Table Finish: 10th only because there`s no 11th
Golden Boot: Powell
Most Yellows: Monty, although I think Faty may get a few too
Most Reds: Posco
How long will TW last: Probably longer than me
New Fan Favourite: Powell.

After the GG game it`s hard to get enthusiastic.
As a veteran coach, I`d have put my best team on the park to start with, this player unfit stuff is just bullshit.
If they haven`t reached a decent level yet then sack the fitness guy.

Poor preseason, poor FFA Cup, poor draw = poor memberships & crowd attendences.
I`ve been reluctant to sack coaches mid season (Casey De Bruin being the exception) but Walmsley has to be put on notice.
At this stage I can`t see him being any better than Moss

Montgomery believes if Mariners 'buy in' they can be competitive

Central Coast Mariners captain Nick Montgomery said new coach Paul Okon wanted to change the team's playing style and that the players must "buy in" for the club to be able to move on from the horrors of last season.

"He's younger than coaches we've previously had and he wants to play passing football and possession football, so he's got his own ideas and I'm sure he's taken some of that from the good managers he has played under himself," Montgomery told The World Game.

Central Coast dropped alarmingly last season, finishing a distant last in the 10-team competition with just 13 points, including three wins, four draws and 20 losses. They scored a measly 33 goals in their 27 games and conceded a massive 70.

But the Mariners have managed to recruit more experience into what was a side carrying a lot of inexperienced young players, with Connor Pain, Mickael Tavares, Jacques Faty, Blake Powell and Ivan Necevski all coming on-board.

Montgomery said under the circumstances, Central Coast could not afford to play to anything less than their full potential this season.

"There's obviously a massive gap in terms of the financials between your Melbourne City's, Melbourne Victory's and Sydney FC's compared to the Mariners," he said.

"We've had to cut right back as a club in the last couple of years, which makes it more difficult, but that just means the squad you're working with has really got to get everyone buying in to what you're doing and working hard for each other and working hard for the team.

"Because it's not just those other teams, you're going to come up against teams like Wellington as well - you can throw them into the mix because they're spending a lot of money in that front third.

"All those teams have marquee players on good money and playing in that final third, which is why they're scoring goals, so it does make it difficult. But Paul has come in knowing that it's a challenge.

"He knows how he wants us to play and we know that if we can adjust to this style of football quickly there's no doubt we can compete - and hopefully compete well against these teams that have got all the money.

"We've trained hard in the last few weeks, since Paul came. We've done a lot of sessions and we're getting the benefit of that and I believe we can push on from here.

"I'm not saying we expect to go on and win the league this season, but we've definitely got to improve on last season and I'm confident that under Paul and with this style of football, that's possible.

"The minimum expectation is to make that top six and I'm confident that if we can adjust to the new playing style, and defensively be a lot better than we were last season, then there's every chance we can make that top six.

"And from there, anything's possible."

The Mariners were looking to step up their preparation for the new season in a trial game against Wellington Phoenix at Knox Grammar School in Sydney on Saturday.

"It's disappointing we didn't get the chance to put things into practice last week," Montgomery said.

"We flew to Brisbane to play our first proper game under the new coach and the game was cancelled due to flash flooding, so it was rather frustrating.

"Last season was tough. We had a lot of kids who had not really had any experience in professional football and that wasn't ideal in a tough league like the A-league.

"There's no way we can have another season like last year and lose as many games as we did, but we've got a number of new recruits who have all got experience in the A-League and that's important.

"They've all settled in really well and are enjoying life on the coast and enjoying the Mariners as a club, because it's a great set-up here and even though it's small it has had a lot of success in the past.

"There's an opportunity for any player to come in here and get regular football that they maybe didn't get at the big clubs and we're looking forward to our new players being really good for us."

I just re-read this & thought it was appropriate to revise it.

Table finish: 7th
Golden Boot: Powell just ahead of Roy O
Most Yellows: Monty, he just want the ball. Then Faty...
Reds: Faty , Posco may mature a bit this season whereas Faty will be looking for a rest at times.
I`m ready to give Okon a go but I think it`ll takes a few seasons. a rise to maybe 7th this season then with a few personell changes into the 6 the following season
Fan Favourite: I`m expecting big things from Powell but I also hope Pain grows in stature as the season progresses.

I'm not emotionally prepared for the season. I know we have recruited to plug some of the gaps from last season, but our roster still worries me.

Capt.....i havent seen them in the flesh like a pre-season under Moss but i've seen a stream v Scum and some highlights............and i'm way happier.
Tony looked switched on compared to Moss.......Paul looks like the real deal.....results will tell us but I think we will be far better than last year.

Also, I think if things aren't working they way Okon has/d hoped for in the first 3-4 games, then he will definitely be 'reactionary', either minute by minute or game by game
- as opposed to Walmsley, who appeared for all intents & purposes to just sit there & spectate the 'car crash' as it unfolded.

I do agree with both of those points and Okon seems like he has certain stepped in to take charge. Coming into somebody else's playing roster is a tough gig, no doubt.

Tony was a decent judge of a player but is setting out of a side was flawed. Its a better roster than he took over.

I keep a table that looks at potential points. It shows that halfway through the season we are 5 points off being 5th. Paul made the point after the first 4 games that we had had decisions that had cost us 5 points in the first 4 rounds. My point is not that we should be 5th - because as everyone knows these things even themselves out over the course of the season :tinfoilhat:. No - the point is that Okon has made us competitive and if we go against type and strengthen in January we can be more competitive. We were competitive in the games against Brisbane and Melbourne City. and yet only got 1 point from 9. During the run home we need to beat Adelaide and the 4 teams just above us. SFC and MVC look a touch above the rest. Points against them particularly as well as Roar and City will be a bonus, but the other games are what will define our season.

We are young and inconsistent - we can't make young heads old quickly - but tough lessons are being learned and we look to be on the improve. TBH that was what we almost of us wanted before the season started. 14 games to go in the league and we still have it all to play for COYY:pirashoot::pirashoot::pirashoot:

SFC 75
MVC 71

BNE 63
MCI 62

NIX 57
PTH 56
WSW 56
NUJ 55

CCM 52

ADL 49

The next 5 games are Nix, City, Perth, ADL and WSW. After 2 performances that showed fight against 2 of the favourites for the comp we now need to get results in what is on paper basically the teams we have to beat to climb up the ladder. We have been there before this season with a couple of good games back to back and then followed by some dire performances. Now is the time to find some consistency and Tavares back should help.
