. agree that simon didn't do us any favours when 'trying' to run down the clock ... but what the f**k was reddy trying to do? lose us the game?

. huge result tonight ... thoroughly enjoyed myself. when the whole crowd took up the 'we are champions chant' ... wow, that was epic!

. but missed the band big-time, what's going on there?
they weren't @ the fc seoul game on wednesday:(

Much as I hate to admit it, Brisbane would have likely won that GF even if that penalty hadn't been called and it would have been deserved. Perth were never really in the game, I think.
Anyway, the sort of generalisation surrounding the referees is a gross oversimplification - as with most generalisations ;) - there are so many factors involved and technically the ref could be hugely incompetent and cost you the game by blowing the whistle whenever you get the ball ;)

Look at the first match against the Jest, last season, Rosey getting an offside call, in our own half, for example... Or in that same game, Zadkovitch literally almost ripping Rosey's shirt off, without it even being noticed etc. etc... Sometimes there's little or nothing that you can do, as a team.
Once that is said though, the refs can be bad, but I don't think that there's much value to be found in seriously accusing them of being cheats, the lot of them... Inept perhaps, but not outright cheats.

I dislike Gillett and have to admit that I thought that it was remarkable how much "luck" Brisbane had with his calls, in that finals series as a whole. But, outside of his ineptitude, my issue with him being the ref in the GF has more to do with his connections to the club opening him up for attack, than it has with me actually thinking that he was indeed a cheat.

Anyway, I'm overseas and will be scrambling to find a livestream somewhere as the foxtel over VPN thing doesn't seem to be great, but COYY! Time to remind Adelaide that they may have smashed us down there, but they lose when they travel to BT!

Rubbish.
Perth dominated that game.

Didn't go as had family event I couldn't escape.
Didn't see the game as had to drive someone back to Sydney so only got to hear it on the radio. First half listened to ABC 2nd half listened to Coast FM (amazingly I preferred Coast's coverage).

Please write a review and a 321 for me someone.

From what I heard Bernie was our most dangerous.
Eddie was playing the enforcer.
storm was dangerous
Monty put in a big shift.
Duke worked his arse off.

Coast rated Caceras MoM but didn't mention him much in their coverage

Are Coaches being put on for next week?

Sadly I have to go to a wedding next Saturday in Bowral... my wife is one of the bridesmaids so there's no way in hell that I'm going to be able to get out of that one :(

Let's smash the Drive-Bys 2-0 again... with any luck MV will do in the Meow and we'll get to host the GF at Allianz:overheadl:

Hmmmm...Perth v Brisbane GF proves your theory to be incorrect.

Also Football is not like AFL or basketball where you score almost every time you have possession.

You may only get 2 chances ( or in our case 1 as we are not very attack minded) in the whole 90 minutes.....if the ref is against you it's very easy for them to change a result.

Look at the penalties against Rosey and Hutcho in recent weeks for an example.
The sport I was coached in is very similar to football except you hit a white cricket ball with a narrow stick with a hook on the end, and the goalkeeper is the only one allowed to kick the ball. Perth v Brisbane GF doesn't disprove the theory, if Perth had been good enough they would have been enough in front for the "penalty" not to have hurt them. They weren't, therefore they weren't good enough.

. ok so it is that time of the year when i need to vent ... finals time ... which means finals ticketing hassles. i am surprised there hasn't been any whinging on here

. monday, like a good little girl ... i logged on to buy my tickets in the prescribed manner knowing i was going to be rorted by ticketek add-on costs but otherwise hoping things would go smoothly - yes, yes, i know ... more naive than dibo's view on refereeing :p

. during the process the system locked up and would not let me proceed ... of course i was unable to reload i was now locked out. only received engaged signals when trying to call - so off to ticketek it was ... with a 30+min delay going down kariong hill because of a truck breakdown. then stood in the rain to get my tickets (with others experiencing similar problems)

. but then they wouldn't issue the tickets (happily took my money though) they said they would be emailed within 48 hours ... apparently this was at the request of ffa - why i have no idea

. so three days later still no email ... so i headed back to ticketek. again there was a bunch of people there with the same issue but this time they had no problem printing the tickets for us ... and no, the apologies didn't make anybody feel better. it would be nice if they would at least refund the ~10% booking charges

. the ffa and ticketek always manage to outdo themselves in trying to piss me off each time :fireup::fireup:

Almost exact same issue. Just no time to have a well deserved whinge n here. Total debacle every year, and this year was very disappointed that the club didn't look after me when I turned to them. Said they would contact Ticketek for me, and never heard back from either one.

7 reddy apart from the djite brain snap very good
8 rosey tie Mom with stormy . big momemnts early up and back when the reds were putting it to us
7.5 steady , rock solid, when ever there was trouble brewing
6.5 chesty 150% better player when steady is on the park
8 stormy won a ko victory over neuman . will give gombau nightmares for the next 12 months
7 monty plenty of house keeping
7.5 caceras was 5 minutes a head of the game .cut them off when we got into trouble .was a menace once hutch came on
7.5 fitz ran the reds ragged . I can see him and Bernie in the 2015 oz squad for the Asian cup. I told the kid "you should ring angie and tell him to forget
torisi and pick him" the kid had a glint in his eye that , I might not be just a fat bastard and could be right.
6.5 triffo 65 minutes of quality in a semi . well done lad , well done
7.5 good king Bernie ,hero to his people . glided across the park and slayed the dragon. he is showing himself to be a 90 minute player.
i hope when he leaves it's to a dutch or german club . the most dangerous player in the A league
7 duke worried the high quality reds defence all night

5 gombou blew it by leaving djite on the bench
7.5 mosey with a shoe lace and a elastic band has produced the most feared team in the A league

The band are away at a big competition apparently.

Bernie my MOM. Terrific runs, great patience, vision and threat with the ball.
Duke a tireless and excellent game with a crucial final assist. 2pts.
Roux/Eddy 1 pt

First half was lack lustre with AU dominating possession - but Mariners mostly absorbing it well.
They are a good side under Gomabau - and I think a bit unlucky this season. If they had a class striker, there season could have been very different.
Second half we improved - and the we clearly went up another notch when Hutch came on. (Really Womby we did)
All in all, a well played game I thought, though we still make the kind of unforced errors that if we lost we would have no one but ourselves to blame.

Wanderers away especially after the ACL trip will be a challenge... but we are definitely more than capable.
Besides Duke, I think we need a better striker than Matty on our books though...

Exactly.

And what about the 2008 Grand Final between our Champions and the Scum? You can't tell me that the officials didn't have a major part to play in the result. You could even add our GF against the Pussies in Brisbane. A blatant push on Pedj in the dying stages went unpunished.

It does cut both ways admittedly, with Pedj also getting away with a handball against the Drive Bys in the GF last year.

Don't buy that for one minute. The ball was deflected in the box and Pedj, with little time to react was moving his hand away from the ball. There is no way it was intentional.

Our biggest worry remains the under performance of Duke and Simon as forwards. The stats show that we only had three shots on goal all night, and they were all from Bernie. I'm not saying that Duke had a bad game, as he ran his arse off. But he's there to get into scoring positions. Simon's short stint stats were three fouls.

Not....Sure....If....Serious....
But if you are, I think you need to go back and rewatch that game. Perth were shite and ridiculously lucky against us in the semi - they also had good support from Gillett there... They weren't much better in the actual final - never looked like winners, in spite of being ahead, more like a team hoping for that one shot to go in.

I think duke has been getting his mojo back . I think simon is going backwards .
I think a state leaguer and maybe a foreigner should be added .with kawz gone, sterjo, mcbreen, flores as well

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
AU are deadset lousy on the road...they were almost playing like they did against the scummers.. ALMOST...the amount of brain snaps going on was a bit weird, sudden death final stress I suppose, I'm yet to figure out why the kid took a swipe at Mile...and McCann was lucky I reckon, after telling the the ref to f**k off, I would of walked him....as for our boys..I liked Rosey, Fitzy, Bernie and Reddy( minus the f**kup)...coming a close second was everybody else, even The East Gosford Sportsman of the Millenium, who maintained his mindset and got a foul after 2 seconds on the pitch...maybe Matty needs contacts, he might stop running into people?
Pity the band was away...BUT...the joint held up its end....my theory about the boys lifting when they can hear a yellow wall of sound proved itself last night, when the crowd was quiet, so were the boys....oh, and the extra fireworks were the grouse

finally, my biggest footballing nightmare came to pass last night..Andy Harper was calling a game on SBS...ARGHHHH

Tough Defence Rocks Power Puff Adelaide
The graphic popped up at the top of the screen: possession statistics. Mariners 11% Adelaide 89%. Fox Sports guru Andy Harper summed it up in a flash “and none of that 89% has involved Liam Reddy”. It was a telling indictment of how Adelaide’s idealist possession based football was foundering on the rock of the stern pragmatism of the Mariners defence.
Phil Moss had selected the same eleven that had so professionally disposed of Brisbane at Suncorp although this time he had no defenders on the bench with Seip and Griffiths both injured. As the teams entered the field it was clear by the steely look in his eyes that Nick Montgomery was up for this game. A dignified minutes silence was observed for the tragic young Australian striker Dylan Tombides.
The Mariners started well; Roux was lively on the right and Duke almost played Ibini in on goal. Adelaide responded when the giant Malik muscled his way in for a header but it fell softly for Reddy. Just under ten minutes gone and Duke hassled the sluggish Boogard into an error and raced toward goal. He should have shot with his left foot but tried to cut back onto his favoured right and the chance was gone as the Adelaide defenders recovered. Five minutes later, Ibini, with his first meaningful touch on the ball, turned beautifully away from the defender and played Rose in on the left. Rose cut in but got his right foot shot hopelessly wrong and it went wide.
Adelaide were almost in with an excellent move down the right but no one could benefit from the cross; they then had a shot deflected shot which Reddy took it easily.
Adelaide were now dominating the game, they were asking all the questions. The Mariners could not get the ball; they could not get out of their own half. Ferreira’s clever cross almost found Neumann but the striker couldn’t get the touch required. It was Adelaide’s best move of the half.
As applause broke out in the 38th minutes for Tombides Duke shanked a chance after good work by Roux and Ibini. The Mariners finished the half strongly, showing clever neat skills, especially Fitzgerald who nutmegged a defender deep in the box (sounds very painful!) but could not find a target for his cross. The half ended with neither keeper being really troubled; you knew the second half would be very tight.
Duke started the half with a terrific run from deep before he found Ibini on the right. Bernie cut in but his left foot shot went straight at Galekovic. The game was developing as a contest between the Mariners terrific defence against the persist waves of Adelaide possession. The Mariners though, possessed the potent weapon of the pace of Fitzgerald, Ibini and Duke on the break.
Bernie had a great chance down the right but although he hit his right foot shot well Galekovic was able to save again. Bernie was just warming up.
Reddy was called on to stretch to deal with an Adelaide cross after Trifiro was caught in possession but then the Mariners immediately threatened as Duke and Ibini combined at speed down the left. Despite Adelaide’s sophisticated football the Mariners were showing genuine class of their own. Watson received a yellow when he cynically cut down Caceres to end a flowing move from the back.
And then Bernie lit it up. Calm play at the back, an excellent chipped pass from Anderson to the advancing Roux; his cross met at full stretch by Duke who laid the ball back for Bernie. One touch and bang! The ball was in the back of the net before Galekovic could move. “We are Champions! We. Are. Champions!” echoed round the ground. It was a quality goal by a team that constantly delivers.
Fitzgerald, in particular, and Duke and Ibini continued to cause problems for an increasingly frustrated Adelaide side. They began to accumulate yellow cards. Hutchinson had already replaced Trifiro and now Simon came on for the outstanding Mitchell Duke. Ironically, after his mid week display, Simon’s first touch was a touch up on a defender to concede a clumsy foul. His second touch was another foul.
As the game neared the end it was the Mariners who were winning every loose ball and then Reddy nearly gave away all the good work when his drop kick rebounded of Djite and almost let the Adelaide man in. Fortunately Reddy recovered and hacked the ball clear under pressure. He then showed just how good he can be with a dramatic dive to his left to turn away Adelaide’s only shot on target for the half. So much for 89% possession!
In time added on Sterjovski came on for the outstanding Nick Fitzgerald; the little firecracker received a well deserved ovation from the appreciative crowd. Normally these substitutions just eat up time but this one had added spice. As Mabil went to pick the ball up for a last Adelaide hurrah Sterjovski ever so gently bumped into him and knocked the ball away. Mabil went ballistic; sucked in by the old pro. A push and shove melee exploded into life much to the crowd’s amusement.
Angry Adelaide had one last go, a free kick after an Anderson timely foul, but Reddy easily collected and it was all over.
Adelaide, whose fans bizarrely draped a Chelsea banner over the fence, got what they deserved: nothing. They were posers today; power puff predators. It was the Mariners, with awesome relentless support from the crowd, who carried the real menace. The Mariners defence, with Bosnar in dominant mood was superb. Rose and Roux, in particular, were excellent today. I am inclined to give the MoM to a guy called Duke Ibini Fitzgerald such was the impact of the front three but if pushed I would give the nod to Fitzgerald.
