Cash-strapped Adelaide United call for reform
By Val Migliaccio
December 20, 2008

ADELAIDE United's fiscal success at the FIFA Club World and AFC Champions League has forced the club to table immediate changes to the Football Federation Australia over the unbalanced distribution of prizemoney.

The current agreement, which has been in place since 2004 - a year before the start of the A-League - has seen Adelaide lose 60 per cent of the $2.8 million in prizemoney it has received from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation to seven other other clubs and the Football Federation Australia.

Adelaide jagged $2.2 million from FIFA on Thursday night for beating Al Ahly 1-0 in Yokohama at the Club World Cup and $600,000 for being runner-up in Asia.

As it stands, Adelaide will get $1.12 million for finishing fifth at the Club World Cup and runner-up to Gamba Osaka in the AFC Champions League.

Adelaide is expected to break even after spending $2 million on its 15 international club matches this season.

The FFA will pocket 4 per cent of Adelaide's hard work - $112,000 - while Perth, Newcastle, Melbourne, Sydney, Queensland, Wellington and Central Coast will share an incredible $1.16 million.

Adelaide chief executive Sam Ciccarello said the Reds wanted to look at the distribution of the lucrative prizemoney.

He said all clubs agreed to the current breakdown of all prizemoney from international competitions but now Adelaide had pioneered a new chapter in Australian soccer history it was time for change. And it appears that the FFA and the member clubs will agree to the new distribution format.

Ciccarello wouldn't elaborate on the new system but it appears the clubs winning international money will be able to earn a greater slice of the pie rather than the current 40 per cent.

Ciccarello said a decision should be made within a fortnight after Adelaide put the motion forward to all clubs and the FFA.

"Everybody had their focus on running an A-League club at the time the financial rewards system was put forward in 2004," Ciccarello said. "Back then if a club was going to participate in an international club competition it was a bonus.

"We've put a submission into the FFA and the A-League clubs and there is a review of the prizemoney distribution as we talk."

Ciccarello said Adelaide was also potentially close to signing more sponsorship dollars from Japanese companies after more than 200 nations around the world watched United's three Club World Cup matches.

"We've got four or five companies interested but we've got to continue our relationship in Asia," he said. "That means getting back into the AFC Champions League, that's the goal for 2010."

Thoughts?

Seems a reasonable complaint from Adelaide TBH.

WTF should they be subsidising other clubs through their efforts?

If they hadnt made the final of the ACL, they would have lost money and I doubt anyone would chip in to cover their losses so why should they share the profits.

Exactly and I'm sure every other club that were to make the ACL Final would be in the same position. They've earned their money by being successful- why take it away?

Yes, I had to suffer Westfields today.

Jam packed with Bogans spending my f**king hard earned surplus.

I hope they spent it on imported goods that f**ks the balance of payments causing interest rates to go up.

That'll learn them

Anyway..................

Socialist football, prize winners share with the losers

The irony is that almost no Communist regime actually adopted such a Communistic way of running football. And many people came here fleeing that ideology too.

If the FFA continues to enforce such a centralised approach to running the game, how can we grow and prosper, how can we possibly improve the quality of football in Australia? There has to be an incentive for personal and collective betterment, which this system offers none of.

I'm sure we've all debated the merits of the salary cap, etc but the real issue is that clubs that are well-run and doing the right thing (United, Victory and Mariners) will have earned their rewards while clubs that are poorly run will continue to make poor decisions (Sydney, Newcastle, Perth) irrespective of what system is in place.

Competition and reward for success and tough bikkies for doing poorly is fine if we could afford to lose clubs.

Survival of the fittest only works if there is a eradication of the less fit from the gene pool. Without other cities, other clubs, other fans lining up to take the place of clubs that don't work, we can't afford to let any club die. Which means we need to spread the wealth.

60/40 though is obviously too much. All the clubs will agree now that the situation has shown to be more succesful than could of been anticipated.

Re: Adelaide's complaints.

I have empathy with Adelaide, they are in a similar position to anyone else who has signed a deal only to find out later on what the cost is to them. Particularly so when they achieve success they didn't think too much about, when they agreed to be a franchisee.

To offer a counter view to that expressed by Adelaide though, a number of A-League clubs have agreed, through the FFA, to postpone games with Adelaide while they marched into the ACL Final and then onto the CWC. I cannot imagine the clubs would have been so agreeable to the postponement requests if it meant they (or the A-League) wouldn't see some credit for Adelaide getting as far as they did. Getting some cut of the prizemoney may go some way to explaining the camaraderie amongst the A-League clubs when it came to this.

I believe, also, that all A-League clubs benefit financially from each seasons' Finals series gate takings, no matter which clubs were involved in the Finals. And also a cut of the gate for the Final.

With the salary cap, it helps to keep clubs competitive, even if they have won everything on offer or come last. That way, it stops one club *cough Sydney cough* from buying up all the players, blitzing the comp. AND getting all the revenue from prizemoney.

Socialist, sure, but it is certainly a way to provide a revenue stream for all clubs and also ensure a continuation of the co operation that Adelaide received from the other clubs.
