Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

yes indeed . it holds even more solid in a 442 if both your front 2 are strikers and not midfielders.
we don't need pretty .we need , with limited resources , effective direct football .

That's not an argument for a 4-4-2, it's an *assumption* that 4-4-2 is better.

Is it just an axiomatic truth, like that Hutch ought to be dropped?

horses for courses, of course

I'd like to see Duke and Simon as two strikers just to see how it goes. with Monty forced out now would be the best opportunity.

I don't expect Mossy will because he's determined to enact his plan and I don't expect a full 90 from Matty anyway

This team played with one up front, and I think they went alright.

Yes but we had a lot more overall quality and a free scoring centre back. Playing 460 as they claimed on the drive bys website is killing us.

There's a big unstated assumption there that playing with one up front relies on having high quality players. We had some pretty high quality players in other years too.

There's a second one implied one there too - that playing with two up front doesn't require the same quality.

We won trophies both ways with similar squads - the 2011/12 league winning side was still playing the diamond 4-4-2. We've played with two up front and won bupkis too.

There's more to it than the formation alone, and so changing formation is not an automatic improvement.

When what you are doing is an epic fail.....any change has to be an improvement.

How many of those players are still here? And what sort of quality have we replaced them with? We can't continue trying to play the way that team did because the quality is not there any longer. So we need to try something different.
I don't think that the something different we should try is letting all other teams out number us in midfield

4-4-2 is scientifically the best formation. Haven't you watched Mike Bassett: England Manager?

I dunno, we'll see against the Jets. I am still of the opinion things could be worse.

Exactly.

We have four in the back, five in midfield and one up front.

If we move to have two up front, we have to take something from somewhere else.

Our defence in midfield is a strength *at the moment* and largely shields the back four, but may not be the case for long.

Is is axiomatic that we'll gain more goals out of adding a striker than we would lose from weakening the defence?

I don't think it is.

Wonders aloud given both coaches have been given the kiss of death in that the senior management have backed the coach... with MM now free is the losing coach a step closer to the door...

In recent seasons we have had mids who could also score.. to mention a few, Rogic, Macka, Olly, Berine weeMac add Pedj and Rose banging forward ... meaning or resulting in the defence of other sides unsure and watching off the ball movement. The result was less need for a striker to score and they received less attention simply because of the danger from the mids and outside backs..

Today we don't have anywhere near the same scoring skill level in the mids nor do we move off the ball as we have in the past, resulting in a greater need for a top striker especially if we only play one up front...

TBH I don't have the solution other than getting in some new players ... Our squad today is not as strong as two years ago and most other teams have stronger squads than two years ago... remember we recruited, Mane, Sim, Kim, Bosnar, Cernak, Vernes, Poscoliero, Trifiro, to replace, Sainsbury, weemac, Berine, Olly, Dutchie, Kawsie, Rogic, Macka..

Question is can our mids create the space for Duke and can they deliver the balls he needs into the box... time will tell but I am not hopeful..

Hope we thump the Jerks

wrong punter on the hutch gripe.
442 is prefect if your gunna boot it up and fight for it. which is what we'll be doing alot of.

Even against Newcastle, kick and hope will see us monstered. Jaliens and co will eat that up and we'll spend the day defending.

Jaliens is pretty good . Newcastle is a team we could pass around . but we won't be able to do that to anyone else .
we're to small , not fast enough on the break , no one in finkler , broich ,carrusca class .

no matter what technical excuse you come up with . why we can't and should stick to a formula that has produced one open field goal in 7 games .
we need something else . just quietly

This game is make or break for us. The Jets just got smacked by Brissy 4.0. They have looked poor all season and are coming 2nd last. However if they beat us they will leap frog us and we drop into the bottom 2.

This game will indicate if there is any progress being made.

rumour has it that matty simon had a fitness test at paul oval matcham yesterday afternoon
looked to be moving very freely at top speed in all directions
me thinks he will be back this week even if its on the bench
He may just be the catalyst the team needs. Here's hoping!

onya Hutch.

And in spite of this article http://www.theaustralian.com.au/spo...134888581?nk=87ae02ad2eec53b808b4939743cef47b where Hutch explains his "non" spat with Mossy, Stubbins just has to mention it as "Hutch's problem with Moss". Well how uninformed and wrong you are Stubbins. I'm sure Mossy, Hutch and the boys will ram that one right up your Khyber on Sunday, Stubbins.
