Well that was a tough season but once we sold so many good players I guess it was always going to be.

The positives.....we lost a great Manager but replaced him with his understudy and Phil proved himself to be up to the task. I'm hoping he and the team continue to improve but Mossy certainly appears to be a good fit for us.

We brought in some decent new players. Roux and Bosnar are starting 11 material and if we can get Kim playing to the standard he is capable of then we have a star in our midst.

Caceras made the breakthrough to first team Football and Fitzy had a very solid season.

The Yellow Army found their voice in great style and the prawn sandwich brigade joined in at last. Finally the Mariners fans came to life.....at the current rate of improvement only the Drive Bys and Victory will be louder than us.

The band.......these guys are so good I just love them......brilliant idea by somebody.

The Negatives....

Our forwards failed to fire apart from Bernie who almost single handedly saved our season.

Dour negative football was served up for much of the season.

A horrible defensive mindset crept over the club signalling a team that was in damage limitation rather than a team that genuinely wanted to have a go......that it not the Mariners way.

Our defence was terrible early on but the addition of Bosnar and the improvement of Chesty meant that we were competitive for the second half of the season.

Player Marks.

Pasfield C. Didn't take his opportunity and that horrendous blunder cost him his season. Having said that he had a couple of good games.
Reddy A. What a redemption. Fantastic season and Player of the Year. Probably the main reason we didn't come in the bottom 3.
Bosnar. B. Quite impressive. Tough and reads the game well. Needs to work on his set piece.
Anderson C+. Terrible early on and still prone to mistakes but showed real improvement and looks to have the tools to be a decent player. Probably the most improved from start to finish.
Griffiths C-. Great debut but sometimes unsteady after that. Some potential.
Rose B-. Probably his weakest season yet but still often our best attacking weapon. One he got dropped he improved a lot.
Roux B. Still raw and a little sloppy defensively but clearly a quality player. A star in the making.
Siep C. Average season but did improve. That volley was beautiful.
Caceras. C+. Decent season. Showed he can play at this level. Good with the ball at his feet and chimed in with a couple of terrific goals.
Cernak D. Tried hard but didn't really do enough.
Fitz. B. Good season. His work rate is probably the best in the team. Needs to try and stay calm when he does he is top class as show by his finish against Brisbane.
Flores C+. Sad to see him go. Probably slightly underachieved but the team set up was poor and he was let down somewhat by his teammates who were happy to leave everything to him.
Hutcho C. Usual mixed bag. His toughness was great at times and he had a few good games but frustrating to watch and although his job was to protect a shaky defence his constant playing back when we were building an attack was annoying to say the least.
Monty B+. Some games he took by the scruff of the neck and won it for us on his own. Plays some lovely through balls and tough as teak. Finishing is woeful and needs to be worked on.
Sim C+. Solid pro. Never let us down.
Sterjovski B-. Showed a lot more quality this year. Intelligent Footballer.
Triff. C+. Solid pro. Has some class. Good addition to the squad.
Duke C+. Work rate was sensational. Some good games and probably our best in he GF. Let down by our formation.
Ibini B+. Please come home Bernie. Saved our season.
Kim C. Some flashes of pure class but needs to get tougher and busier.
Simon C+. Brave and also worked his socks off but finishing wasn't great this year. Also let down by lack of support and poor team structure.

Moss B-. Did well to steady a sinking ship but his charges got smashed a few times and he had us playing Anti-Football some games.
Overall a promising start to the management game.

Crawley A+. How good is this bloke. Legend.

I pretty much agree with most of your grades and summations. Good post.

Reddy for mine was our player of the year, without any doubt.
Field player of the year I would have to give to ................…

Probably Fitzy over mont, it's close as no one really stood out.

Did anyone keep track with our voting each week, who scored the most votes after Reddy?

Storm was incredible this season. Cannot believe this guy couldn't get a run at glorwy. Over the course of the season he gave away the odd goal due to positioning but I really thought he was a stand out on the park for us this year. Fitzy always a work horse. And Reddy, good campaign.

Season 9 was business as usual for the mariners... To replace virtually the entire starting 11 and coach yet still finish top 3 and make the semi finals is a testament to the quality of the mariners structures, systems and culture.

Consistently better

Did you keep a running total all season?

22 votes to Justin Pasfield was pretty impressive considering how few games he played.
I was very surprised that Reddy didn't get the most votes I thought he was our best over the whole season. I am thinking that maybe a lot of people refused to vote for him because of his past (reputation) I know I wouldn't vote for him at first, but I'm a convert now and am very pleased to have in the squad.
Wee mac and Trent both did very well before leaving, once again showing how impressive we did as a club to go so well this year with the loss of personel we had.

Storm was fantastic for a young guy with minimal experience. Was caught out a couple of times by experienced attackers but overall more than held his own. Excellent pickup. Was tired mid season so his play dropped. Got some rest & came on really well. Looking forward to next year for him as he will go into preseason knowing he is the right back not gee I hope i impress. Would like to see him work on his crosses & timing of delivery to Duke. Otherwise fantastic.

Great idea for a thread Wombat ... will add more latter...

However the biggest thing for me was the band ... great guys and he is the Portland copying us .. well maybe...

The best call of the lot especially when they snake around the stadium... over to the Timbers...

22 votes to JPas because he was quite good in the games before the Newcastle f**k up.
I think the weakness of our defence really showed how good our goalkeeping was this year. JPad effed it big in a derby, and Reddy rarely let us down since. There was one game, where he rushed out of the box and put his arms in a shite position and cleaned up the player where he should've gotten a red, but apart from that he was stellar this year. Couldn't fault him.

Fitzy, Monty and Bernie get special mentions. Bernie was KEY for us turning it around towards the end of the season, Monty was the consummate work horse he always is, and Fitzy was great too.
Favourite moments of the season were the wins against the Scummers. The 3-1 was fantastic. Worst moment was definitely the 5-1 loss to Welly, that sucked.

I'd have to say despite the turmoil at times and painful losses (players and staff, not matches), I really enjoyed the 2013/14 season as a Mariners fan.

My favourite moments (not in any order):
  • Being 2 goals up over the Jets inside 6 mins and unbeaten by them for the season
  • Taking all 9 points from Sydney FC
  • Beating both the top 2 teams (and rightful grand finalists...) within the last 3 competition rounds
  • Continuing our blow-for-blow rivalry with the noisy new kids - now 3 wins each, 2 draws, 7 goals apiece (and one instance each of shattering the others finals dreams ;))
  • The away bay at Parramatta for the semi-final - just best ever :overheadl:
  • Two magic ACL weeknights with exciting victories and amazing atmosphere
  • The band
  • The cannon :piralaugh:
  • Liam Reddy - keeping up his end of the bargain from the brief 'welcome' conversation we had down at Bankstown City Lions pre-season
  • Celebrating Mile being Mile - I tip my hat
  • Beautiful 'twilight over the palm trees and Broadwater' Bluetongue (or whatever were supposed to call it now)
  • Damnit - just donning the yellow and navy and cheering for our boys!
  • AND spending the whole of the 2013/14 season (well, until this time tomorrow) being THE A-LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

It was 4.1 against Welly but felt like 6 or 7. I sat next to Matty Simon in that game and he was ropable.....you can never doubt that man's passion......he also told me we don't have a specialist defensive coach which explains why we are so sloppy defensively just in basics like positioning. Someone on here was smart enough to mention Dutchy should coach our defence.....and maybe then we wouldn't have to play 11 behind the ball!!!!!!

That 4 nil drubbing by Adelaide was pretty rough as well.
