very good players, but it is not fair on the players, or the fans for that matter, to expect them all to mature together. There needs to be the right older players with them. Something we have suffered with since Arnie left and the Championship side was dismantled.
Yeah. Imagine if Trent had a Sterj type player to learn how to be a wide player. Or any of our backs had Zwanny or Wilko to play next to. I could go on and on. That champion side was a great balance. The youth just happened to be outstanding but that was also a credit to the players around them and the coaching staff.
f**k a lot rests on Okons recruitment as to whether his time here is a success or failure.
FFS Charlesworth give him some cash or find someone who will. Just try it. Just for a year. We've close to had enough of good performances without sustained results

. i am well behind on my reading and haven't read all of this thread ... but i have now read the last few pages

. there was some discussion a few pages back about us spending the cap next season and that SM and MC have both committed to it - i have probably heard most of what they have had to say and i don't remember them saying that

. what they always say is it depends on the grant. us spending the cap is reliant on us receiving more than the cap ... and that seems far from certain

. they have also said that Okon will have a lot more to spend next year - this could also be technically true and bullshit at the same time. this is because Okon had practically nothing to spend this year with money already spent ... so of course he will have more to spend (considering the number of players off contract), it doesn't necessarily mean we will have more to spend

. unfortunately reading between the lines is necessary in our situation

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
if anyone thinks Pikey Mikey is suddenly going to become overtly generous and lets the moths out , their a bit mad....Oks might get a smidge more but nothing like he would like I reckon

Central Coast Mariners players coming off contract: Jake Adelson, Kwabena Appiah, Josh Bingham, Jacques Faty (foreign), Fabio Ferreira (foreign), Scott Galloway, Paul Izzo, Nick Montgomery (foreign), Ivan Necevski, Michael Neill, Roy O'Donovan (foreign), Jacob Poscoliero, Storm Roux, Mickael Tavares (foreign)

Faty and Tav gone.
Roy rumoured to scum.
Fab rumoured to WSW.
No word on Monty however given he is now an aussie it would make him more attractive for other A league clubs. I have heard that he has a coaching gig lined up locally in 18/19 and would be happy with a one year deal. He would be on good coin, would he be willing to take much of a haircut to stay? Is a 1 year superannuation deal in Asia an option?
I would guess that those above 5 would be close to half our cap spend. Roy and Fab have scored over half our goals this season, we would need to get pretty good replacements.

regardless of increased spending, with the money freed up by faty and tavaras its gunna feel like adding half a million bucks worth of value to the team

Link to the Herald Sun article re off contract players.
Locally you would think he could target those players he has worked with in the past with FFA however from that list there is nothing special - Mells, Makarounas, Warland, Kuzmanovski, Oxborrow, Blackwood, Baccus, Woodcock, Shabow, Youlley.
There are a few young aussie players now overseas he would be aware of.
You would have to wonder what Okon's scouting network is like overseas in terms of established or name players.

Faty, Tavares and Ferreira can definitely go, will be very disheartened if Roy goes and would love to keep him but if he does go I think we can replace and probably with someone who fits Paolo's game plan a bit better. Roy is a terrific striker but not the best fit in the type of style Paolo wants to play.

I'd like George Blackwood.

On 442 about Bona to WSW a nix fan said and Hamish Watson to CCM. Obviously has no links or connection or what ever but maybe nix fans think that is a possibility. Nothing about it on nix forum.

Would be another nothing signing. Rather Bingham.

Would he even be a non visa player? Looking at his Wikipedia page there is no mention of him having Australian heritage. In the few games I have seen him in he looks far, far too slow for A-League level Bingham looks a much better prospect and one who doesn't require the use of a visa spot. He wasn't good enough for the Conference ffs. If we're desperate for a young striker go after Charles Lokolingoy, Abraham Majok, Eli Babalj, George Blackwood, Kenny Athieu, a player from the AIS or someone returning from an academy in Europe. If we sign Hamish Watson we are more than stuffed.

Past it imo.
When he's fit I think he could be a decent stop gap measure for us, especially if we could snag him for 80,000-100,000. If we could secure a decent foreign number 10 we could use him in spurts. But from the sounds of it his ankle is giving him a lot of trouble and we have a very poor track record with injury management. Probably better off not taking the risk. Wouldn't mind using the same amount to grab Panni Nikas as an option for a potential number 10 backup.

Signing News: Star defender re-signs with Mariners
New Zealand international defender Storm Roux has committed his future to Central Coast Mariners, signing a contract extension that will keep him in Gosford until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 Season.
Roux was off contract at the end of this season but extended for an additional two seasons under coach Paul Okon.

Roux arrived at the Mariners in 2013 and immediately worked his way into Graham Arnold’s starting side, making 25 appearances in his first season on the Central Coast where the Mariners finished third.

The 2013/14 season was Roux’s breakout campaign and his impressive performances resulted in a nomination for Hyundai A-League Young Footballer of the Year, selection for the New Zealand national team, and a call up to the Hyundai A-League All Stars side that played Juventus in 2014.

Since debuting for the club, Roux has grown from strength-to-strength and has been one of the first names on the Mariners’ team sheet thanks to his rock-solid nature in defence and danger in attack on the right wing.

During the 2016/17 pre-season, Roux completed a miraculous recovery from a triple injury that he sustained in February 2016 in time to walk out against Perth Glory in Hyundai A-League round one and has not looked back since.

“To be able to extend my contract here at the Mariners means a lot,” Roux said.

“This club gave me my chance in professional football at 20-years-old and I was thrown right into the starting team which was massive for me.

“For the past four years, I’ve played a lot of games for this club and to captain a couple of games for the Mariners when Monty has been out is a huge honour – this is very special and I just want to see this club get back to where it should be which is fighting for a top six finish.

“I think I took the first season for granted and thought that every season would be like that – then obviously we haven’t had it since and I’m desperate to get back to finals football, I miss it a lot and it’s something I want to be a part of next season,” Roux said.

The appointment of Paul Okon played a big part in Roux’s decision to re-sign.

“Paolo has come in this season and given our team direction and he’s a coach that I want to play for,” Roux said.

“Paolo will have a full pre-season under his belt, bring in the players he wants and we will compete.

“All the boys in this team feel as though we are building towards something, Paolo is a great coach with a great history as a player so he’s certainly taught me a lot as a player this season.

“Heading into the season I didn’t see myself as a captain of this side but Paolo has shown a lot of faith in me, he’s given me the armband in Monty’s absence and Monty has helped me with leadership qualities so it’s something that I can take on board and build on but I feel like every time I put that armband on I get more used to it – it feels good,” Roux said.

Speaking about the signing news, Okon said: “Storm has been at the club for a number of years now so he understands the club culture and values.

“Even at a young age he’s quite experienced having already played finals football with the Mariners.

“Storm has been an important member of the Mariners since he’s arrival at the club and he has shown enormous determination after his injury – a real desire to get back and put that Mariners jersey on.

“Moving forward the club sees Storm as an important member of the team and the expectations are high because he’s had this year coming back from an injury but next season we’re confident Storm Roux will have a bigger and better season.

“We want to play attacking football and to do that you need fullbacks to attack and Storm gives us that. He’s a big part of our plans for the future, he’s a New Zealand international and we would love for him to break back into that New Zealand team as a result of the Mariners doing well,” Okon said.
