FFA Cup action heats up in WA

FFA Cup action takes centre-stage in Western Australia this weekend, with the last eight clubs still in contention for the Round of 32 to do battle.

Six of those are NPL outfits while the two State League Division One teams dreaming of glory are Gwelup Croatia and Dianella White Eagles.

Dianella, who were one match from reaching the national stage last year, travel to Armadale on Saturday with coach Robbie Dunn putting his faith in what he admits will be “a makeshift side”.

“We had to draw an NPL side eventually and unfortunately they are in a good vein of form, so we know it’s going to be a tough one,” Dunn said.

“I’ve known Johnny (Armadale coach John O'Reilly) down the years through the other leagues. He’s a good coach and he’s got them firing.

“Unfortunately, we’ve lost a few players through injuries and blokes with jobs going up north, so it’s really rocked us in the last couple of weeks.

“All our injuries and losses have been in our back four. We’ve only got one bloke left out of the back four. So we’re just trying to put together a makeshift side to be honest and be competitive.”
Fixtures

Saturday, May 19

ECU Joondalup v Forrestfield United (ECU Joondalup Football Stadium, 3pm)

Armadale v Dianella White Eagles (Alfred Skeet Reserve, 3pm)

Floreat Athena v Perth SC (E&D Litis Stadium, 7pm)

Sunday, May 20

Gwelup Crotia v Subiaco (Croatian Sporting Complex, 2.30pm)

Saturday FFA Cup semi-final action in Tasmania

The race for the FFA Cup Round of 32 and Lakoseljac Cup trophy heats up on Saturday as the semi-finals take place in Tasmania.

Four clubs are left but only one can ultimately lift the trophy and advance to the Round of 32 stage of the FFA Cup.

South Hobart travel to Launceston City with a 3pm AEST kick-off at Buckby Land Rover Park.

Launceston currently top the National Premier Leagues ladder in Tasmania with 17 points from a possible 21.

South Hobart sit in fourth, six points behind the league leaders.

Meanwhile, Northern Rangers host Devonport at NTCA 2 with a 1pm kick-off.

Devonport sit second on the NPL ladder, with Northern Rangers down in sixth.

Final decided for FFA Cup spot in Tasmania

The finalists have been decided for Tasmania’s lone spot in the FFA Cup Round of 32 after the semi-finals of the Lakoseljac Cup on Saturday.

In the first semi-final it was Devonport Strikers who had too much class for Northern Rangers, prevailing 2-1 at the NTCA.

Miles Barnard opened the scoring for the Strikers inside the first minute, turning home Michael Holden’s cross.

They doubled their lead after the break with FFA Cup specialists Brayden Mann firing home and while the Rangers pulled one back late on through Nick Lanau-Atkinson, the Strikers held on for a deserved win.

“We were good today, but we could have been a lot better and we need to be better at killing offsides,” said Devonport skipper Mann in The Advocate newspaper.

“A lot of our goals are by design and we are noticing the opposition goals are coming from defection or lucky bounces.

“We are obviously stoked and excited to be in a cup final, but we know it is going to be tough and we are ready for it.”
There was an upset of sorts in the other semi-final as South Hobart overcame Launceston City 3-1 at Buckby Land Rover Park.

While Launceston currently lead the Tasmanian NPL, they were no match for South Hobart, who are six points and three places behind them in the league.

Goals to Nicholas Morton and a Renato De Vecchi Marins brace had South 3-0 after 73 minutes before Launceston got a consolation 12 minutes from time through Lindsay Millington.

Final preliminary round draw confirmed in WA

The draw for the final preliminary round of FFA Cup action in Western Australia was held on Tuesday with two blockbuster clashes to decide which clubs will qualify for the Round of 32.

Giant-killers Gwelup Croatia have been handed a home tie for their semi-final clash, drawn against NPL outfit Floreat Athena.

Gwelup needed extra-time on the weekend to get past Subiaco 2-1 and will be confident of toppling the NPL strugglers, who made the last four after a dramatic penalty-shootout victory over Perth SC.

First division Gwelup Croatia have taken two NPL WA scalps on their way to the last four – Cockburn City and Subiaco.
The other clash is an all NPL affair with Armadale to take on ECU Joondalup.

Both clubs scored five goals in their wins over the weekend to now sit just 90 minutes away from a spot in the Round of 32 and the chance to play on the national stage.

The winners of the two semi-final clashes in WA will be the state’s representatives in the Round of 32 and battle it out for the Football West Belt up. State Cup final.

The ties will take place on the public holiday of Monday, June 4.

Kick-off times are yet to be confirmed by Football West.

The fixtures in WA after Tuesday’s draw:

Gwelup Croatia v Floreat Athena

FFA Cup wrap: three more clubs edge closer to Round of 32

The race to the FFA Cup Round of 32 is heating up, with three more Preliminary Rounds matches played around Australia on Tuesday night.

From South Australia to Queensland and the Top End, three more teams took another giant step towards qualifying for a shot to play on the national stage.

Here's a wrap of the results around the country on Tuesday night.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

A late winner from Allan Welsh ensured NPL club Adelaide Comets edged past State League 1 outfit Cumberland United 3-2 after an enthralling clash at Adelaide Shores Football Centre.

Welsh struck in the 89th minute to complete his brace and secure passage to the final preliminary round fixture in SA.

It's there the Comets will face the winner of Wednesday night’s encounter between Modbury Jets and Croydon Kings at Coopers Stadium.

The Comets, who needed a penalty shootout victory to advance past Adelaide City last round, are currently fourth on the SA NPL table.
QUEENSLAND

A double from Dean Briggs guided Peninsula Power to a 4-0 victory over Ipswich in their fifth-round clash at Sutton Park.

Briggs was heavily involved throughout the contest and had a hand in laying on a quick-fire double for Sam Cronin before claiming a brace himself to give the Power an unassailable 4-0 lead at half-time.

The Redcliffe-based club will now take on NPL QLD’s Brisbane Strikers in their sixth round fixture next Tuesday, May 30 at AJ Kelly Park.
NORTHERN TERRITORY

Hellenic Athletic Club defeated University Azzuri 2-0 in their round five fixture at Darwin Football Stadium.

Hellenic face Palmerston Rovers at the same venue in round six on Tuesday, June 5.

Confirmed: Round 7 draw complete in NSW
The five representatives in the Round of 32 from Football NSW will be decided next week, with the draw for the final preliminary round conducted on Friday.

The fairytale story of the preliminary rounds - Football South Coast’s Tarrawanna Blueys – have been handed a home tie against NPL outfit Hakoah Sydney City East.

The Blueys started their FFA Cup journey back in March and have come through four sudden-death clashes to sit within 90 minutes of the national stage.
And what a story it would be should the Blueys advance, with the club to become the first association club to reach the Round of 32 if they can overcome Gavin Rae’s troops.

Elsewhere, it’s a top of the NPL NSW Men’s table clash between Sydney Olympic and APIA Leichhardt.

The other all NPL encounter sees Rockdale City Suns entertain last year’s quarter-finalists Blacktown City.

Blacktown has never missed a spot in the Round of 32 and will fancy their chances of making it for a fifth straight year.

The other two matches see Hills United host Bonnyrigg White Eagles, while NPL 2 side GHFA Spirit FC will hope that they can spring an upset by shocking NPL side Marconi Stallions in Sydney’s South West.

All matches will be played on Wednesday night, May 30.

FFA Cup Round 7 Preliminary Fixtures

  • Sydney Olympic v APIA Leichhardt Tigers
  • Tarrawanna Blueys v Hakoah Sydney City East

Three FFA Cup Round of 32 spots on the line in Victoria
The final three Victorian representatives for the FFA Cup Round of 32 will be decided this week with the final Round 7 Preliminary Round matches to be played.

It all kicks off on Tuesday night as NPL highflyers Avondale FC take on Richmond at Paisley Park in Altona.

READ: Bentleigh seal FFA Cup Round of 32 berth

Avondale is currently second on the NPL ladder having lost just once all season and have striker Liam Boland – a player who loves this competition – in fantastic form.

They’ll start heavy favourites for the clash with the State League Division 1 South East outfit, who have been one of the giant-killers of the competition in Victoria.

The match, which will be live streamed on FFV Facebook and FFV YouTube, kicks off at 7.45pm.

There are two NPL v NPL2 clashes on Wednesday night.

At JL Murphy Reserve in Port Melbourne, it’s the Sharks hosting Moreland Zebras.

And NPL2 side Altona Magic hosts Northcote City FC at Paisley Park.

Both matches on Wednesday night kick-off at 7.30pm and are also being live streamed on FFV Facebook and FFV YouTube.

Anything can happen in the FFA Cup, and with a precious place in the Round of 32 up for grabs, there should be three hard-fought contests to look forward to this week.

As 2017 NPL National Champion, Heidelberg United has already qualified for the FFA Cup National Round of 32.

Heidelberg will join Bentleigh Greens – who advanced last week – and this week’s three winners as the five Victorian entrants into the National Round of 32 draw.

The FFA Cup 2018 Final Rounds format is set for significant changes after the match schedule for the nation-wide knock-out competition was released by Football Federation Australia on Monday.

The Round of 32 fixtures will be played over four match nights (Tuesday or Wednesday) between 24 July and 8 August (four matches per night).

The Round of 16 to be played on two match nights between 21 August and 29 August.

The Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, and Cup Final match dates have been adjusted for the fifth iteration of the FFA Cup in a bid to support the continued growth of the Australia-wide knockout.

The Quarter Finals – which will be played on two match nights between 18 September and 26 September – have been shifted from last year to avoid a crossover with Member Federation National Premier Leagues (NPL) Grand Finals, as well as September’s FIFA International Window.

The FFA Cup Final 2018 will be played in October for the first time, with the evening of Wednesday, 31 October locked in for the competition’s showpiece.

The draw for the Round of 32 of the FFA Cup 2018 will be conducted LIVE on FOX SPORTS on Tuesday, 26 June 2018 in the lead up to the Caltex Socceroos’ third Group C match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ against Peru. The exact time of the draw will be released in the coming weeks.

The Round of 32 of the FFA Cup 2018 will contain the ten Hyundai A-League clubs, the 2017 NPL Champion (Heidelberg United from Victoria), as well as 21 clubs from Member Federations from across Australia.

As engagement with the FFA Cup continues to grow, FFA can confirm that a record 761 clubs entered the FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds, which will grow to 772 clubs when the ten Hyundai A-League clubs, as well as Heidelberg United, join the competition.

NSW clubs eye ticket to FFA Cup Round of 32

History could be made in the FFA Cup on Wednesday night with a team from the South Coast of NSW aiming to become the first association club to qualify for the Round of 32.

In what will be a huge occasion at Hooka Creek Park, giant-killers Tarrawanna Blueys will find themselves thrust onto the national stage if they can beat NPL outfit Hakoah Sydney City East.

The Blueys have been the fairytale story of the preliminary rounds in NSW, defeating Sydney North West FC, Macarthur Rams, UNSW and the Kirrawee Kangaroos to get to this stage.
But they’ll need to produce one more massive performance to get past Gavin Rae’s Hakoah, who reached the last 16 of the tournament in 2017.

The Tarrawanna v Hakoah clash in one of five big games in NSW on Wednesday night which will decide the state’s representatives in the Round of 32.

Elsewhere, it’s the NPL’s top-two doing battle at Belmore Sports Ground as league-leaders Sydney Olympic host APIA Leichhardt.

Both sides suffered shock defeats in the NPL over the weekend and will be keen to bounce back to advance to the Round of 32.

There is another all-NPL affair at Illinden Sports Centre as Rockdale City Suns host FFA Cup specialists Blacktown City.

The Demons have made the Round of 32 every year of the competition and defeated Hyundai A-League outfit Central Coast Mariners last year.
The other games see Bonnyrigg White Eagles travel to NPL2 side Hills United, while Marconi Stallions will be at home against NPL2 opposition in GHFA Spirit.

All matches kick off at 7.30pm.

NSW Final Preliminary Round Fixtures

  • Sydney Olympic v APIA Leichhardt Tigers – Belmore Sports Ground
  • Tarrawanna Blueys v Hakoah Sydney City East – Hooka Creek Park
  • Hills United v Bonnyrigg White Eagles FC – Valentine Sports Park 2
  • Rockdale City Suns v Blacktown City – Illinden Sports Centre
  • Marconi Stallions v GHFA Spirit – Marconi Stadium

Peninsula Power one step closer to Round of 32
Queensland club Peninsula Power is one step closer to booking their ticket to the FFA Cup Round of 32 for the second time.

They did it in style too, the second-tier side from Redcliffe knocking off last year’s NPL QLD premiers Brisbane Strikers 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Two goals in the first-half did much of the damage, and they came from Power making the most of their set-piece opportunities.

Ramon Close opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a goal from a corner, and Richard Hurlin doubled Power’s advantage from the free kick in the 36th minute.

Shaun Feuerriegel tied things up with a goal of his own in the 76th minute to stretch Power’s unbeaten run to 17 games.
The win sets up a mouth-watering seventh round clash between Power and Lions FC, who currently sit fourth in the NPL QLD.

Triumph in that clash, set down for the June long weekend, would see Power through to the Round of 32 for the second time.

NSW wrap: Five clubs qualify for Round of 32

Five clubs from NSW have booked their spot in the FFA Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday night.

APIA Leichhardt, Marconi Stallions, Bonnyrigg White Eagles, Hakoah Sydney City East and Rockdale City Suns all made it through to the national stage.

APIA ran out 3-0 winners over a hapless Sydney Olympic to secure back-to-back Round of 32 berths.

Marconi and Bonnyrigg faced tougher opposition, despite playing sides in lower divisions.

Hills United put up a solid fight against Bonnyrigg, while GHFA Spirit showed, well, plenty of spirit against Marconi.

However, both top-tier sides were able to show their class and advance with 2-1 wins.

Hakoah also played weaker opposition in the Tarrawanna Blueys, and the South Coast side were unable to continue their fairytale run, with Hakoah sealing a 4-0 win.

All the drama was in Rockdale, however, with the Suns securing a dramatic late win.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, it looked like Blacktown were going to continue their run of reaching the Final Rounds of the FFA Cup.

But Rockdale had other ideas, levelling the scores at 2-2 in the 81st minute.

And it was not until the 91st minute that they took the lead in the match for the first time, converting a penalty to book their spot in the Round of 32.

The draw for the Round of 32 will take place on Tuesday, 26 June and will be broadcast on FOX SPORTS.
