Major disaster for football fans.

From a personal point of view losing the SPL is bad enough but it's virtually a full time football station with other stuff aswell.

German ,French,World cup qualifiers,Copa Libratores all spring to mind...... :(

You are right. If Setanta goes down the gurgler, I hope there is someone with deep  pockets to salvage the broadcasts. Perhaps in a revised format. Will keep an eye on this.

Apparently, the rights revert back to the rights holders (SPL etc etc) and are up for grabs again in the event that Setanta go under.

You would imagine that even if someone is prepared to take them on, they will be on less $$ and we have another ITV Digital drama unfolding.

Damn shame that FTA TV stations are not cashed up here in Australia, and/or already have their head so firmly up the butt cheeks of AFL or NRL, as they'd be ideal to grab some TV rights and put it under their new digital TV stations. Doubt that Foxtel have the programming space for extra Football but who knows if the price is right?

What's the story about ITV Digital, FFC? A league dropped a bundle and lost a lot of quality players as a result of less money from TV rights?

Setanta may lose football contract

Setanta Sports faces having its contract to show England and FA Cup matches put back on the market.

The English FA rejected Setanta's request for a 25 per cent cut on the 150m deal and the FA chairman is believed to be ready to listen to rival offers for the contract should Setanta's parent company, based in Luxembourg, go into administration.

From Wiki

These changes failed to revive the broadcaster. Indeed, the cost of the Football League deal proved one too many a burden for ITV Digital, and it was placed into administration on 27 March 2002, after the League refused to accept a 130m pay cut in its 315m deal with the ITV Sport Channel. Most subscription channels ceased broadcasting on ITV Digital on 1 May 2002. The collapse caused severe financial difficulties for lower-division football clubs who had budgeted for large incomes from the television contract. The Football League sued ITV Digital's parent companies, Carlton and Granada, claiming that the firms had breached their contract in failing to deliver the guaranteed income. The League lost the case, with the judge ruling that it had "failed to extract sufficient written guarantees". The League then filed a negligence claim against its lawyers for failing to press for a written guarantee at the time of the deal with ITV Digital. This time it was awarded a paltry 4 in damages of the 150m it was seeking.[8]

Don't care, cant get the f**ker on optus tv.

I would care if I was you mate, this could be a repeat of the ITV situation from a few years back that nearly sent many a club bankrupt.

Without knowing the consequences, please fill me in on how bad it would be and how many clubs we are talking about?

Have had a quick read, don't think it will be that bad as from early reports, ESPN are itching to get a foothold into UK football and can not wait to have setanta's current rights up for grabs again.

"Sky paid 1,314 million and Setanta paid 392 million for these broadcast rights. This deal represents approximately 28 million to each Premier League football club per year."

Now this money is paid out in installments - the deal still has another season to run..... you try telling less financially well off clubs in GFC times like these (Bolton, Wigan, etc.) that this season they won't be getting 30% of their TV money.  You may say "8.4 million quid, that's chump change in today's football", but think outside the top four (and even inside the top 4 - I bet Liverpool wouldn't mind a top up of 8.4 million about now with their debt situation and all, and the Arse certainly wouldn't say no, considering how spend shy Wenger has been known to be in the past).  Clubs set out their entire annual budgets based on TV money, it's their top revenue spinner.....

And consider the SPL as well, outside the Old Firm it's not exactly swimming in cash.

its not exactly the death of clubs either. Not ideal but clubs will survive. still struggling to give a toss. looking forward to see who picks up the returned rights if setanta do dissapear.

The rumour in Scotland is 3 SPL clubs will be on the brink without the TV money.Motherwell,Kilmarnock and I think it was Falkirk.

More importantly what will happen to Special 1 tv if Setanta sports goes under?

It does beg the question if the Aussie Setanta is run as a seperate company to the one in the uk?

Thanks, Arabmariner. Here's another one... not good. They've stopped subscriptions.

Setanta appears doomed as subscription services withdrawn
Setanta appeared to be entering its death throes this afternoon after the company disabled its subscription services, preventing new customers from signing up to the troubled broadcaster.

More of the story here
