Reading through the friendlies of the last few weeks I know people have mentioned the other teams are coming back to our level however I’m not so sure they have dropped much to be honest. Whilst there are more youngsters most teams have a really good experienced spine with most having at least 4 visa players with more arrivals due over the next few weeks. Milicic states he is receiving so many expressions of interest from overseas he cannot view them all. So we have a young side which I’m ok with however if we do not bring in some more experience I’m afraid we will be well below everyone again. Time is running out and Milicic’s comments don’t seem to indicate waiting until the January window is essential. Our lack of interest in signing new experienced players is a major concern.

I agree, we are running short of time for a foreign signing to arrive, quarantine and join the squad and get any meaningful time on the pitch before the season commences. While the Jan window may provide better opportunities and perhaps at a better price for the club, surely that approach leaves us playing catch up with combinations etc. I for one would have liked to see Jair with us for the full offseason last year and not join well into the season proper (I get there might be reasons for that) as it’s hard to join an established squad, get fit and make a significant impact early unless the player is pretty special (fitness might not be an issue for a jan transfer if the player has been getting game time at prev club) If we want a decent (or preferably quality) striker upfront surely that player needs time to blend with the squad and not join in what appears to be a desperate move half way through the season. Thoughts anyone?

If a OS visa player is currently contracted to a professional European club we can't sign them to January. OS uncontracted players are often coming back from injury. Testing their fitness is probably quite problematic at the moment. There are however, a number of potential visa players such as Tasuku Sekiya playing the NPL leagues around Australia,

And then of course we have a limited budget.

I'm not sure that we will sign further visa players, but the European window doesn't open until January. and unless we wait until more people become free agents. The K League finishes at the end of this month, the MLS 13/12 and the J League on 19/12. some of their lower league have finished already.

If we do sign further visa players I doubt we will until some Leagues finish and more free agents become available.

No doubt O/s player options are narrowing and I'd love to hear of more signings in the next week or so. But it is vital we get the last few signings right so I prefer this cautious approach.

I am happy with all signings so far, I think they improve our squad. But would prefer a quality, senior CB ala PVZ, a LB, and of course a proven striker.

Striker is the hardest, look at how many times Adelaide have dipped into the OS market and found on paper a good striker only for them not to deliver.

I wonder what current lb plans are, unfortunately Clisby hasn't worked out.

Read the article in the SMH about how the pandemic has created more options than normal for the A League. The Bulls have just picked up two (what appear) quality Spanish players mostly because they see Australia as a safe place for their young families at the moment. Therefore I’m not reading into having to wait until January. If we were keen their seems to be plenty of options, problem is I don’t think we are keen. I’ve come to realise silence from the club only means one thing and Staj in his last interview did not even slightly hint to any more experienced players coming other than having Olli, Ziggy and Simon. So we are weaker this year than last in my opinion. Didn’t get to watch the U23’s but no one has really talked up Bouman and whilst he started seemed he was pulled at half time against the Smurf’s and didn’t start the second game.

Etxebarria, while a quality player at 33 seems to have a few knee and hamstring problems. Susaeta played for six months with Melb City and didn't seem to set the world on fire.

I think we could sign someone on loan from an English club.
The transfer window closed on 5th October. 23rd October Abu Ogogo signed on loan with a club from Bristol Rovers.
So therefore I presume it would be possible for us to get someone on loan.
However it would probably be a player who's not in favour and so wouldn't have played much.

But then again I could be wrong.

Tomi Juric is now available and said an aleague return is a possibility, I think he would be good for us to sign as a striker, especially if there is limited options, but I think he would likely go to a club like Sydney or WSW again before us, I think he is worth the club trying to sign because he wants regular first team football which we can give him,

I would be really wary of signing him, the worry being he will want far more than he’s necessarily worth and his attitude might be too cool for school.

At a certain point the silence on multiple fronts (signing rumours and take over rumours) becomes absolutely frightening. Even the jets already have a more firm interest from new owners. Bringing Ollie back is massive for me. I had hoped it would start a trend and whilst I’m very happy with the few youth promotions it does seem more likely we won’t be getting another Ollie calibre senior player.

The Jets ownership situation has been pretty poorly managed tbh. The last 2 prospective owners that, according to the media, were all but done deals, fell through - and it looks like the latest one (which was also reported as being close to complete) could be going the same way. Sometimes it pays to keep quiet until the deal is done and I can understand the club playing their cards close to their chest

This. We’re very lucky to have a good level of transparency and communication from Shaun but the reality is a lot of things are commercial in confidence or sensitive situations. There’s a lot of things he can’t give us an answer on if he wants to keep his job.

Many years ago, before some here were born, there was a new national football competition begun called the A League.
There were 8 licences available. Six licences were awarded to bids from capital cities. One went to the biggest city in Australia with a great football heritage. The eighth licence was a problem. They were never going to award a second licence to either Sydney or Melbourne for fear of showing favouritism. They were never going to award it to one of the stronger NSL contestants because ethnic football was to be stamped out.
With a distinct lack of optimism the eighth licence was awarded to the "runt of the litter", a club built on a failed NPL venture and became the only truly regional club, the Central Coast Mariners.
In that first season no one gave the Club a chance. The rest is history.

I refuse to go into the start of a season without hope.
We are still alive!!!

I note the coincidence that the Jets announcement of the latest new owners was when their Memberships went on sale.

I know its only pre-season but today's 2-3 loss to Macarthur is pretty concerning. We played close to what is our full strength side with a number of youth players. Goals were scored by Smylie and Tongyik. Not overly encouraging and no exciting new triallists or potential signings to be seen. Looks like we will be losing another of our Youth players this week - just hope that the club has got him signed and it is a loan as he has never even been on a NYL development contract.
