Not too surprised by the Jets wins against Melbourne City and Sydney, they looked quite good in the FFA Cup against Adelaide and probably deserved to go through more. If the snake has a decent season and Nabbout turns into a good striker they could have a decent year.

Its pre season. I can't see their roster causing any trouble for anyone really when it comes around to season proper.

NEWCASTLE JETS KEEN ON ARGENTINEAN MIDFIELDER PATITO RODRIGUEZ:

Newcastle Jets are reportedly on the verge of signing Argentinean midfielder Patito Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is currently on the books at Greek Super League outfit AEK Athens.

The 27-year-old made the move to Greece from Santos in 2016 after four years with the Brazilian club.

In that time he spent two seasons out on loan - one in Argentina with Estudiantes, and one in Malaysia with Johor Darul Ta'zim.

Reports out of Greece suggest Newcastle are in advanced negotiations to secure the Argentinean's signature.

Rodriguez is reportedly very keen on the move, which would see him become the third Argentine in the A-League in 2017/18, along with Melbourne City's Fernando Brandan and Melbourne Victory's Matias Sanchez.

The Jets - under new coach Ernie Merick - currently have three visa spots left to fill on their roster.

TURMOIL AT NEWCASTLE JETS - MERRICK PULLS PIN ON PATITO RODRIGUEZ:

EXCLUSIVE: Goal's resident spy reveals the mayhem in the Hunter Valley after the coach withdrew an offer from an Argentinian star.

Argentina playmaker Patito Rodriguez is not joining the Newcastle Jets after coach Ernie Merrick personally withdrew the contract offer.

The Covert Agent can reveal Newcastle originally agreed a one-year, $750,000 marquee contract with the 27-year-old AEK Athens player, but the deal is now off after Merrick changed his mind.

It is believed Merrick blindsided the Jets hierarchy with his abandonment of the deal for Rodriguez - an attacking midfielder who played two seasons with PSG superstar Neymar at Santos.

The player's agent Martin Priest is said to be furious about Merrick's decision, believing his client had secured an in-principle agreement with the Jets after securing a release from his AEK Athens contract.

Rodriguez's representatives are believed to be considering his legal rights via FIFA's dispute resolution process.

Extremely disappointing if the Jets didn't honour any prior agreements, clubs and players need to be better than this.

Jets sign Venezuela international Vargas:

Newcastle Jets have signed Venezuela international Ronald Vargas on a one-year deal, subject to a medical.

Vargas, 30, who has spent the past two seasons with AEK Athens, has also played for the likes of Club Brugge and Anderlecht.

Jets coach Ernie Merrick expects big things from his new signing ahead of the 2017-2018 A-League season.

"To have a player of Ronald's quality and experience join the club is massive for us," said Merrick.

"He's an exciting, international player with experience in some of the finest leagues in the world and his inclusion goes a long way to completing our squad.

"Ronald will offer a great deal to our play in the front third and is the perfect fit for our team.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how he can combine with the likes of Dimi Petratos, Roy O'Donovan and Andrew Nabbout to create goal-scoring opportunities.

"We've said all along that we would wait for the right player and that has paid dividends for us, we've now got a player who I feel, can take the game by the scruff of the neck with his skill at the set piece and in general play."

Vargas will arrive in Australia on Sunday for his medical before putting pen to paper with the club.

Vargas, who boasts 122 appearances for Club Brugge and RSC Anderlecht, will join the Jets on a one-year deal – bolstering the attacking stocks of Ernie Merrick’s new look squad.

The attacking midfielder made 50 appearances for AEK Athens during his recent two-year stint with the club, complementing his 23 caps for the Venezuelan national team.

Jets CEO, Lawrie McKinna said this latest signing was further signal of positive change.

“We’ve taken great strides since Ernie’s appointment earlier this year, and I think fans are beginning to see the rewards of the hard work that’s been put in across the club,” said McKinna.

“To attract a player of Ronald’s calibre tops off the many positive things we’ve seen both on and off the pitch during pre-season.

“Joel Griffiths has been an integral part of making this deal possible, his professionalism, persistence and hard work has been they key in getting this deal over the line.

“Fans can look forward to seeing an attacker, a goal-scorer and an all round quality footballer once the (Hyundai) A-League kicks off in early October.

Vargas will arrive in Australia on Sunday 17 September – with a medical thereafter – before the official confirmation of his signing.

So this guy is the reason they pulled the offer for the other one. Interesting to see what happens there seeing as though the other one was released from his club to take the jets offer.

The Scum have ditched a scheduled match against a local side in favour of two 'intra-club' trials before their Rnd:1 opening clash against us.

Whereas we have scheduled games against Victory & Sydney FC.

Interesting decision from Merrick.

That late in the pre season, the time for intra-club trials has passed its usefulness imo.
Much rather be warming up against other A-League sides.
