Very disappointing to hear that Dan Heffernan has gone unpaid by the Goulburn Valley Suns, disgraceful considering their tickets at $15 were almost as much as the A-League!

The PlayStation 4 NPL 2016 Champions of Australia will come from New South Wales after Edgeworth Eagles and Sydney United 58 FC won through to the Grand Final.
Edgeworth Eagles became the first club from Northern NSW Football to reach the decider courtesy of a gritty 1-0 victory over Perth SC at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday night.

The winning goal came from the boot of Hyundai A-League Championship winning striker Daniel McBreen in the 51st minute as Edgeworth Eagles won their second successive match away from home after they defeated Victorian club Bentleigh Greens in extra time in the Elimination Finals.

A Panny Nikas inspired Sydney United 58 FC then joined the Eagles in the decider earlier this afternoon as they came from a goal down to beat Brisbane Strikers 2-1.

Trent Clulow had given the visiting Strikers the advantage at the break but a Nikas double in the second half sent the hosts through as they attempt to try and win their second PlayStation 4 NPL Australia title after claiming the inaugural competition in 2013.

Nikas’ two goals mean he has five goals in two matches after his hat-trick against Adelaide City last weekend.

Sydney United 58 FC will host the PlayStation 4 NPL 2016 Grand Final after narrowly finishing ahead of Edgeworth Eagles on the points system used to decide the host club.

The points tally of the two Grand Finalists that determined who would host the decider finished as follows:

The PlayStation 4 NPL 2016 Grand Final will be LIVE streamed via PlayStation 4 consoles and on www.nationalpremierleagues.com.au. Tickets for the match will be available at the venue on match day.

Sydney United beat Edgeworth Eagles in NPL final

A hat-trick from former Central Coast Mariners midfielder Glen Trifiro handed Sydney United a 4-1 win over Edgeworth in the NPL Finals Series decider at Edensor Park on Sunday.

The Eagles could count themselves unlucky after a disallowed goal and a deflected Panny Nikas free kick left them two goals down at the break.

They pulled one back early in the second half when Keanu Moore was bundled over in the box and Keigo Moriyasu buried the rebound after his spot kick was saved by Thomas Manos.

But Trifiro scored with 15 minutes to go when he ran through on goal after Dylan Holz had given the ball away on the halfway line then completed his treble in the dying minutes when he slotted home a low cross at the far post.

“We couldn’t catch a break there early, and that put us on the back foot. It was a poor second goal we conceded, but if we’d gone in one-nil, maybe it might have been a different game,” Edgeworth coach Damian Zane said.

“We got back to 2-1. We said at half-time if we got the next goal we were in it. We thought the free kick was harsh, and then to deflect.

“We had chances at 2-1, but it wasn’t to be. They got a couple at the end. We’re not going to sit and die wondering.”

Zane had promised selection surprises, and he did not disappoint.

Veteran striker Daniel McBreen
started in holding midfield with Holz, who had played on the left wing in earlier games.

Japanese import Moriyasu started up front and Aaron McLoughlin played at left back in a defensive 5-4-1 formation.

Attacking midfielder Moore played wider on the left and supported Moriyasu in several counter-attacking raids as Edgeworth sat deep with players behind the ball.

Zane made no apologies for Edgeworth’s defensive mindset in their third game in a row away from home against a team stacked with former A-League players.

“It is what it is. They’ve got a budget four times or more ours. Should we have played 4-3-3 and opened up? We’re not quite there yet. We’re building each year,” he said.

“First half I thought Keanu and Keigo caused them a lot of problems. I think Bren Hammel was in behind them twice and couldn’t get his touch.

“They’re a good team, but for our boys to respond the way they did in the second half. I thought we were the better team in the first 25 minutes of the half. Our end product, crossing and finishing, was just a bit off.”

Zane said the artificial grass at Sydney United Sports Centre was a “massive advantage” for the home side, even though his team had trained at Northern NSW’s Speers Point fields this week.

Former North Queensland Fury A-League midfielder Nikas opened the scoring midway through the first half with his sixth goal in three NPL Finals Series games.

The 28-year-old’s free kick deflected off the wall and wrong-footed Eagles goalkeeper Jim Fogarty.

Nikas had hit the post with a 25-metre free kick five minutes earlier.

The hosts started to get on top after the goal, controlling possession and forcing Edgeworth to defend deeper.

But the game turned in one frantic minute when the Eagles bundled the ball home from a corner only to have the goal cancelled out when the assistant referee spotted an infringement.

Sydney United went up the other end and doubled their lead when Nikas chested down a ball for Trifiro to lash home a volley past Fogarty from near the penalty spot.

Edgeworth looked like going further behind when ex-Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets striker Chris Payne hit the inside of the left post with a dipping volley from 25 metres after beating the offside trap.

But the visitors survived that scare and started to control possession, taking up residence in the United half and creating several half-chances in the final stages of the first half.

Beauchamp is back where it all started:

Journeyman centre-back Michael Beauchamp has signed with NSL side Marconi Stallions.

The 35-year-old started his career with Marconi in 2000 and has been persuaded to return by coach Tony Candy.

Beauchamp most recently played for Bankstown City in the NSL, after a spell in Thailand following his departure from Western Sydney Wanderers in 2014.

Marconi finished 4th on the ladder of NPL2 season just gone, CCM finished 10th.

They lost 4- 3 in their Elimination Final against Mounties Wanderers FC, who finished 5 pts behind them 5th on the ladder.

Coach Tony Candy obviously shoring-up his defence with signing Meggsy, trying to get them back up to the NPL1.

Might be to get him fit too.

Signing in mid season when he isn't fit is setting him up to fail (See Usok T) Winter there and a pre season with us and it may be worth a punt on him.

Who knows?

Am I the only one that thinks Trifiro could have added something to our squad, especially at #10, this season?

Yes considering he can take free kicks and corners and we don't have a youth player in that position.

However he was part of the brat pack
