Comeback Nik For Mariners?

Mar 10 2008 22:40

NIK Mrdja is tantalisingly close to hitting the training track as Lawrie McKinna challenges his remaining strikers to step up to the plate at Bluetongue.
As he digests the prospect of being without goalkeeper Danny Vukovic until the end of November, the Central Coast Mariners boss is also pondering his options at the other end of the pitch.

John Aloisis departure for Sydney FC has left a big hole and McKinna has challenged the hit men on the clubs books to show they are more than capable of filling the Socceroo forwards boots.

Mrdja made a cracking start to the season for the Mariners and his early form was enough to earn a call up into the Australia squad for Septembers 1-0 friendly defeat by Argentina.

It all went wrong swiftly after that though with the forward succumbing to yet another knee problem that ended his season prematurely yet again.

This after Mrdja missed the entire 2005/6 campaign and managed just six games the following year.

With numerous setbacks and false starts, the players Mariners future is in limbo but McKinna has his fingers crossed that light is finally at the end of the tunnel.

He told au.fourfourtwo.com: John Aloisi has moved on and so yes, it is an opportunity for some of the other boys to really push on.

Im told that Nik Mrdja is only a week or so away from starting running again so hopefully he can get back to fitness.

"Were not in a position to gamble (with regard to contracts) but well give him every opportunity to show he can get back. Clearly a fit Nik Mrdja is an asset.

Young Matty Simon now has to step up to the plate and build on his first season. Hopefully getting an opportunity for the Under 23 side (Simon was involved in Sundays 1-1 draw with Mexico in San Francisco) will give him another boost.

McKinna is expected to meet with his squad next week to discuss numerous contract situations with Tom Pondeljak and Aloisi having already departed.

McKinna is confident that he can agree terms with those that wish to stay and as for fresh faces, expect some but not simply to make up the numbers.

He said: It might be were looking at around four new players for next season but new players have to be better than the ones weve already got.

Keep him fit off the park until about halfway thru the season and then let him lose.

I'm a fan of Nik and if he could keep fit I really think he could be top scorer in the league. I would hate to see him sign with another club and we get punished for not keeping him on. Playing as little as he has and getting a call up for the socceroos is an indication of others considering him to have great potential also. I hope we keep him and he has a good off season and comes out all boot's blazing come V4.

as much as nik mrdja is an arrogant wanker (not speculation, fact, i know first hand) he's a tremendous player and you can't help but feel sorry for how hard it has been for him the last three years. he started v3 like a house on fire and easily would have been golden boot had he not been injured again..

i really hope for the sake of the club, the fans and for nik that we can get at least 1 solid season out of him.

he does seem bloody weak though.. you'd think he'd have sorted his knee out by now.

Niks knee injury is caused from bone bruising, it takes a (very) long time to heal due to lack of blood flow to the area. It must be hard for a player to sit on the bench for virtually three years straight. Give the guy a chance Im sure he is going to be busting at the seams to get back on the field and show what he can do. Good luck to him

Mr Citizen, I like so many others on here rate Mrdj highly but feel it's a bit like a broken record, that record ironically is by;
Artists: "Operator Please"
the track: "Just a Song about Ping-Pong".  :p  ;D

The sooner we find out if nik is staying and who else we are signing (marquee or not) the better imo. Although the club will most likely spread out announcements to keep interest up.

well the club will know if or not they do have nik for next year and they have said on a number of occassions that they will finalise everything in the next few weeks

and another thing, just because they dont make things public, it doesnt mean they havent finalised our squad. there might be a lot of things happening behind closed doors that might mean they have to keep things secret. for instance, if we are signing a marquee from a European League, their seasons dont finish for months and the clubs they currently play for might not want to officially announce releases etc until their seasons are finished. so legally there might be some issues

not necessarily - Nik has to prove his fitness first and that he's over his knee problems, we can't go signing a striker on 6 figures again if he's got a dodgy knee and may only play 3 or 4 games.

Nik is contracted until June I think, Lawrie will hold off as late as possible.......which could be dangerous if another club comes in for Nik?

Surely he wont be offered 6 figures as a gamble. Only bling are stupid enough to do that, and they cant have that much left to afford it.

Another team like perth would be putting too bigger gamble on their season.

Perth will be willing to take the chance
You're not wrong there. He was their top goalscorer in the final season of the NSL, in a team that also contained Mori and Despotovski.

And that was how long ago?

Since then he's had a very poor record, with few games spread over 3 seasons. Quite a dangerous player when he's on the pitch and fit, has a great boot which would knock back goalies two feet on impact, but the record he has over these last 3 seasons speaks louder than any past history or odd glimpses of brilliance. Needs to prove he's capable, and can play for MOST of the season, not a cameo.

Well think about it.

Perth aint knocking goals in reguraly, apart from when versusing Newcastle :lol!:
They need to take a chance with a prolific goal scorer, even if they are injuring prone
