We need a true striker, someone like Mrdja. I know most guys on here didn't like him, and I guess for good reason. But he could score goals. The last time he actually played for us he got around 8 goals in about 12 matches. We need someone like that. Maybe Major could become a striker of that calibre, after all he got a shit-load last year, admittedly against lesser opposition.

I said a few seasons ago we should be looking at Shane Cansdell-Sherriff.
It looks like he`s ready to come home after 15 seasons in the UK.
A seasoned defender, naturally left footed but able to play CB ,LB or higher up the field.
At 32 he would be a superb fit for us.
Also in our favour is the fact he has 4 young sons & his parents live at Campbelltown so with our beach culture & being back close to he`s family it would be a great move for him.

Playmaker Anthony Caceres focused on the Central Coast Mariners
By Nick Amies on March 20, 2015

He is quietly establishing himself as one of the A-League’s best prospects. However, when some would be looking to engineer a move abroad, Central Coast’s Anthony Caceres is concentrated on developing his game.

“To be honest, I haven’t really thought that far ahead (leaving the Mariners),” Caceres said when speaking exclusively to Outside90.

“But if I do get the opportunity to go to Europe I’d love to go.”

The 22-year-old initially made a name for himself as a holding-midfielder, but the departures of Marcos Flores and Kim Seung-yong have allowed Caceres to make the No.10 role his own at Central Coast Stadium.

“I personally enjoy playing higher up the field. I base my game around having the ball, and I think I’m most effective when I’m trying to create things in and around the box.”

“But I don’t mind my defensive duties, if I have to drop back for a game or two I believe I can do the job there as well.”

Caceres is a great admirer of Argentine great Juan Roman Riquelme, who is considered to be one of the best playmakers of his generation.

“I believe he dictated play brilliantly and the game was always at his pace. His technique and ability to pick a pass was always second to none. He was probably my main idol growing up.”

However, to further emulate his idol, he will need to find the back of the net more regularly. Riquelme scored 123 goals in 495 appearances at club level, but the Mariners number ten only netted for the first time this season against Adelaide last week.

“I definitely see it as an area where I can improve. Everyone wants to score as many goals as possible, and you know I don’t think there’s a better feeling than celebrating a goal with your teammates.”

Caceres’ goal against Adelaide was the result of a new high-pressing style implemented by interim head coach Tony Walmsley, and the Mariners will be looking to use it again this Sunday against Perth Glory.

“We’re looking to be more positive for the rest of the season and end on a good note.” He said.

“By doing that we want to take the game to teams, make them worry about us and go out and attack.”

Central Coast are currently stranded in eighth place on the ladder, and anything but a win would signal the end of their top six hopes.

“I think in the back of our minds we do hope to sneak in (to the finals), but realistically it’s going to be very tough,” Caceres said.

“So our focus at the moment is, like I said, ending on a good note, putting in some good performances and entertaining the fans.”

Look out for the rest of our exclusive interview with Anthony next week on Outside90.

Good to see our best getting some recognition by the press. Terrific player Cass and a better person. Hopefully he will be at the mariners for a while.

A mate of mine in the UK knows a few people at the Everton academy. He says "Galloway and Kenny would be excellent for you, Duffus also".

If we re sign Major I see him as a cheaper Matt Simon to be honest.

Caceres had our best moments, but the number of times he played a pass behind his target or quite frankly nowhere near his target was just extraordinary. Incredibly frustrating - he'd suddenly do these beautiful things and then f**k them up just as abruptly.

Sorry Magpie....I normally agree with you but I was disappointed with Cernak tonight. He did quite well at times but if that was a trial I wouldn't sign him.
Having said that I'd give him another season as a useful squad player.
I think he should have played as striker and Fitzy on the wing.....if so he probably would have got at least one and I would be singing his praises.

Followed closely by Cernak. Has he been signed up for next year? If not, will he be?
No info on that as far as I can see, his current contract is only to the end of the season. I agree that depending on what dross Everton see fit to pass on to us to gain some experience ;) Cernak should be given a new contract. It seems to me that now he's being given more game time he's showing a bit more go.

Any ideas how much $$ Matt Simon is on/asking?? would be easier to handle the clubs decision to let him go if we knew what he was asking for

On that note, it puzzles me that people seem to think that Everton will pass on to us (loan?) very good players just so as they can be of help ?? Why would *any* club send very good players away

OK, so who would we deem "good enough" or deserving enough to lend (??) to Everton, on that quid pro quo basis? Why would we send any of our good players to them when we need to retain all the good players we have? ( And strangely enough I have never watched Silence of The Lambs, that genre has never appealed to me. :-| )

Clubs will farm out younger players to develop - have them play against men rather than U21s and feel the pace and physicality. The players we get might be similar standard to Olly Bozanic (who was farmed out by Reading) - not world beaters but solid, well drilled professionals looking to make a mark.

This is what I see from the partnership. Give the boys game time & experience. However this pre-supposes that we'll have a coach approved by Everton, and maybe this was the final straw in Mossy's downfall.

So Liam Rose and Anthony Kalik, from the squad yesterday, would go to the UK "for experience and game time"? Together with Tom Slater and Dejan Pandurevic? The last two admittedly haven't had any 1st. team game time yet. I dunno, quid pro quo won't seem to work for us in sending away much of our good youth players. That's why they get a run in the senior team occasionally, to gain experience as they grow up. Why would another club from a (ahem) better and more competitive league use our youngsters just to give them experience and game time against senior players? Doesn't make sense to me.
EDIT: Oh yes, and Josh Bingham too?

Not necessarily - what they get is a place to farm players to (and someone else to pay their wages for that time), what we get is a source of new players and access to their coaching and development structures and analytical frameworks to build up some of the off-field firepower that clubs like Melbourne City have access to and which we don't.

i'd like to see this too. Cernak would also be playing out of position but seems a better choice as a fill-in no.9 than Fitzy who can be quite good on the wing himself
