BLUFFER'S GUIDE

Mariners coach Paul Okon reckons it would be "foolish" to read too much into City's 2-1 loss to Adelaide United last week but Central Coast should take confidence out of that result.

The Gosford-based club will arrive at AAMI Park in last spot in the Hyundai A-League table but Adelaide were in the same position last week when they stunned City to register just their second win of the campaign.

Central Coast could move above the Reds again with a draw - the same result as they managed at home on New Year's Eve when City needed a 90th-minute penalty from Bruno Fornaroli to avoid defeat.

While Okon still rates City as genuine A-League contenders, it's hard to avoid the sense Fornaroli and Co. are struggling.

City have won just one of their seven A-League matches since they lifted the Westfield FFA Cup in November and have scored just three second-half goals during that period.

In fact, City have scored just four goals in the final half hour of matches this season - the least in the A-League - and only Perth Glory (12) and Western Sydney Wanderers (11) have conceded more in the same period than the Bundoora-based club (10).

Those statistics must be cause for concern for interim coach Michael Valkanis.

City will have key midfielder Neil Kilkenny back from suspension for the visit of the Mariners, while Central Coast are unlikely to make any changes.

Neil Kilkenny will return for Melbourne City after missing last week through suspension.

The Mariners will be aiming to end a seven-match winless streak that has included six draws - a far cry from their promising November when Central Coast picked up seven points from four matches and briefly entered the A-League's top six.

ROUTE TO GOAL

Last season City scored at a rate of 2.28 goals per game and conceded 1.66 goals per game.

In 2016/17, they have tightened up their defence to concede 1.33 goals per game but their attacking output has also dropped to 1.6 goals per game - simply put Valkanis' side doesn't have much room for error.

While Fornaroli has generally maintained his impressive standards, City need more goals from the likes of Fernando Brandan (3), Nicolas Colazo (1) and Bruce Kamau (0).

Bruno Fornaroli (City) - Two class finishes, his second in particular, further proof – if we needed – that

Central Coast's main issue is in defence with the Mariners having conceded more goals (32) than any other team this season for a goal difference of -16.

WHO'S BEEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK?

Dean Bouzanis. Having become City's number one goalkeeper this season, the 26-year-old signed a contract extension on Tuesday to stay at the club until the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

Sign Cahill and their goal output drastically drops :piralaugh:

Really it's all accounted for by one thing... Colazo, Caceres and Cahill < Mooy.

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
cant say im overly enthused about a victory over Manchester City South, even excitement about a draw eludes me.....so anything other than a deadset flogging will cheer me up no end

I'm with Recky. Avoiding a humiliating flogging is a good outcome.

Oh and neither of the 2 dogs who worked so hard to undermine our club to have a good game for Plastic FC

Was about to say I'd be happy with a solid performance. But we need a win. No ifs or buts really.

Need it for the fans. Need it for the players. Need it for the coach. Need it for the table.

Paul Okon's preview of the game:
https://t.co/tfzcVCQLZn
“We will look to freshen up against Melbourne City after a tough physical battle against Sydney FC and a long trip to Wellington with a relatively short turn around. It’s always given us good performances in the past so we’re quite confident that our squad can do the job, whoever goes out there.

I'd say Powell and Trent as a minimum. Possibly Ashcroft as did well with Fornaroli last game and would allow a freshen up in midfield maybe putting Rose in and Berry to bench

Cheers Big Al.

Rose next to Monty for Berry or Ascroft...? Presuming Rose. But doesn't seem ideal to keep switching players in and out of CB. Be Happy with Ascroft alongside Monty. He's a ball winner and when Rose or Berry is alongside Monty neither of them run the creative play and it's left to Monty anyway, so might as well put a true ball winner next to him and have some more defensive and physical presence on the park - especially for set pieces and defending cahill.

Guessing Fab instead of Trent is going to piss a few off. Though I guess it's technically Powell for Kubi and Fab going wide again.

Been a bit surprised how hard most have been on Fab for 4 lack lustre games and 2 or 3 poor ones - when on balance he's been a great player for us and has shown a lot more positive signs in the last 4 weeks than negative ones imo. I think how much we all love Trent and a desire to see him start may be influencing some in being harsher critics on him. Fab's scoring record for us has been very good overall, and at 27, personally think we really need both Fab and Trent for our future success. It's exactly the kind of depth and competition we need across the park.
