We will be lucky to even get him here for the trial.

Has the feel of we worked hard for months, he has said its an option but I’m choosing between that and something else.

We’ve let the cat out of the bag to get exposure but the contract isn’t even signed for a trial
And I highly doubt will

Someone came up with Magic Mike or Magic Mike Mulvey - it may have been Recky. Shorthand it became MMM

Ahhh ok. Taa.

Magic/Messiah ??
- The guy hasn't even fielded a starting 11 in a non- competive game yet !!
..... think both monikers are a bit undeserved as of yet ... just saying.

a bit confusing perhaps also for some forum newbies &/or casual peruser's
- what with MC, MM, now MMM, DDS & then there's TBT (guarantee a newbie wouldnt have a clue on ThatBoyTrent)

.... have even recently seen NM , which threw me for a sec, with being so used to just seeing 'Monty' typed for years on here.

We'll need a glossary look-up table soon enough :D

We need both. We could sign someone that no-one has ever heard of, start winning some games and come in 6th. But that doesnt mean that anyone would be there to see it, other than the truly rusted on fans who were still turning up at the end of last season. We need something to ignite crowd numbers, which Bolt would do, but we need to have something to keep them there - which winning would do. The last few season have done an immense amount of damage to the teams brand within the general public.

Getting both of those things is the ultimate, and if he is capable of playing a cameo role, while an improved squad can create the base for winning enough games to make the finals, I think it goes a very very long way to digging us out of the hole we are in.

Increased sponsors, increased awareness, increased crowds and increased memberships.

And nowhere has it been said that exploring this idea has had any impact on trial games ( I agree with you that we should be having some by now, but I cant see that the Bolt situation has had any effect on that), and I cant see that Monty and MMM would be putting all quality recruiting on hold to see if this guy is going to be our saving grace. AT BEST he will be an impact sub - I dont think anyone would be silly enough to expect any more than that - so if we can have him fill the Buhagier gap, and sell out every stadium he goes to for a year, then I think its a massive win.

I had a call from memberships on Monday afternoon, asking if I would be renewing. I said I was waiting to see how the recruiting finished, as I wanted to be confident the management were going to be taking this seriously before I spent my heard earned on a membership again. Would signing a 35 year old washed up EPL striker convince me? Maybe... would signing a beat up Dutch striker who has been injured for a year convince me?? Probably not. Would signing Usain Bolt convince me?? Absol-bloody-lutely.
I think it's very fair to say that this whole shit show has removed a pre season. It's either that or we have written the FFA Cup off. Either one is just as bad as the other. You decide which way the club has f**ked us

Wholeheartedly agree with the first 3 points. :headbutt:

How many times have you heard or read a player or coach stating that:

"missing out on being with the rest of the team for pre-season or part thereof (injured, late to sign-on etc) really affected my/his season".

Some of our opposing HAL clubs have players that have 4 games + training in their legs already.

Independent Media Monitoring Report -

In 30 hours - 130 million people read the Usain Bolt story around the World.
Media Value - if CCM FC were to pay for the media generated in one day yesterday it would have cost $ 4.5 million.

Just a hunch. Put your PR hat on.

If you had him you’d wait till it was signed or it’s a play to put pressure on him.
Also could be a tactic to flush something out of his agent or FFA if you want to take that angle

Sounds very David Beckhamy

If you don’t value respect ............ we have nothing to lose. My problem is that the “we” is the royal plural and that includes me.

Have you not looked at the videos. He plays like a poor man’s trent buhagiar.

As advertising for the coe it is a master stroke .......... but for the team ???? it is a new low. :(:(:(
Im prepared to give the guy a go,then leave up to MM to decide if he is good enough

Mike and Shaun would have to be off their tree if they've let this mess up our pre season.

Big Al, I'd had the same thoughts, but it was the length of time Sean has been speaking with Bolt's team and Phelan's involvement that makes me believe this is quite different to the Beckham scenario.

Regardless ....... it still has messed up our pre-season !

I never thought I would agree for Peter Fitzsimmons. https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer...it-ain-t-going-to-happen-20180718-p4zs92.html

I just can’t my head around the priorities of the club.
- our squad is not yet complete
- the already assembled squad is insufficient
- our preseason is not as developed as other clubs.
- we seem to be going to the FFA Cup game very unprepared.

This will not end well in the long term. If I wanted this tacky stuff then I would watch AFL or BBL.

I want to follow a football club again.

He's entitled to his opinion but his only salient point is the one about pattern recognition / repetition. Rest is just a boring hit piece.

"I just can’t my head around the priorities of the club."

It's simple. They want to capitalise on Usain's profile, but have stated will only do it if he can play. So priorities are to grow, make money, and recruit players who can assist our upcoming season.

Now I get people are worried that's not Bolt. BUT, we're only talking about one player. For a TRIAL. We take risks on multiple unproven juniors every bloody year. You evaluate risks by balancing their potential upside against the worse case. There is a worse case version of this like anything, but there is a far far greater upside than almost any other signing we could make at this stage in our fortunes to weigh against it. It's genuinely outside the box in a fascinating way that could be anything if people are honest. But like Rowdy said in another post, to come good, we will need the stars to align a bit.

Bottom line, no one knows whats what yet. Certainly not Fitzsimmons. That's what TRIALS, are for. Evaluating so you can make a good decision. Club is proceeding wisely here. Trialing, being clear skill level must be there etc. What more can people want. Refuse to trial Bolt on principle? Considering his unique background, that would be a shit principle if you ask me. I don't see Dortmund as a circus for trialling him.

"- our squad is not yet complete"
  • Agreed, but all know it, and no doubt they're working on it. New Bolt sponsor money could make a big difference to what those final key signings look like.
"- the already assembled squad is insufficient"

Ok, again agreed. But this is really just the same point. You're typically going to be insufficient, until you're complete. Once we're complete, is the time to gauge how insufficient we may or may not be.

"- our preseason is not as developed as other clubs. "

No reason to believe Bolt is having any effect on our preseason plans whatsoever.
I don't think we know a great deal about what our pre season looks like. Players are training, Mulvey is purported to be a good task master and believes in hard work. We're going off some other teams have announced the games they have lined up from all I can tell?

I'd say DeSilva is a thorn in our side. But I'm sure they're just getting on with it. Be fools not to be. And I don't think they're even remotely fools. Mulvey and Monty MUST and WILL have a plan. I don't think they think they can have a good season without preparing for it. They're not numpties. Not sure why people are starting to worry at this yet and making these assumptions.

- we seem to be going to the FFA Cup game very unprepared. "

Again "seem" is the operative word. But this may be true in so far as no full pre season games - though I'm sure they will be playing behind closed doors. I want us to come good and these guys are professional footballers so I'm sure they will want to get out there and win, But truth is, AU are rightfully favourites to beat us and we need to be focused on the season much more than the cup.

"This will not end well in the long term."

Sorry MB, but you're not an oracle mate.

"If I wanted this tacky stuff then I would watch AFL or BBL."

I don't find one of histories greatest athletes trying to realise his other boyhood dream, tacky. Find it sad that some of the media are enjoying degrading it this way. If Bolt was doing it for a laugh, or with causal arrogance, I'd be 100% with you. But that's not at all how he's come across or what he he's been saying or the club.

"I want to follow a football club again."

Madness that a trial of one would be player, regardless of their profile, should conflate to us not being a "football club".

Sorry, but that ones just total bollocks. We are a football club, we've just been playing shit football for a few years, End of. Someone will always spoon. Just like in all the other season when it wasn't us.

I understand your point of view, but I feel you have largely missed mine. All good, different opinions and all that. It’s good to see people exited by this, but I have been following football in this country for 25yrs now and I am a foundation member; I know when I see the mangement of a football club in this country priotising things other than football. We have all iiseen this from us for years. This circus will devalue the Mariners and the a-league long term. Let’s all enjoy the sunshine and skittles for the moment, I guess.

If the club is waiting for bolt sponsorship money to complete the squad then we may as well fold today.

What a f**king shambles.

When the only positive end result is money for the club then how is it not a gimmick?
There is no possible way for it to be a positive result on the field.
We need desperately need determined quality pro’s.

Not “really passionate and determined” wannabe pro’s who can barely kick a f**king ball with any kind of technique.

I was once really determined and passionately wanted to be a pro (like thousands of people in their teens) but I never ever had a chance of trial, because I didn’t have international exposure that could bring money to a club? No, because clearly wasn’t good enough.
Get real people. Do you have Stockholm syndrome or something?
You need to expect absolute professionalism from our club.

There are tiny national league clubs in England that we certainly could learn much from.

I don’t know about anyone else but I’d be a much prouder fan if our club worked astronomically hard in silence updating us fans here and there with squad updates and pre season games etc

It just comes back to the old argument that our smug owner is still trying to make profit from the smallest club in a league where no club makes profit.

Agree but it had the feel of all that’s for nothing if no one knows and it falls through so better cash in.

Also the club got fantastic benefits from the other day

But the big disclaimer was “IF HE SIGNS”

Whilst I understand that some folks see the whole Bolt situation as being nothing more than a sideshow distraction, I am of the understanding that MMM is solely focusing on preparing the current squad for the upcoming FFA cup game and subsequent season.

The decision not to play any open pre-season games prior to the Adelaide game is, as I understand it a deliberate one, as the coaching staff are focusing primarily on fitness and intra-club games, where tactics and formations can be worked on. I understand that the awaited pre-season games will come after the FFA cup game, so we just need to trust that MMM and his team know what they are doing.

My sources tell me that the whole Bolt deal is entirely its own animal and all other recruitment planning is proceeding as it otherwise would, with signings to be announced once deals are in place. As frustrating as that may be for all of us, club included, I would personally much rather we made the right signings than quick ones.

There is no point in tearing ourselves apart as fans right now, we just need to let the various processes run and see where they take us.
