Setanta to call in administrators

In the US there are Fox Soccer Channels in English and Spanish I think.

If they did it here, it might be put in as an add-on channel for a premium in the model of the old Fox Footy Channel (except with easily enough content to run 24/365).

That'd be fine if it were just the stuff on Setanta (which by and large I don't care about at all) but I'd bet it would start to roll EPL and UEFA CL stuff over. If I were them, I'd be investigating keeping AFC and HAL/FFA content on the regular channels and charge a premium for the rest. If it were $10 a month you'd probably have a fair few takers.

Why Setanta Sports is in trouble
By Bill Wilson
Business reporter, BBC News

broadcaster Setanta started life in an Irish dance hall in west London, showing the Republic of Irelands 1990 World Cup game against Holland after the BBC and ITV declined to broadcast the game in the UK.

It cost just 10 admission to watch that game in Ealings Top Hat club and Setantas two Irish founders, Michael ORourke and Leonard Ryan, managed to break even after 1,000 Irish fans turned up to watch the game.

Nineteen years later, Setanta was a company transformed. It had expanded gradually at first, and then grown in a spurt from 2004 onwards - which saw it acquire major sporting rights not only for football tournaments, but golf, horse racing, rugby union, cricket and boxing.

Along the way it changed itself from a niche broadcaster providing Irish and Gaelic sport to an expatriate audience, complete with homely Dublin guesthouse advertisements, to a rival for Sky whenever major sports rights came up for grabs.

Unfortunately for Setanta the financial sums involved had changed greatly too.

I'd be all over that, not keen on ESPN getting near it.

What we get on Setanta is not the same as over there. We don't get the EPL for example because Fox has the rights in Australia. We do get some extra stuff like Scotland internationals which are usually shown on Sky or the BBC.

When it's Setanta's own event you get to listen to all the pre game,half-time and post game crap. When it's another broadcaster you just get ads.

White knight claim for Setanta

By Ben Fenton and Salamander Davoudi

Published: June 12 2009 01:43 | Last updated: June 12 2009 01:43

Setanta, the embattled sports broadcaster, may have found a saviour at the 11th hour, people close to the company said on Thursday night.

However, they declined to name the company that has expressed interest in buying some or all of Setanta, nor would they say anything about its background, even whether it was a UK, US or other national organisation.

The terms of any proposed rescue were not disclosed and one person said: There is still plenty of time and opportunity for this to fall apart.

Another person close to the company said an emergency loan of 10m ($16.6m) had been agreed with a different partner to settle one-third of a payment due to the FA Premier League on Friday.

The company claimed to be rescuing Setanta was described as a very serious organisation which wanted to set it on a course to longer-term stability, one person close to the company said. Without identifying the white knight, the person said: This may be the shaft of light the company has been needing to keep it alive. It is a very serious approach by a very serious organisation which the board is taking very, very seriously indeed.

It was not clear why any potential investor would buy the company now rather than wait for it to go into administration, which seems likely to happen within a week if outstanding payments to sports bodies such as the FAPL are not met.

they are in real trouble
http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_5381938,00.html

The Premier League have told Setanta they will auction off the troubled broadcaster's 46 live matches for next season if they do not meet their next payment by a deadline of this Friday.

The league announced they have, with Setanta's agreement, issued an invitation to tender for those 46 games.

If Setanta have not met their contractual obligations by Friday - and it is understood they are due to make a payment of more than 30million - then the 2009/10 broadcast rights will be sold after a bid deadline on Monday.

The Premier League said in a statement: "The Premier League has been working over the past weeks, with Setanta, to ascertain whether they are in a position to continue as the broadcaster of 46 UK live matches for the 2009/10 season.

"Although the Premier League would like to provide Setanta with as much time as possible to re-arrange its finances, the start of the 2009/10 Season is only two months away, with the release of fixtures imminent.

"Accordingly, the Premier League has notified Setanta that if necessary the existing licence agreement between us will be terminated, coming into effect if Setanta does not meet certain contractual requirements of the Premier League on or before Friday 19 June 2009.

"In view of the shortage of time before the start of next season, the Premier League has determined, with the agreement of Setanta, that it shall today issue its Invitation to Tender (ITT) in respect of the 46 UK Live Matches for the 2009/10 Season only.

"The bid deadline has been set for Monday 22 June but we will give all prospective bidders notice late on Friday 19 June if Setanta have met their conditions, thereby negating the need for bids to be submitted."

Under an agreement with the European Commission, the Premier League cannot sell all their live matches to one single broadcaster.

That means that Sky would only be able to bid for 23 of Setanta's 46 Games next season as it already holds the rights to show the other 92 games next season.

American broadcaster ESPN would be expected to bid for at least one if not both of Setanta's two packages of games for next season.

Setanta also hold the rights for one package of 23 games for the 2010/13 seasons and if they default on their payments those also look likely to be up for grabs with ESPN again the favourite to win them.

Setanta's directors are trying to organise a rescue package and have had talks with Access Industries, owned by Russian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik.

It has been reported that Endemol, the TV production company that makes Big Brother, could also take a stake in Setanta.

How is it that we can still get Setanta here. Checked this morning. Wonder how long it will last on Foxtel. i gather it will only be replays or something. No live coverage?

If setanta folds in the UK and we still get the SPL shown on Setanta here one big positive will be that we won't have to put up with muppets Hartson and Butcher and their pre-game / half time bullshit.  ;D

Discussions over TV deal

Motherwell, 15:58, July 7, 2009

Officials from all 12 Scottish Premier League clubs are meeting at Hampden Park to discuss a proposed new television deal.
Reports suggest a joint bid from Sky Sports and American broadcaster ESPN is being considered as the SPL looks for a new deal to replace the one it had with Setanta before it went into administration.

It is thought to be worth considerably less than the 125m four-year contract that was in place with Setanta, although there are believed to be other options open to the League.

An official announcement on the deal is not expected until the end of the week at the earliest with all 12 clubs required to vote on a formal resolution, which must be supported by a majority of at least eight to four.
