Thoughts from seeing it live.
They had 1 chance and took it, we took none of ours.
Staj got the subs wrong. Bouman was honking. Slow, lazy and he was a handbrake on us.
Lewis F Miller isnt good. Sorry.
When Niz went off we were rubbish.
DDS ripping in and the pile on to Ziggy was brilliant.what a whiny little c**t he is
As above, they had quality on the bench, we dont.
Enjoyed the game immensly and as a mid table side, we will be fine

Also, I felt so sorry for Bernie. He is done. Cant turn, cant do anything but try to jog in a straight line. Once good footballer heading for the scrapheap

Seemed to lose all momentum and go forward when our subs were introduced. In saying that, I feel we were good enough to get at least a point of out that.

Also, f**k the Wanderers fans. You only sing when you're winning.
Strange all the comments. I thought Smylie was excellent - full of enthusiasm and caused some headaches. Urena only got one touch. Miller looked a real mixed bag. Bouman did some good things but couldn't create enough to have an impact.

We were very close to winning that game and definitely at least worth a point. Losing games like that always really sucks. And I hate WSW. But for mine it also confirms we're a very decent side. We're tough and determined in the mids and at the back and play some good football. But we switch the ball too slowly going forward and must take our chances. Let's hope Urena has the ability to score regularly and I think we'll have an enjoyable season.

Oh and booing Ziggy was a lot of fun. :innocent:

Although it was an unlucky goal, we can't leave attackers unmarked in the box while we gawp at them. Birraz gave Miller a serve for the same thing in our last game. He's also turned out to be very predictable with his attempts to go past defenders. I like the kid but if he keeps playing half asleep he's gonna be a bench warmer.

Niz was outstanding, here's a kid that doesn't want to lose his spot to anyone.

DDS also played well but still gave the ball away a few times and ran down ratholes to nothing. He's improving but can't let those old bad habits slip back in. Move the ball quickly don't dribble into dead ends being a fancy pants.

Rowles was solid and continues to improve.

Young kids up front are bound to blow hot and cold. We're still missing a seasoned striker.

Miller has looked one-dimensional and lazy this season in the limited time we have seen him. If Nigro if off - who can cover? Hall?

I think we need to have Nizzy on the field at all times unless injured. He went off and our possession disappeared. I would have taken Simon off rather than Kuol. He just looked like a red card waiting to happen - especially with the ref only looking at one team. Hopefully Urena when fit will add sone quailty up front because we should have been in front.

His passing completion was 93% tonight which is as high as it gets in an A-League player. DDS was one of our best players tonight and was more direct and hungry than I have seen him in a long time.

I yearn for the DDS of a few years ago that totally dominated Wellington and then Perth in consecutive games for us. He is not there yet but games like tonight and he will be soon.

I feel weird praising DDS and Clisby on this forum on the one night.

We played pretty well and didn't deserve to lose. Miller had a Barry Crocker and his defending on the goal was so Mariners 18, 19 and 20. Having said that he is clearly a good prospect. The lack of a defensive leader screaming at him to do is job was apparent.

Niz, DDS, Tonyik, Stens, Rowles and even Matty Simon were very good. With the 3 new boys to come in it will be us able to bring quality off the bench
Agree with all except my jury is still out on Miller making it to a decent level. His decision making still seems wanting to me. I see him as a centre back, with reasonable technique and a frame to build some strength around. I don't think he has the mobility or athleticism to be a full back.
Too many times has he failed to get back and defend.

Something else which I forgot to mention last night. How bloody good is Nissy. Lock that fella up long term.
Nizzy is an old fashioned, honest hard worker with a huge skill set. The sort of player we want.
Mom for me.
The one touch passing and quick moves with Nizzy, DDS, Stenz, Olli and even Matti were snippets to behold and at a level we could only dream about last year. It all slowed down to mush when Miller and co came on but the potential is there for some fantastic performances and hopefully more three pointers this year.
For me there was too much wasted energy and (unprofessional) attention applied to Ziggy, who has the last laugh.
I thought we were unlucky but for the most part it was very entertaining.
And only 2 days wait now. Bring on Sydney!

My initial thoughts on tonight (without having watched the game back on TV) is that we fell into the trap of pitching a fight, which caused us to lose focus on our game plan. At times in the first half it resembled a basketball game and I would be pretty confident that wasn’t how Staj wanted the boys to play. Kuol was clearly pulled because of his yellow, when at least the same level concern (if not more) must surely have been warranted for Simmo.

Smylie had little or no impact on the second half from where I sat and so if Staj was prepared to gamble on Simon staying out there, he should have done the same with Kuol, as they were both causing the Wanderers backline some problems.

As others have said, the subs upset out momentum but DDS and Nizzy did look gassed to me, so their replacement was arguably warranted, albeit perhaps 10 minutes earlier (and therefore before their goal).

On reflection, I feel that some of the boys paid too much attention to the Ziggy situation instead of sticking to the game plan of controlling the tempo of the game and thus frustrating the Wanderers. Up until their breakaway goal, this game had 0-0 written all over it, as we didn’t honestly look like scoring tonight.

The boys will need to be better at controlling their emotions on Friday, or it will likely be another tough night.
Interesting because I thought the opposite. It set the tone. We are a physical team now. We were biting at their heels for 3/4 of the game and really troubled them. We won every physical contest. There was only ever WSW players on the ground. Had Nizzie scored which his first attempt was DDS weak we would have won imo. It’s the most fight I have seen from the team in a long time. Once we get our attack working we will be a decent side. It’s just all about defense for a little while.
i loved the fight. Did they take it to far. No only Mat but he does that anytime and i am feeling you won’t see as much of him soon. He will be back to SFC Matt to kill the game in a couple of weeks

Can’t believe anybody is questioning the ref Was very much our way until the goal. Matt got away with a soft but still knees kick thing on Zig. Had got baccas early without yellows. He could easily have been off after 30mins

we kicked the shit out of Ziggy and got away with most.
Toniyk caught baccas from behind and ref said fair tackle. We played to the whistle and were allowed to be physical. We got a heap of turnovers from that play. The only gripe was a free kick he let go because he played on but Olli sprayed the pass. He let that go but late let WSW do the same and then pulled it back when they stuffed it. That was my only time I thought he got us.

I wonder if the Koul sub was more about SFC game as well. We have short turnaround after 2 weeks off. Need to be careful so go with one for a bit longer as Unerna obviously not ready yet

You can see why we play the way we do. That tight defense of two blocks has been extremely impressive in fixing our defensive issues. Defensively Clisby and Rowles have been alot better.
Nigro is also playing well as the RB. Big loss when he went off. Our hustle to get back has also been key and impressive. The couple of times the play broke we got caught and you can see how weak we are in broken play.
I thought Clisby was unlucky on the goal. He took the right option. Headed away from goal but should have got to the ball after it to clear it. Miller got caught really badly and because we are so much tighter it was really obvious. There was one break WSW made and i saw Olli directing the defense to stay and point out each run. Was really good and we shut down the break
