ACADEMY WRAP: Mariners v Spirit FC

The Mariners Academy were looking to get back to winning was this week as they faced the 2015 Minor Premiers Spirit FC.
And they did just that, defeating Spirit FC 3-2 thanks to two goals from Trent Buhagiar and an own goal from Spirit FC's Jayden McLeod.

The Mariners Academy welcomed back centre back Nathan Verity who started after six weeks on the sidelines with a groin injury, playing 60 minutes and showing no signs of his injury hampering him. CCMA also welcomed back midfielder Adam Berry who came on off the bench for Verity in the 60th minute after spending 8 weeks out with a knee injury. CCMA also had a new face up front after completing the signing of the talented Shelford Dais from Brisbane Strikers during the week, who troubled the Spirit defence before coming off at half time.

It was the Mariners who started brightly and took the lead in the sixth minute when a mistake at the back from the Spirit FC centre back gifted Trent Buhagiar a golden chance 1 on 1 with the Spirit keeper. Buhagiar made no mistake with his finish and calmly slotted his shot just inside the post.

The Mariners doubled their lead in the 13th minute when captain Reece Papadimtrios' through ball found new signing Shelford Dais. Dais' low cross into the box was deflected by Jayden Mon into his own net to send CCMA 2 goals ahead early into the game.

CCMA went three ahead in the 20th minute when Buhaigars pace drew the Spirit keeper off his line. Buhagiar then calmly finished again to double his tally for the night.

Spirit FC nearly pulled a goal back in the 38th minute when a ball from Spirit FC's winger found an unmarked Nathan Jagelman. Jagelman's acrobatical bicycle kick was heading for the back of the net, only to be well saved by keeper Adam Pearce high to his right.

The Central Coast Mariners Academy dominated the first half and went in ahead at 3-0, controlling most of the possession and not giving Spirit FC any real chances in attack.

CCMA nearly went 4-0 ahead in the 53rd minute when a corner from Papadimtrios found the head of Christopher Hurley. Hurley's powerful header was bound for the back of the net but was very well saved by Spirit keeper Murray Nelson.

The Mariners side had a great chance to make it 4-0 and a hat trick to Buhagiar in the 67th minute when a superb ball over the top from Ryan Peterson was straight into the path of speedster Buhaigar. Buhagiar went 1 on 1 with the keeper but could not find the target, with his shot sailing well over the crossbar.

Spirit FC had a number of chances in the 80th minute but could not find a way past a flying Pearce, making three saves in quick succession. They did pull a goal back however in the 82nd minute via a penalty which was converted by Spirit FC's Daniel Cunningham.

Spirit then scored their second in the 88th minute when an unfortunate slip at the back was capitalised upon by Spirit FC's Mark Mcalpine to make the score 3-2 in the dying minutes of the game.

CCMA held on for the victory after a dominant 90 minutes in what was a very cold night at the home of Spirit FC, Christie Park.

With two important players back from injury, and new signing Dais all performing well against Spirit, it looks to be positive signs ahead for the Academy who will look to keep the momentum running into next weeks game vs Mt Druitt.

ACADEMY WRAP: Mariners v Mt Druitt Town Rangers
mariners-v-rangers-npl2_rkt3svfqwtmp1y0st5t96a43h.jpg

Monday, 23 May 2016
@CCMariners
The Central Coast Mariners Academy took on Mt Druitt Town Rangers on Saturday night at Pluim Park, an important match up with the Academy side only 3 points ahead of Mt Druitt on the table.
It was a bright start from the CCMA side, and in the 10th minute they capitalised on their good start by taking the lead. Trent Buhagiar was found out wide in acres of space. He utilised his pace down the wing and cut back his cross to find Ryan Peterson on the edge of the box. Peterson scuffed his shot but Lachie Wales was there at the back post finish off the move.

After the opening goal, the game was even with both teams defending well and finding it hard to create anything clear cut. However that would soon change.

In the 22nd minute Mt Druitt found their way through the Coast's left side of defence and were through on goal. Nathan Verity attempted a desperate challenge from behind but unfortunately brought the big Mt Druitt striker down and was given a straight red card. The penalty was converted and it was all square at 1-all.

The restructure at the back saw Reece Papadimitrios drop into the backline, and unsurprisingly Mt Druitt started to gain a larger share of possesion against the 10 men Mariners as halftime drew nearer, but the Academy boys defended strongly and the opposition struggled to created chances.

With no way through the back four, it took a wonder goal by Mt Druitt from outside the box just five minutes before halftime to take the lead. The ball sailed into the top right corner leaving Adam Pearce in goals with no chance. 2-1 would be the halftime score in the Rangers' favour.

Not long after halftime Lachie Wales was played through 1 on 1 with the Mt Druitt keeper. However the Rangers' custodian made himself big, and made the save.

Once again Mt Druitt had strong spells of possesion early in the second half but couldn't break down the 10 man Academy.

As the half went on the Coast began to dominate. Chances were hard to come by but with the pace of Buhagiar, Wales and Cade Mapu who came on as a substitute, Mt Druitt would have to be aware. They could sense the tide was turning and dropped numbers behind the ball and were tough to break down.

Despite constant pressure in the last 15 minutes from the Coast the score would remain 2-1 to the visitors. One lapse in concentration at the back and a wonder goal was all that undid the Academy who can be proud of the fight they put in with 10 men, although will still be disappointed with the result.

The side returns to Pluim Park again next Sunday against Northern Tigers FC, and will be looking to get back on track as the season draws closer to the halfway point. Kick off in the NPL2 match is 3pm.

ACADEMY WRAP: Mariners v Northern Tigers

Kane Runge, @kanerunge1
After a disappointing loss to Mt Druitt last week, the Central Coast Mariners were looking to bounce back to winning ways as they faced the Northern Tigers at Pluim Park, Lisarow on Sunday afternoon.
And bounce back they did, with the Academy claiming a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Ryan Peterson, Trent Buhagiar and Lachlan Wales.

The Academy had the first chance in the 14th minute when Trent Buhagiar found himself on the by-line, he then cut the ball across the face of goal to Adam Berry. Berry made connection but not enough, seeing his shot go just wide of the Northern Tigers goal. The Tigers then had a great chance to take the lead in the 20th minute when Northern Tigers front man Liam McConaghy found himself in some space on top of the box. McConaghy's shot went wide of a diving Adam Pearce and the Academy's goal.

Trent Buhagiar nearly sent the Academy ahead in the 39th minute when he utilised his pace and went past the Tigers defence to be 1 v 1 with their keeper, but despite his great run, Buhagiar couldn't quite find the target to send the home side to the break with a lead. Despite some good chances and a good amount of possession, both sides went into half time on level terms at 0-0.

The first real chance of the second half fell to winger Lachlan Wales. Wales found himself inside the edge of the 18 yard box, he then pulled the trigger but it was brilliantly saved by Tigers keeper Matt Nemes.

The Academy went ahead from the spot in the 66th minute when Lachlan Wales was deemed to be fouled inside the area. Ryan Peterson made no mistake from the spot sending Nemes the wrong way, and his shot into the back of the net. Things went from bad to worse in the 70th minute for the Northern Tigers when Braden Chang was shown a second yellow for descent towards the referee.

The Academy went two goals ahead in the 77th minute when an excellent through ball from Ryan Peterson found Brian Jamba on the right wing. Jamba then crossed his ball to the oncoming Buhagiar who made no mistake in finishing from close range.

CCMA thought they were three goals ahead in the 80th minute when Lachlan Wales finished 1 on 1 past the Tigers keeper, only for the goal to be disallowed for a handball in lead up play. They did go up 3-0 in the 86th minute however, via a Lachlan Wales tap in after substitute Cooper Buswell's shot was blocked by Nemes.

Northern Tigers scored a consolation goal in the 90th minute when substitute Max Glanville was on the end of a cross sending it past a full stretched Adam Pearce.

ACADEMY WRAP: Mariners vs. Bankstown City

Trent Buhagiar bagged a brace
Friday, 10 June 2016-
@CCMariners
The Central Coast Mariners played out a five-goal Thursday night thriller with an experienced Bankstown City outfit away from home where Trent Buhagiar bagged a brace.
A high Bankstown City press had the Mariners Academy on the back foot for the first 20 minutes where the home team pushed hard for the opener.

Leading into the second half, the Mariners looked to push their way back into the match but unfortunately conceded another goal just before heading into the sheds.

Some heated words from Academy Coach Ben Cahn at half time seemed to inspire the Mariners who came out in the second half a different side and pulled the scoreline back to 2-1.

An extremely soft goal gifted the Lions a 3-1 lead but that would not deter the Mariners who chased the game until the final kick.

Buhagiar pulled it back to 3-2 which was followed by a raft of missed opportunities that should have ended the match on even terms at the very least.

Cahn paid credit to the spirit of his side in the second half and takes plenty of optimism into next week's home match against St George.

“Over the past four weeks we have made some personnel changes and have spoken about moving in the right direction,” Cahn said. “We had a poor first half last night but the second half we played as well as we have all season and in the past four games the form has been excellent.

“We expect a strong second round and need to start converting some of our chances to move further up the table.

“Over the next four weeks we expect more results than not, if we perform as we have been over the past month and keep improving at the rate we have been not only will we see some more points on the board but coming into the Hyundai A-League season there will also be some players knocking on the door,” Cahn said.

The Central Coast Mariners Academy are at home against St George this weekend with the first team kicking off at 3pm.

ACADEMY WRAP -
Mariners vs. St. George:

academy_1jbgupf3jc4cz1i6y81fi5hkgj.jpg

The Central Coast Mariners fought hard at home after a short turnaround to fall 4-3 at Pluim Park against St. George with Trent Buhagiar, Steve Whyte, and Cooper Buswell all featuring on the score sheet.

Central Coast Mariners 3 (Trent Buhagiar 3’, Steve Whyte 54’, Cooper Buswell 85’) St George 4 (S de Jesus 32’, Y Konagaya 26’ & 50’, B Pivato 33’)

Despite playing midweek, the Mariners started brightly and took the lead in the 3rd minute via Buhagiar who found himself on the end of a pinpoint Lachlan Wales cross

St. George restored parity in the 27th minute when Yuta Konagaya found some space in the box, Konagaya went onto pull the trigger with a confident finish.

Controversy struck in the 31st minute when Josh Forbes was seemed to be pushed in the back from a corner, the referee had other ideas awarding St. George a penalty. Stefan De Jesus made no mistake and converted the penalty to send the visitors ahead 2-1.

St. George extended their lead to 3-1 in the 33rd minute when Bruno Pivato drove from just inside the 18-yard-box-which found the roof of the net leaving Adam Pearce with no chance in goals.

10 minutes later St. George went down to 10 men after a challenge from Billy Darwich on Trent Buhagiar resulted in push and shove between the two sides.

The home side went close to pulling a goal back just before the break through Wales who had a promising chance to shoot but his shot was just off target.

Ten men St. George found themselves 4-1 up in the 49th minute when Konagaya capitalised on a loose ball in behind the defence and doubled his tally for the day.

The Academy side fired back when Steve Whyte scored in the 53rd minute after making the most of a pin point cross from Shelford Dais.

Central Coast Mariners Academy were also down to 10 men in the 72nd minute when a challenge from captain Reece Papadimitrios was deemed to be a straight red card from referee Samuel Grasso.

After a few opportunities the home team scored in the 81st minute when an Adam Berry cross found the head of Cooper Buswell. Buswell's header found the back of the net, to make for a grandstand finish.

The Academy nearly levelled proceedings in the 90th minute when Buhagiar squared his cross which found an unmarked Buswell just inside the box. Buswell made great connection but couldn't quite put his shot on target.

Despite a flurry of chances in the dying stages, St. George FC came away with a 4-3 win.

Mariners coach Ben Cahn was disappointed with his side’s performance.

“It was another frustrating week for us, we again controlled more than most of the game and wasted numerous opportunities,” Cahn said. “We were fragile and naïve defensively and it cost us again.

“Based on the balance of the game we were a better team than them. We just gifted them goals. There were a couple of decisions, including one that led to their penalty, that were very dubious. But we have to look at ourselves because we’re conceding too many goals. It’s okay to say that we’re young and developing but ultimately we’re well into the second round of the competition and if some of these players are serious about progressing then they need to take some responsibility for their performances.”

“I don’t want to be over critical of the players and the team because again the majority of our performance was very good. But at key moments in the game we were let down by individual errors and individual decision-making. At the moment I feel we’re okay structurally, we control large amounts of the games we play. We always create more chances than the opposition but struggle to convert them and we’re making costly errors at the other end and gifting teams opportunities to score. In our last two games we’re probably responsible for five of the seven goals we’ve conceded.

“On a positive note, structurally we were a better side than them. There were some okay individual performances and new players like Shelford Dais showed a good work ethic.

“Trent Buhagiar, with the A-League season around the corner, is scoring one or two a game which is an excellent confidence builder. He’s that dangerous at the moment that he’s getting four chances a game. Those are the positives on what was a really disappointing game.”

Have to laugh to see ol' Billy Darwiche,
(St-George) can't stay away from the red cards.

Had him with our U20's back with the old Central Coast United FC in NSWPL, when he was pushing for first grade spot after leaving Bankstown i think? to join the Coast under former Socceroo, Grant Lee (now Coaching with Syd.Olympic).

We had a pre-season friendly against his old club Bankstown and they were after him from the kick-off. He took on just about every one of them tackle after tackle, the ref stopping continully with cautions and cards until it finally erupted in all in brawl.

Hillarously, the Men's Premier League were playing a game concurrently on the field next to the U20's at the same time, up at Blood-Tree Oval at The Mangrove Mountains home ground.

The First Grade boys, including one former Mariner - 'Ian Ferguson', all came to a complete standstill mid-game to stop and just watch the brawl unfold. The 1st grade boys just watched on for about 5 mins in amazement as Billy unleashed.

The U20's game had to be abandoned as Darwiche was going to kill everyone of his former teammates for the kicking he recieved. He was apparently pretty tidy with his fists as a renowned amatuer boxer and for other reasons.

Google the family name and you'll understand why.

Oh the days

ACADEMY WRAP: Mariners win 3-2 against Rams

academy_xuya985ubucw113zt0h1176v4.jpg

Academy take three points away from home
Monday, 20 June 2016-
@kanerunge1
The Central Coast Mariners triumphed in a tough away trip to the Macarthur Rams on Saturday night where they emerged as 3-2 winners thanks to goals by Buhagiar, Peterson & Buswell.
Macarthur Rams 2 (Ben Cornish 13’, Eros Bergamin 30’) v Central Coast Mariners 3 (Trent Buhagiar 1’, Ryan Peterson 6’, Cooper Buswell 53’)

The match at Lynwood Park couldn’t have started any better when the Academy took a 1-0 lead straight from the kick off when a pinpoint through ball from Adam Berry found Trent Buhagiar. Buhagiar made no mistake and finished calmly with a left foot strike to send the Academy ahead in the first minute.

Even though they were away from home, the Mariners took the game to the Rams and Ryan Peterson doubled their lead five minutes later to put his side 2-0 up in the 6th minute. Lachlan Wales whipped a cross onto head of Peterson who headed home off the crossbar.

The home side hit back in the 13th minute thanks to Ben Cornish who fired home a free kick, scoring the third goal of the match in a short period of time.

It was almost 2-2 in the 20th minute but it was Tom Heward-Belle who kept the visitors ahead making a full stretched dive to deny the Rams.

However the scores were level in the 31st minute when a goal line scrap fell to the feet of the Rams’ attacker inside the 18-yard-box. Eros Bergamin drove his shot low and it just made its way over the line, to level the game at 2-2.

The Academy had a good chance to go 3-2 ahead just before the break when Buhagiar found his way in behind the Rams’ defence. Buhagiar then squared his ball to an unmarked Cade Mapu. Mapu went found Berry who couldn't quite direct his shot on target from just outside the area.

The Academy took the lead in the 52nd minute when a cross from Christopher Hurley was met by substitute Cooper Buswell in the box. Buswell hit the cross on the volley sending it flying past the keeper and into the back of the net to restore the Academy's lead.

The Central Coast Mariners Academy nearly took a 4-2 lead in the 60th minute when a perfect diagonal long ball from centre back Steve Whyte found Wales. Wales bought the ball down and pulled the trigger sending his shot just wide of the Rams’ goal.

The Rams had a golden chance in the 75th minute when Eli Squillacoiti found himself one-on-one with Academy keeper Heward-Belle. Belle stood tall and saved the shot to keep the Academy ahead at 3-2.

In the 89th minute Heward-Belle was again the saviour, the Rams attacker won a header, which was bottom corner bound, only to be heroically saved by THB to secure all three points.

The Central Coast Mariners Academy will be back in action next weekend away from home against the Bankstown Berries at the Crest Athletic Centre.

ACADEMY WRAP- Mariners bag back to back wins:

academy_1wm99xgkd2uq917djrn5vuvo5v.jpg

The Central Coast Mariners Academy sealed back-to-back wins on Saturday night with a victory over the Bankstown Berries away from home thanks to goals by Cooper Buswell and Ryan Peterson.

Bankstown Berries 1 (Gavin Forbes 50’) v Central Coast Mariners 2 (Cooper Buswell 8’, Ryan Peterson 17’)

The Mariners travelled to Bankstown without striker Trent Buhagiar and defender Reece Papadamitrios due to suspension, which meant a reconfigured team saw youngster Cooper Buswell gain a starting berth after impressing last week, scoring a cracker in a 3-2 win over the Marcarthur Rams.

The Academy hit the lead after 8 minutes, with their second chance of the game. Winger Lachlan Wales whipped in a free kick, which was met by Buswell who made enough contact to push the ball over the line.

Away from home, the Mariners doubled their lead in the 17th minute thanks to some nice play down the left hand side. It was a well-worked combination play between Whyte and Hurley which saw the ball fall to an unmarked Ryan Peterson who hit his shot from 20 metres out into the bottom corner.

The Berries came out firing in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 49th minute thanks to a good ball in behind the Academy’s defence, which was initially cleared but ricocheted off the Mariners' defender which then fell to Berries striker Gavin Forbes who calmly finished past Heward-Belle.

The Mariners thought they made it 3-1 in the 63rd minute, when a free kick from Wales was curled into to the back post and met by centre back Nathan Verity who put the ball in the back of the net. The referee had different ideas though, ruling that Verity had fouled the Berries keeper in the process of winning the header.

The Academy came close to putting the game to bed in the 85th minute, with some great build up play. Cooper Buswell found captain Adam Berry who pulled the trigger from just outside the box, but couldn't quite put his shot on target.

A tad late but anyway...
Central Coast Mariners’ young-gun Trent Buhagiar has bagged 11 goals in 15 games for the Academy side but he’s not the only one firing.
You only need to take a look at the highlights from their most recent 3-2 win to see: a clinical pass from Adam Berry; a precision finish by Trent Buhagiar; accurate cross by Lachlan Wales; thumping header from Ryan Peterson and a cracking volley from Cooper Buswell.

The Hyundai A-League squad returned for training this week and there are a number of Academy boys that have been called up to train alongside the first team.

With the likes of Berry, Buhagiar and Tom Heward-Belle having already earned their maiden professional contracts for the upcoming season there’s no doubt the Academy pathway is playing a crucial role to their development and ensuring regular game time for the young lads.

It was always going to be a tough challenge for the youthful Central Coast Mariners’ outfit to mix it in the NSW NPL 2 against experienced campaigners but there are plenty of shining lights to come from the season so far.

Central Coast Mariners Academy Head Coach, Ben Cahn was happy with the result away from home at the weekend and re-iterated the importance of the Academy pathway for Hyundai A-League clubs.

“I’m really proud, it was an excellent win,” Cahn said. “We tried some new things system wise and Macarthur are a good side so to go down there and really outplay them to come away with three points is excellent.

“We’ve got a lot of talent and the league position doesn’t necessarily reflect what we have in terms of players coming through, we have been slightly naïve in defence but we are working very hard to improve the players game management and match awareness. There are a lot of individuals in there that I look at and think they’ve got a chance to go on and play A-League football.

“The biggest goals are to get as many players exposed to the first team environment as possible but at the same time as that it would be nice to secure some points, we’re only two points of fourth so it would be a nice touch to play some finals football.

“With the A-League Clubs all having academies in NPLs across the country, it's one of the best moves that could have been made, it means that young players who would have normally moved into a first team set up after a few NYL games now have a season of 26 senior football matches under their belt,” Cahn said.

Cahn also praised the attitude and hard work of Buhagiar.

“Trent has come on a long long way in the five months that I’ve known him, there were a lot of deficiencies in his game that he has worked long and hard to improve and you can see it,” Cahn said. “He’s not just scoring goals but he’s winning a lot of ball back, he’s a threat when we don’t have the ball because he’s so quick.

“He’s also becoming more intelligent and more aware and they are all things he needs to keep working on but there’s been a really evident improvement,” Cahn said.

The Central Coast Mariners Academy are away from home his weekend against the Bankstown Berries.
