A-League club Melbourne Victory will play a one-off match against Italian giants Juventus at Telstra Dome next month.

Victory chairman Geoff Lord said Juventus had guaranteed they would send a squad that was close to full strength and he expected the May 30 clash to attract a huge amount of interest.

"Juventus to Italy are like Manchester United to the United Kingdom, they are one of the all-time great clubs in the world," Lord said.

"They have agreed to play one game in Australia ... there's no AFL football (in Melbourne) that night so we are hopeful it is a major spectacle and a major sporting event for the whole of Melbourne."

In particular, Lord said they were expecting a huge amount of interest from Melbourne's large Italian community.

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri said in a press release issued by Melbourne Victory that he was looking forward to the game.

Melbourne Victory is one of the top teams from the A-League, and Im definitely looking forward to playing the upcoming match in Melbourne, said Ranieri.

The club also has a large pool of fans in Australia and we are looking forward to meeting our fans there.

Victory players agreed to delay their annual leave by a week to play in the match, but striker Daniel Allsopp said it was an easy decision.

"Its a good challenge to play against players of the calibre that play for Juventus, hopefully we can learn something if nothing else," Allsopp said.

why are we not ambitious to get big matches played as gorman rejected the offer to play zidane and the rest?

Note to all - you don't 'verse' anybody. It's Juve *versus* Melbourne.

Verse relates to poetry.

Versus means against.

Melb said they need to sell more tickets to break even than there are seats at bluey

this is the case for every home game they play at telstra dome

Any idea how much comparatively it costs them to hold a game, to us?
I cant see games played at bluey. Though a well timed saturday night game in sydney could still draw the mariners a big crowd and some cash. If they want to play at homebush, they should organise one of these matches there.

Congrats to the tards. This game is huge and will sell out for sure.

Juve surely are in the top ten for clubs worldwide for success and popularity.

Would be great to see some sort of link up between the tards and the "Grand Old Lady". It would benefit our game in the long term no doubt.

What a love about this game is that 'club' football can still have a possible sell out during the winter season when the other rival codes are playing. This should be happening in Sydney or Brisbane as well.

It would really piss the other codes of if aleague teams had  pre season friendlies against uefa clubs selling out in Melb. and Syd., during their seasons. Then enjoying the summer with only a new 20/20 cricket format to worry about.

Plus we also have the national teams playing and getting good size crowds. Football is really going to be big...
