ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

VAR

Much as I dislike talking about refereeing, I have to say this VAR is an absolute shocker! Do all the stadiums have the Maccas VAR ad with its flashing balls even as play continues? Ludicrous!
In a sense I like how shambolic and built-in-irrelevant it is, because that means we should dump it faster. Unless of course the main game is the extra revenue stream from the Scottish takeaway.
However, why can't the referee carry a device which allows him or her to, for example, look at a goal line camera? That kind of simple tech fix for a simple problem is surely easy and cheap?

Just when you thought bad decisions were bad they come up with something worse.
Not one sport has been improved by it

I like the idea of VAR, but I don't think the implementation here works.

Especially the fact that it's so goddamn inconsistent - clearly incorrect decisions aren't being looked at this season.

I don't like the 'VAR review' every time anything happens in the PA....I can see why it's a thing but I'm not a fan of it. Perhaps it should be left to the referee calling for intervention, or red card offences that don't include DOGSO. Or a 'coach's call', 1 per match, and they get another one if it's upheld.

And there have been a few poor implementations. The Roar disallowed goal, you can see the decision was wrong on the first check. View it another 2-3 times just to be sure, and the VAR should have advised the ref rather than telling him to go and check.

The more recent SFC one, again, a good cast study on when it probably wasn't implemented too well.

I think the coaches call has merit but like cricket it doesn’t stop the howler if you have used your challenge which is the whole purpose.

The other thing is you mentioned wrong decisions but it’s not for that. It’s obvious error but who decides what that is. Pretty sure every Mariner VAR is an obvious error to us. Seriously though it’s down to interpretations which is what the game already has with ref’s.

Goal line technology only for me and how many times has that actually been used

Northern Ireland lost there World Cup qualifier on a dud penalty given by the ref and Ireland were robbed by Henry handball for France a few years ago.
No VAR in either.
So would think VAR would fix that and everyone is happy but seeing what is happening in the A League it’s very infuriating.

What would people rather?

A dodgy penalty against the Socceroos could cost us a World Cup spot as no VAR. if we did should we accept it as part of the game that will be gone for ever soon

Should only be used by the ref. No VAR in their ear going oi have a look at that play.
I would also except 1 coach challenge per half. That should be the only external influence.
As with the cricket I believe it's implemented to stop the howler but everything it does is a howler.

Interesting how last weekend, we didn't see the stupid 'VAR check' every time something happened. It seems that FFA just might be constantly reviewing and changing the approach.
Of course the VAR probably has been checking, we just haven't been using 'there was a tackle in the penalty area' as an excuse to show the maccas logo on TV.
Even in our game, there were a couple of incidents in the box that I though may have at least warranted a 2nd look. Nothing that really stood out as controversial, just 'possibly wrong' penalty decisions. As in 'ref is probably right but I'll check it anyway'.
The lack of consistency is the biggest issue in this league - but that's no different to the MRP who have always been very selective on which teams and which players see incidents get reviewed. Still angry about Asdrubal getting decked not warranting a response from either.

It could be that we need to go back to the VAR only being used if the ref calls it or if something happens behind the ref's back - except with the ref calling it, my concern is that the ref wouldn't want to call the VAR after making a decision. Every ref has awarded a penalty being certain but had doubts develop afterwards, but I don't think the culture of the game permits the ref to second guess himself (unfortunately). Even if he's right he'll be punished for the uncertainty. Perhaps not, and that's more the fault of referees condoning abuse than anything else.

I only like it for off side as that should be definite with clear evidence and i’ve been an AR and it is not easier to judge a close offside when the ball was kicked 50 meters away from where you are standing. Most of the time they get it right but recall last year against the Smurf’s we would have had a draw if the VAR was available for the Carney off side. That was frustrating and could be a thing of the past.

Happy to leave Pens etc to the Refs call and only used should the Ref feel their view was impeded. When Refereeing you get a good feel for the flow of the game and most of the time it’s instinct on a tackle or hand ball. These calls are rarely clear cut so let’s just stick with the Refs call and get on with the game.
