For anyone doubting the Western Sydney team move please understand the following .. eight former NSL clubs, numerous state leagues clubs, 5 Football association, close to 100, 000 registered players has produced more Socceroos, Coaches, NSL, & A-League players than any other region

Just for the record, Marconi, Sydney United, Olympic, Blacktown Demons, Melta Eagles, Penrith City, White Eagles, Parramatta Power, some for more years than others , plus very traditionally strong State Teams in, Bankstown, Campbelltown, Fairfield City, Liverpool City. All have there infrastructure in place aside from Parramatta Power (who where owned by a RL club). The associations also have in place a massive infrastructure. In addition the NSW Football Association is relocating from Blacktown to Riverstone (about 8 KLs) but to a more rural setting and are planning to build a 40 million dollar training academy

If and it is a huge if a massive if but if this team could ever unite these various tribes behind them.. then that club would IMO become Australias biggest club within a few years.. biggest from every point crowds, sponsors, etc

The task of uniting the old NSL clubs, the state league clubs, and the Associations , is massive ,, nay mega massive squared however if they could boy would it be a huge club

The football knowledge in the various ethnic villages that make up WS is huge along with as I said the former NSL & State clubs, combined with the five football association who have those 100, 000 registered players in winter competitions (that is not counting, indoor, fultsal, outdoor 6 a side, school players, summer competitions) .

As I said earlier the region has produced more Socceroos, coaches, and players in the old NSL & A-League than any other. Look at the first choice Socceroos Harry Kwell, Timmy Cahill, Bret Emerton, Mark Schwarzer, Jason Culina, thats off the top of my head but all WS boys almost 50% of the first choice team . and from WS.

Without doubt mega potential without doubt the reason for some of the games worst problems and greatest triumphs . So many old scores to settle and not just between the former NSL clubs .. also between the Associations & the old NSL clubs

Two examples... can Granville Association forget that until the mid 1960s it was a major force and how it lost its players to one of the old NSL clubs? Can White Eagles & Sydney United fans get behind one team, the same with Olympic & Marconi?

WS has three parts main parts, being, south, centre & north. In the Southern parts of WS it is almost Football totally aside from some parts around Campbelltown, with highly mature Football knowledge, the centre part say Parramatta to Penrith shared with RL but Football juniors dwarf RL junior numbers, the North Football dominated . BTW the part that AFL is after has never had a team in RL / RU / or Football . Middle class not much football knowledge but very keen players .. few descent coaches

Another important point is South Western Sydney is poor, with pockets of wealth, Central WS is lower middle class in the main, North WS upper middle class to quite wealthy

About 2.2 million people, much younger in general than people in other parts of Sydney & NSW.. has two major expansion sites in place in SWS & NWS for an extra 1 million people

Generally public transport is poor in all parts but especially in NSW CWS would have the best public transport

Man .... Old Soccer, New Football, 2.2 million people, five association, three different regions with internal diversity within regions as well Substantial wealth differences.. Substantial knowledge differences many Europe Snobs many Old Soccer types. many New Football types..

Now they have a team can this team unite these tribes if they do it will change the Australian Sporting landscape as this team would pull TV ratings, crowds and get media space that would radiate around Australia Obie Wan (Frank Lowy) knows this.. so to does the AFL

Interesting times ahead

This will never happen. The region is full of self serving know it all's who will see their own state league team as being the next A-League franchise. If you want to find old soccer australia mentality, then look no further than this region. Fans will be big in numbers but will at some stage take us back to the days of bad crowd behaviour without a doubt.

Massive potential but also massive risk. I would like to have seen this region avoided for at least another few years untill there were no other options.

West sydney team does not need to unite the tribes, and to be honest, I very much doubt that this will be the last team in sydney.

If we have promotion and relegation, I would expect probably 4 teams from sydney

W Syd should completely avoid any links with any of the "tribes" IMHO.

Start from scratch and tap into the vast population that had nothing to do with the NSL - the "diehards" can get involved on the HAL sides terms not the other way around.

A quasi NSL franchise will be a disaster. I cite Roar & Adelaide from financial viewpoints and the scum for Con.

midfielder... all the reasons you named on your "iF' are the same reasons it won't happen. Pigs will fly before the major sydney clubs and the associations they influence will unite for anything other than a blue. Centuries of baggage isn't going to alter because of an aleague club's geographical position. In fact, i'm betting on a resentment towards a new kid on the block.

West Sydney should create relationships with the old NSL clubs to entice their fans to join but at the same time keep them at arms length and get very close ties with the grassroots mums and dads, run football clinics, school visits etc to get these families involved in the club - more so than any other region in Australia the term "united" applies here - Gold Coast United is meaningless, uniting what? Adelaide not so, you had Adelaide City and Adelaide Sharks and a clear divide in the Adelaide footballing community, AU has done well to  unite the city behind the reds as shown by last weekends 15k+ attendance, WSU aka West Sydney United must do the same, otherwise it could be another Parramatta Power

Would prefer a bye to and more games than less games. But would have liked both coming in.

That said Better they have some time to sort themselves out like heart have got, and can build a base before they start.

Should put less pressure on playing rosters as well.

Hopefully Canberra and another can join the following year or one after and have 14 teams.

By that stage WIN may well be upgraded giving the gong a chance.

EXCLUSIVE: Football Federation Australia have let slip the name and identity of the new Western Sydney club to join the A-League in 2011.

Internet and trademark documents have revealed the new club will be known as Sydney Rovers FC, and will likely feature a red, black and white colour scheme.

The sport's ruling body in Australia registered the domain name www.sydneyroversfc.com.au and filed a trademark application for the club crest and badge.

The new club is set to join the A-League in 2011 after the FFA this week confirmed it was delaying expansion to a 12 team competition for a year.

However the new logo - approved and owned by the FFA - was updated on the Australian trademark register a week earlier, on September 22.

It is understood the bid consortium specifically wanted this particular design and name officially registered as soon as possible.

The winning bid - headed by former Young Socceroo Ian Rowden - was put together in just a month after Joe Meissner's bid collapsed at the final hurdle.

They won out despite strong bids from other West Sydney hopefuls as well as bids from Canberra, South Coast and Tasmania.

An FFA spokesperson this afternoon confirmed: "The FFA owns the registered name of every team name, and a variety of potential team names, in the Hyundai A-League.

Think Rovers is great name.
Rowdens class.
SFC beware - the true Sydney peoples club is coming and GCU has stolen the Bling title and I think its a better fit. SFC need two big seasons to ensure they maximise their supporter base and identity before the onslaught.
