The Mariners went down 3-1 to Brisbane Roar tonight
Saturday, 26 September 2015-
@CCMariners
Brisbane Roar 3 (Brown 51’, Petratos 59’, Borrello 83’) Central Coast Mariners 1 (Fitzgerald 13’)
The Central Coast Mariners have gone down 3-1 to the Brisbane Roar in their last hit-out of the Hyundai A-League pre-season at Sunshine Coast Stadium, Kawana.

Nick Fitzgerald opened the scoring for the Central Coast in the 13th minute with a cracking goal from 20 yards after a sustained period of pressure for the Mariners.

However three second-half goals to Brisbane through Corey Brown, Dimitri Petratos and Brandon Borrello sealed the victory for the Roar.

Despite the result, the Mariners put in a strong performance at Sunshine Coast Stadium, creating a number of chances and applying forward pressure throughout the match.

A solid first half saw the Mariners press high up the field with Fabio Ferreira and Mitch Austin sending in a flurry of crosses that caused danger for the Brisbane defence.

Towards the end of the half, a rough knock to the left knee led to stand-in skipper Josh Rose being subbed out as a precaution, however the defender should be fine to take the field in Round 1.

Roy O’Donovan took the armband in Rose’s absence.

In the second-half, the momentum swung Brisbane’s way with two goals in 10 minutes through Brown and Petratos respectively.

In response to going a goal down, the Mariners stepped the attack up a notch, pushing an extra player forward and nearly equalising through substitute Dan Heffernan.

However against the run of play in the 83rd minute, Brisbane found the sealer when Brandon Borrello got on the end of a measured Petratos through ball.

The Mariners however will take many positives from the match, with the encounter allowing a chance for many players to get minutes into their legs before the Hyundai A-League Season kicks off.

The Central Coast Mariners will now shift their focus towards their Hyundai A-League Round 1 encounter with the Perth Glory on October 10 at Central Coast Stadium.

GOALS:

13’ FITZGERALD GOAL: After a string of Mariners corners and building the pressure in the front third, Nick Fitzgerald pounced on the loose ball outside the box and fired a cracking shot at goal from 20 yards out.

51’ BROWN GOAL: Shortly after the break, Brisbane Roar’s Corey Brown struck the back of the net to level scores at 1-1.

59’ PETRATOS GOAL: Thomas Broich glides 50 metres across the pitch, where he finds an unmarked Dimitri Petratos, with the sub making no mistake in the box.

83’ BORRELLO GOAL: Brandon Borrello found himself on the end of a well measured through ball from Dimitri Petratos and slotted a goal beyond Liam Reddy’s reach.

Walmsley’s words:

“We were outstanding tonight, forget the score line for a moment. There were players that played themselves into contention for the game against Perth. We created numerous chances, we got in behind them.

“Fabio Ferreira and Mitch Austin got a lot of crosses in.

“Roy O’Donovan led the forward line brilliantly. Caceres, he was everywhere tonight in midfield and Poscoliero and Storm Roux were very prominent.

“When they went 2-1 up, credit to the boys, the Mariners came back into the game, we pushed an extra man forward, brought Dan Heffernanon on, we could’ve equalised a number of times and they scored another one on the break.

“In terms of performance, we’ll get a lot of results playing the way we played tonight, home and away.

“We’ve got things to work on, there’s no doubt this team has plenty of improving to do. But if we play like that at home against Perth on the 10th of October, then we’re going to do very well.

1.o up against Brissy at half time is very exciting.

Shipping 3 goals in the second half and losing is worrying.

TW doesn't appear to have been taking these friendlies too seriously and has been using them to gauge the fringe players.

We can only hope that he now knows his favoured starting 11 and team set up.

Beating Scum and the 2 Sydney teams was great early in the pre-season. Losing to the Scummers and Brisbane in our final hit outs is worrying.

As with "most" teams undergoing a system change it takes an extentded period of time to get a full 90 minutes at this increased level and remember Ange took 3/4 of a season with Brisbane to get the system right along with the increased exertion level, same with Gombau at Adelaide.
You will notice that the period in the game is where the goals are scored are similar (50 min to 65 min) That appears to be a mind set problem that will be solved.

can't wait for the 10th

I suspect we'll lose a few we 'should' have won this season, but I won't mind if we're having a crack and building towards something.

we didn't do a good job of having a go last season, that's what turned my stomach.

i think the idea that the team will get better as the season progresses is accurate

Walmsley seemed pretty positive about the hit out which is a good sign. unlike Mossy who used to say it was a great game when we were dismal TW gives a decent analysis and is pretty open about tactics and strategy so at this point I trust his words

FOOTBALL:
It wasn't the ideal return to the Sunshine Coast for Central Coast Mariners coach Tony Walmsley as his side went down 3-1 to the Brisbane Roar at Kawana on Saturday night.
But despite the score line, Walmsley was satisfied with where his team is positioned coming into the Hyundai A-League, which starts on October 8.
"I got a lot out of tonight - it was a big step up for us in terms of output," he said.
"We had some good performances from some players who are trying to cement their spot int the team for round.
"We created a lot of chances.
"We gave a soft-ish goal away for the first one, the second one we thought our boy was fouled on the wing and they scored on the counter
"Heffernan had a header off the bench and it could have been 2-2 (so) we're not too concerned about that (the result).
"In terms of the A-leauge, we're ready to go."
The Mariners were gallant in the dying minutes, whipping crosses into the box right to the last minute of extra time, but couldn't find a second goal.
This was the sixth and last preseason friendly for the Mariners with one last interclub match and a short break before the start of the A-League season.
Walmsley said he wouldn't leave the Coast with a sour taste in his mouth.
"I've worked here (Sunshine Coast) before many years ago as director of coaching for this region (and) it was good to be back," he said.
"It's a great crowd and thanks to the roar for hosting us, the roar and the mariners have had 10 year history to this point
"I'm sure people are going to see after tonight that that's going to continue into season 11.
"We've played six teams and we've got a good idea of where we're at now, it's about freshness now … lead(ing) in to the first game."
The Mariners started the Hyundai A-League preseason warm-up the stronger of the two teams, forcing errors from the Roar, before snatching the opening goal of the game.
But it was all downhill traffic after they lost stand-in captain Josh Rose to a slight medial knee strain just before half time.
Brisbane Roar boss John Aloisi said the Mariners are a tricky team to play and won't be taking them lightly when they meet in the regular season.
"Look they've got some dangerous boys (and) they play a risky game at times, because they leave only one-on-one at the back, and we knew they were going to do that," he said.
"Sometimes when you're attacking they leave three or four up front so they can catch you quickly on the counter and we knew that.
"(They're) a team that can hurt you."

Anyone know did Posco start at DM with no Monty, Liam Rose and McGing there? When Rosey went off in the first half did Posco go into the LB role and Tricky into DM? Looks like we were a bit light in those areas.

The team sheet had Ascroft at DM. I assume when Josh went off and Trifiro on that Bosnar went to LB and Ascroft dropped back to CB. Tricky and Caceres can both play DM and AM.

This is just going off the twitter feed.

One more hit-out an 11 v 11 at the fan day.

A bit short on numbers with Berry and Rose not available with NT duty and Kalik MIA suspected injured. 3 CMs gone.

Given who is left maybe 2 4-4-2 teams with a couple of youngsters in Lachlan Wales and Trent Buhagiar given a run.

What a weird pre-season. Even before the CWC games I'd watched us play and before each season. This season with no open games on the Coast or even Sydney I haven't had a chance to get my off-season Mariners rush.

I'm keen to see the boys play tomorrow even if it is an intra-club game.:shoutclap:
