FFA approves $150k for "Youth" Marquee

A-LEAGUE clubs have effectively been handed a $150,000 cheque each to spend on their brightest young prospect.

An Olyroos marquee player will be the feature of a radical overhaul of the A-League salary cap, designed to ensure clubs do not lose their best young talent.

Each club will be allowed to nominate an "Under-23 marquee", with up to $150,000 of his wages to be excluded from the salary cap.

There is no limit to what the player can be paid but he has to be Australian - or Kiwi in Wellington's case.

The new rule will increase each club's spending budget to $2.525 million for season IV, up from $2.25m last season - that does not factor in a marquee player, such as Sydney FC's John Aloisi.

Football Federation Australia yesterday confirmed that the model would come into effect next season.

"The concept is to ensure that talented younger players, who might otherwise be tempted to go overseas, stay in the A-League for as long as possible by offering them a competitive salary," an FFA spokesperson said.

"It's not going stop a really talented player going overseas but it will encourage them to stay a here a bit longer and consolidate themselves as players."

Olyroos players are only now beginning to get the kind of remuneration they deserve.

With the Olyroo exemption in place Newcastle may have been able to hold on to Stuart Musialik and Mark Bridge, who recently signed upgraded deals with Sydney FC.

Mark Milligan, Ruben Zadkovich (Sydney FC), Danny Vukovic (Central Coast), Adrian Leijer (Melbourne) and Nick Ward (Perth) were all on well-below-average wages in the inaugural season, and some had only slight increases thereafter.

A steady stream of Olyroos have left our shores and Milligan, Zadkovich and Adelaide's Nathan Burns are set to depart for Europe before next season while Nikita Rukavystya (Perth) has a trial with German side Hannover 96.

Newcastle's stubbornness in refusing to utilise the Additional Services Agreement will hurt more as the years wear on. The ASA is 25 per cent of the salary cap, meaning it will increase every year.

The Professional Footballers' Association originally floated a similar concept, where 50 per cent of the wages of three Olyroos players would be outside the cap.

But PFA chief executive Brendan Schwab last night said he was happy the concept was being introduced.

The FFA spokesperson confirmed that the operation will be reviewed at the end of the season.

Danny's our man, for sure, under that sort of agreement. So long as he qualifies as an 'Olyroo'.

he wont be U23 by then. I reckon Boogs will be the U23 marquee if that is the case:

Heres a list of the different clubs marquees:

Mariners: Danny/Boogs
Scum: Holland
SFC: Bridge/Musialik/maybe Biddle/Tsattalios if first 2 are excluded due to age
MVFC: Broxham/Ryall
QLD: Kruse/Zullo
Adelaide: Djite/Burns if he doesnt leave
Perth: Rukavystya
Wellington: Hearfield/Sigmund/Barbarouses

I think this is a great idea. Means that the young guys can make the money they would have made playing somewhere not too crash hot in europe, and will keep young players here a bit longer, and hopefully have then leave in a better position.

150k outside the cap is a very reasonable amount.

Will be interesting to see how this affects signings. Means the bling will have enough money for a couple more players, which is, as usual, an fine coincidence.

i think its an awesome idea too,
it could also bring olyroos from europe
back to australia and get more game time
and possibly more money here.

will Sydney now tell Bridge they are cutting his wage ????

I cant see to many boys coming home for $150k, great to reward guys like Boogs etc that have grown in stature as valuable players.

It is 150k outside the salary cap. You could pay them 300k, but 150 would be in the salary cap.
Hence someone like bridge at sydney will have like 10k in the salary cap, 100 odd outside

they might have to pay them minimum wage under the salary cap though
